On an individual level, anyone can be racist towards anyone else. The only thing is that there is discrimination occurring based on what race (perceived or actual) someone is.

If you have problems with black people or any other racial group consider to be people of color being racist to white people, I suggest that you do not end up working at the company that I am an employee of. The term “reverse discrimination” is mentioned in one of my annual required training courses, and I have a feeling your response to that term would be exactly what I think it would be.

Prejudice by definition is “unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostilenature, regarding an ethnic, racial, social, or religious group.” whereas racism is by definition “antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior.” hence white supremacy/privallege.

Ad hominems from requiemforadeathmask, and a fallacy of equivocation over this whole argument.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, racism is defined as “1. poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race and 2. the belief that some races of people are better than others.” Notice that this definition does not mention power systems or institutionalized racism.

Prejudice, as defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “1. an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion, etc. and 2. a feeling of like or dislike for someone or something especially when it is not reasonable or logical.” Again, this definition does not mention power systems or institutionalized racism.

@girlwhocried5sauce, I think you are confusing racism with institutionalized racism. Institutionalized racism, also known as structural racism, is defined as “A system in which public policies, institutional practices, cultural representations, and other norms work in various, often reinforcing ways to perpetuate racial group inequity.” by the Aspen Institute (link here, this source includes clear and concise definitions of many terms that are often confused, I encourage everyone to read it).

I think based on these premises, the conclusion can be reached that individuals of any race can indeed perform racist acts against other individuals of any race. However, in the U.S., the power structure in place most definitely works against Black people, as well as many other racial minorities in the U.S. The same can be said of the power systems in place in countries all over the world, where the race in power often discriminates against racial minorities within that nation.

So, more males circled “yes” as opposed to females - whereas no definition is given to the students of what “bullying” or “cyberbullying” consists of. They were handed the questionaire in the appendix.

Females More Likely to be Victims

Male bully victim: 53,7 %

Female bully victim: 44,4%

Male cyberbully victim: 25%

Female cyberbully victim: 25,6%

There’s a 0,6% difference in cyberbullying in a sample size of 234 (130 males, 134 females) -  Headline: “females more likely to be victims”.

Thigh slapper.

Again, with no mention in the “method” section that the students were given a definition of what cyberbullying or bullying consists of. It is up to the subjective idea of each person taking the survey where they put down their mark.

Then again, you’re one of the jokers who tried to sell the “UN cyberviolence” story. What else to expect.

"Our blog, however, also works with rhetorical fallacies, which can occur in statements, due to the reasoning or logic behind the statements being faulty." how do you know the reasoning behind a statement if it isnt provided? if you're arguing against what youre assuming the reasoning for a statement is without actually knowing it, thats a classic strawman.

After reexamining the post in question and reading through your asks again, I must concede that your point is a valid one. While one can assume certain statements are made with a fallacious thought process behind them, it is impossible to determine whether it is or is not logically incorrect. We can assume the reasons behind their thinking, but we cannot be sure. Basically, unless we know the reasoning behind statements, we cannot be certain whether or not they are fallacious.

I will admit that post personally just annoyed me and i felt that in order to try and set things right, I would point out a fallacy within it. As you say, though, it is merely a statement, and in itself it cannot be fallacious or not.

Thank you for pointing this out to us, and for remaining civil and calm throughout the debate. In the future, I will be more careful when reblogging statements.

ok let me try to explain this to you again. first, treating a statement as an argument is logically nonsensical. an argument is, by definition, a series of statements meant to support a conclusion. a single statement can be the conclusion of an argument, but it cannot constitute an argument in itself. because of this, a statement cannot possibly be fallacious. fallacies occur when an argument is INVALID, and a single statement cannot be invalid, only true or false.

Yes, logical fallacies occur in arguments and occur when the logic used is faulty. Our blog, however, also works with rhetorical fallacies, which can occur in statements, due to the reasoning or logic behind the statements being faulty. I understand this does not fit into the standard definition of fallacies, but pointing out the fact that some statements do not logically seem to make sense is something we have always done on this blog. People submit the posts they want to see analyzed, and we analyze them.

I understand where you are coming from, I truly do, and I will edit our description to make it clear that we will analyze not only complete arguments but also individual statements, even though analyzing statements doesn’t fit into the technical definition of logical fallacy.

I remember posting somewhere once in a thread about why girls aren’t exploited in animation anymore where some guy said, “all the disney girls are drawn to be generally attractive, but I don’t think there are any eye-candy men… or are there? Are there any Disney men that lots of girls like?” and I mentioned Roger. Tons of girls replied agreeing with me and the original guy was like “wait, Roger? from 101 Dalmatians? What’s attractive about him, he’s tall and lanky and has a big nose, he isn’t muscley at all! Wouldn’t you all prefer Gaston or something? Or do you girls think his big nose is indicative of something else?” and I was like “no, you idiot, he’s a silly, goofy guy who likes animals and can play a bunch of instruments, that’s why he’s attractive. What’s the matter with you? Gaston, seriously?”

This is why we need more girls in animation. And more guys like Roger apparently.

This is why I laugh my ass of whenever dudes talk about how men are “objectified” by the media too. Because 9 times out of 10, what men think is “women objectifying men” are characters like Gaston.

And Gaston is NOT a woman-driven fantasy. Gaston is a male wish fulfillment fantasy. Gaston is not what women want, he is what men want to be. He is hyper-masculinity to an extreme degree, dripping with sexism and testosterone. The fact that men think that Gaston is what women want says an awful lot about those men. 

While I don’t want to generalize, female fans tend to prefer a very different kind of male hero. We like the Rogers, the Milos, the Hercules. Genuinely kind, often awkward men who are sometimes vulnerable and respectful to women. 

Yes, this is a generalization. I own up to that. But I think it’s important to remember that there is often VERY big difference between what MEN want to be and what women (not all of whom are even attracted to men) WANT to see in our media.

Kudos to you for owning up to the fact that you committed the fallacy of hasty generalization. The original post also makes that fallacy, using the example of one man on a thread thinking that woman were attracted to Gaston to mean that men want to be like Gaston.

it's impossible for a statement to be fallacious which you'd know if you actually cared about logic instead of sea-lioning. treating a single statement as an argument makes absolutely no sense under formal logic.

We treat all statements and posts as if they are an argument, that’s just the way our blog works. Sorry if our lack of formal logic offends you, but we don’t make any claims that we’re operating under strict logical guidelines. We are a tumblr blog. As for the claim that we’re “sea-lioning”, I’m afraid that we don’t try to incite arguments, and if people reply to us attempting to start an argument we usually ignore them.
