Picture this: a retelling of the Odyssey set in medieval Japan, with the various islands from Toho's monster flicks taking the place of the ones from the poem. Scylla and Charybdis? No, you're stuck between Kameba and Ganimes. The Matango are the Lotus Eaters, Mothra and Infant Island play the role of the helpful wind god Aeolus, and the wrath of the Olympians takes the form of Godzilla himself, pursuing the crew relentlessly after they steal an egg from Solgell Island.
"We must move quickly, we don't have much time. Kong didn't notice I put Soma in his wine."
Kumonga and the kamacarases play the part of the Laestrygonians. We change things a bit by having the crew piss off Poseidon/Godzilla in their island instead of the Cyclops/Kong's, but hey it's an adaptation, not 1 to 1.
Birth Island and a very Belvera-esque witch/priestess of Battra subs in for Circe, while the queen of Mu/Mirai Kanai fills in for Calypso. Odysseus rides on Manda's back to get home.
The island of the sun god is Lagos Island. The crew eat the big egg they stole from Solgell Island after tying up Odysseus, and Godzilla eats them in turn but spares the bound captain (a hunt that he's not JUST a monster).
Ithaca turns out to be Odo Island. In place of the suitors, it is taken over by a cult of Baradagi Varan. Odysseus fends off the cultists and a last ditch arrival of Godzilla saves him from Varan - gotta end on a Kaiju fight after all. Godzilla saving Odo Island = the Olympians helping Odysseus kill the suitors, showing the cycle of revenge is broken. Odo Island pays a sacrifice of fish to Godzilla every year after to maintain the friendship.
Not sure who would fit the siren role, though.
Maybe the Sirens are Yog? Mind controlling voices and all, plus the siren episode is very close to the Scylla and Charybdis one already. So the Yog trio and Yog itself are the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis.
Maybe the crew doesn't eat the Godzilla egg. It feels a bit cruel even if it's true to the Odyssey. Maybe it hatches and, seeing that it's a baby of the monster that's been chasing them, the crew tries to kill it, with only Odysseus standing up for the hatchling - hence Godzilla sparing him.
Instead of going to the underworld, Odysseus communes with the spirits of dead Venusians (with Belvera's help) and gets telepathic/empathic powers. Is he the ancestor of Miki Saegusa and Princess Salno? Perhaps!
Possible substitutions/additions:
- Maybe we don't get to use Kong because of copyright shenanigans. Well, no one has to name the big ape in story, so we could just claim he's a different big ape on Faro Island.
- Alternatively,we could use Gaira instead. It violates the premise of ONLY using island monsters that existed before the modern era, but he IS a people eating hominid.
- While I don't want to bring in space monsters to preserve the mythic vibe if this idea, we could substitute Ghidorah for Varan. We'd just need to play up Ghidorah as an apocalyptic dragon who comes from the stars (very mythic concept) instead of a Space Monster. Make the cult that summons him call back to the ones in planet eater.
I want to work in Ebirah somewhere... Maybe instead of doubling back through Scylla and Charybdis like the poem, Odysseus encounters Ebirah while escaping the isle of the sun god/Lagos Island? Gets rescued by the people of Mu after his raft is destroyed...
Anguirus and Rodan cameo in the sun god/Lagos Island episode. I'd like to work in Gorosaurus too - maybe he eats the blinded Kong in the Cyclops chapter? Or is that too mean?
I'm gonna stick up for Varan for this - mainly because the poor guy needs more exposure. That said, if you're set on Ghidorah, perhaps Varan could take the place of the Cyclops? Given that he's based upon ushi-oni statues, there is a connection with him being a mythic man-eating monster.
Alternatively, Baragon might be a good Cyclops stand-in - she's got a record of people-eating as well, plus her burrowing would tie into the cyclops' cave (although I admit that she could also take up Varan's role as Odo Island cult leader). I could see Gaira taking up the role of Kong, though - have Sanda take the role of the other cyclopes that Polyphemus calls for the aid of.
Perhaps the island from Latitude Zero could take the place of Circe's island? It does straight-up have humans getting turned into kaiju, after all - have the crew get turned into giant rats and bats and Kroigas. Just put Belvera there as its ruler, and you should be golden.
Regarding the egg... perhaps it's Junior who advocates that Odysseus has served his penance. A son helping a father get home to his own family - there's a solid theme there.
For Rodan's cameo, perhaps he's got his Monsterverse/Fire Rodan fire to represent Helios' light and flame, as well as to tie into his Heisei link to Junior.
Another possibility could be to blend in bits from other monsters - if Gorosaurus is to fight our Cyclops, for instance, buying time for Odysseus and his crew to escape, perhaps he could get some features from Taro, another giant reptile with beef against cyclopes.
It's clear that you've put a lot of thought into all the different roles for the kaiju, but I think Kumonga should be moved.
I know that our beloved giant spider is traditionally associated with Kamacuras, but I think they'd work better as the Polyphemus of this reimagining.
Kumonga debuted with an appetite for humans, so that's one. ✅
As a spider they have many eyes, so losing one will hurt a lot but not be a crippling injury. ✅
Finally, if I'm recalling my myths correctly, Odysseus blinded the cyclops with a burning branch or torch. Kumonga's webs can be cut by fire in their debut film, so you've got a good in-universe reason for our hero to use that same weapon. ✅
See, I think the cyclops equivalent HAS to be a hominid. The horror of Polyphemus is that he is so close to human in appearance and behavior, yet just monstrous enough on both counts to be incapable of acting decent. He violates the sacred law of hospitality, he lies, he eats other humans despite being able to communicate with them and chat. A monster as alien and inhuman in appearance and nature as a giant spider isn't a good substitute for that - you need one of the "human-ish but not quite" kaiju for it, like Kong (who also has a propensity for drinking drugged wine like Polyphemus) or Gaira.
By contrast, the Laestrygonians, while also giant ogres, don't get nearly as much personality in their episode as Polyphemus does. Our heroes meet them, are immediately set upon, and have to rush to escape - that's a role that's much easier to slot in an inhuman monster into.
Kumonga can horrify us the way the Laestrygonians can, but he can't pull off all the many ways Polyphemus horrifies the audience. The Polyphemus equivalent NEEDS to be close to human. That's why I really think it HAS to be Kong - we know Kongs can be kind to humans, so seeing one choose to be a dick and prey upon them will get that feeling of betrayal.
And also Toho Kong is an alcoholic, just like Polyphemus.
