love it when my brain just goes "hey what if these characters never met" and the answer i immediately come up with is "oh he would revictimize and further traumatize his brother because he would focus all his minor obsessive behaviors on him to the point it metastasized into some godawful limerance that he'd immediately act on the next time they were alone together." none of my characters can catch a break and now i want to write this situation as a non-canon thing just because.

i feel like some writers need to remove positive/negative connotations from their head before writing because i only ever hear certain words or phrases in positive and negative lights (i.e. castle vs fortress debate, i've talked about this before i think). just as an example: warm. when you hear something described as "warm" most people think of soft things, coziness, petting an animal or the smell of fresh laundry, et cetera, et cetera. do i think of that? yes. but the connotations for that can be twisted.

i can take the word warm and turn it nightmarish or ugly fast. i describe the scent of bile as "warm," use the phrase "warm and dead," ad nauseam with the word until it means nothing. it's not a positive or negative word for me. it's neutral. it can be used to describe the fur of a friendly, giant, fantastical beast, or the water of a swamp filled with decaying bodies. in the same work.

which is why i use it to describe a character that is both paternal and dangerous.

don't let connotation be the downfall of your writing. use words to your advantage.
