If you haven't heard, Discord recently announced that starting next month, they will require face scan and/or a scan of your ID to access "adult" settings. You will be demoted to teen-access-only if you do not give them this info.

This is absolutely unacceptable, and not necessary at all for their app.

As much as I love my Nitro and Boosting Servers, I have cancelled everything, and I recommend everyone else does too. Also post wherever you can and tell them directly that this is why. (They don't ask you why you're canceling, just beg you to stay, show you all the cool stuff you're gonna lose, and ask if you're sure. Then offer you a discount if you resub right away.)

This hurts everyone in the long run, and absolutely hurts the Queer Community; piling on to many other hurts we've been dealing with. Discord also just dealt with a data breach last year, and now they want us to give them government IDs and a facial scan? I refuse. I'm keeping myself as safe as I can.

i really definitely should have made like a whole separate post instead of subjecting op to this but yeah anyway. i understand the desire for and by extension a need for fables, i.e. stories that tell you How To Act and What Is Good, but like, i exist beyond the bedtime stories my mom told me. i get my sense of right and wrong from real life, nowadays. and i don't need fiction to reflect my own code of conduct - i don't want to just blanket insult people who do want that, but i think in many cases that perspective comes from a lack of imagination. people who aren't comfortable playing pretend and getting into this world where things really are That Different, and who need the bad guy to be humiliated and the good guys to save the day in order for a story to be fulfilling. like, i feel fiction can be much much more interesting than that
