“Henry Tudor was described succinctly by Philippe de Commines as being ‘without power, without money, without right to the Crown of England’. Nevertheless, on Saturday 7 August 1485, this unlikely claimant to England’s crown landed at Mill Bay near Milford Haven, waded through the salt water onto wet Welsh sand, knelt and kissed the ground, and uttered the words of Psalm 43: ‘Judge me, O Lord, and plead my cause.’ His time had finally come.”
— “The Hollow Crown” by Dan Jone
“i thought this time was different, why did I think he’d be different, but it’s never, ever, different!”
On this day Elizabeth Tudor was crowned Elizabeth I of England, France and Ireland.
Born a Princess and losing that title a mere three years later upon the execution of her mother, Queen Anne, Elizabeth’s early life passed more or less quietly in the English countryside with occasional visits to court. At the age of fourteen, barely leaving childhood behind, she endured grooming and predatory behaviour by her stepfather Thomas Seymour and the ensuing scandal placed her own safety in danger. Seymour would lose his head but Elizabeth’s quick thinking and ability to keep calm under pressure saw her through the worst of the storm. From then on the trials only grew. Under her sister Mary’s reign, Elizabeth would resist attempts to be married to a foreign suitor, already professing from a young age to prefer the single life. In her early 20s she would be imprisoned in the Tower after coming under suspicion of collaborating with Thomas Wyatt’s plot to depose Mary from her throne. She would be imprisoned in the same apartments that her mother Anne Boleyn had been held in before her own execution. What this might have done to her emotional state we can only wonder at. No irrefutable proof could be found of her involvement in Wyatt’s plot. For a year afterwards, she was kept under house arrest at Woodstock under the watch of Sir Henry Bedingfield. To his dismay and annoyance, the crowds cheered her on her journey there.
Unpopular in Mary’s court but loved by the people, Elizabeth outwardly conformed to the Catholic religion while retaining her Protestant convictions, attempting to alienate neither her Catholic allies nor her Protestant friends. Elizabeth bid her time as peacefully as she could in the countryside while quietly preparing for the day she might one day become Queen as time proved that Queen Mary would not produce an heir. The popular image of a young woman taken aback by the news that her sister was dead and she was now the new queen is romantic but misleading - Elizabeth was already becoming a shrewd politician and took steps to make sure her accession would go smoothly well before Mary actually passed away..
That day came on November 17th, when Queen Mary finally succumbed to illness and Elizabeth ascended to the throne. On January 14th, her coronation was held at Westminster Abbey where she was proclaimed:
Queen Elizabeth I, by the Grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith.
“No-one would dare write a story like hers, nor ever could and still hope to make it half as interesting, or half as believable, as what really transpired. Born into a life of aristocratic privilege to a father whose love was never anything less than conditional and very often cruel, educated at the courts of the two most powerful and magnificent empires in Christendom, nurtured in the decadent world of the European aristocracies, she had been a dazzling debutante, an accomplished courtier, a talented musician and the muse of poets, songwriters and playwrights. Glamour, sophistication, charm and charisma had been hers in abundance. Then, whilst at the height of her youth and beauty, she had captured the attention of the most powerful Sovereign ever to reign in the British Isles. For her, consumed by obsession and a desire to possess, he had turned the world upside down and the continent had echoed to the sound of the roar she had created in her homeland. At long last, she had been crowned queen in unprecedented splendour, in a dress shimmering with a county’s worth of jewels and pearls. Archbishops had knelt before her, foreign rulers had showered her with gifts, evangelicals had celebrated her as God’s Chosen Nymph and for a moment, all too brief, the world had been hers. Then, with a gradient of catastrophe so unparalleled it still has the power to boggle the imagination, she was dragged from her throne and a one thousand-roomed palace, to be left here, kneeling, alone, in the sawdust, waiting for the sword to strike at a neck that had once inspired poetry and glittered with diamonds.” –Gareth Russel

Cinderella was too weak to fight for herself...AND THAT’S OKAY!
I cannot believe we’re still tearing Cinderella down! 2018 only has a few months left and we’re still doing this, we’re still painting her as the weakest Disney princess and we’re still painting her weakness as a bad thing?
Why?
Why are people so caught up on bashing this princess?
“The movie is so simplistic—”
In what way is it possibly simplistic?!
“She didn’t work hard—”
YES, SHE DID!
“Well, okay, but the fairy godmother still had to come in—”
Yep, I remember the movie too, and the countless stories on which it’s based.
“So the fairy godmother was the one who caused the happily ever after.”
She sure was, now, what’s your point?
No, really, what’s your point? Is the point that Cinderella is somehow weak because she wasn’t 100% in control of her own life? Seems like a pretty disgusting opinion to have when the whole movie is about an abuse victim finding a way out of her horrible situation. So Cinderella wasn’t the one who got herself out. So what? Instead of looking the movie at its bare surface, maybe try analyzing it with a bit more thought and tact. You might see something a little different. A magical transformation, if you will.
Because Cinderella did work hard.
And guess what we learned from that?
You can work
and work
and work
And there will still be people out there who will try to tear you apart:
Literally.
And that sucks. It’s a horrible lesson to learn but it is something we will all face in our lifetimes. There will always be people who will try to tear us down, there will always be people who will try to rip us apart, until we’re in a low place:
Until it seems like there’s no hope…
Until it seems like you’re too weak to get out on your own…
And maybe you are.
Maybe you are too weak to get out on your own. Maybe you’re not the strongest woman in the world. Maybe you’re not capable of screaming at the top of your lungs or brandishing a weapon or throwing a punch. Maybe you’re not able to get out of something on your own. Maybe you hit a low point and maybe you have no way out of it. Not alone. But that’s just it.
You’re not alone.
Even at your lowest point, someone will come help you.
You don’t have to do it all alone.
It’s okay to have a little help when you have nowhere else to turn.
Cinderella is the story about an abuse victim who is unable to get out of her toxic situation by herself and just when she begins to lose all hope, is able to get help from an unlikely source. It’s the story about a girl who needs help getting to her happily ever after and that’s okay.
Give us advocates:
They deserve their happily ever afters!
Give us warriors:
They deserve their happily ever afters!
Give us fighters:
They deserve their happily ever afters!
Give us girls who are not advocates, girls who are not warriors, girls who are not fighters, girls who still deserves their happily ever afters:
This reminds me of that quote that Mr. Rogers said his mother told him: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
Parallels between Henry VII and Elizabeth I
“there’s toooo much anne boleyn content, enough is ENOUGH;”
[ i mean it’s not like we’ve ever had like…a tv series that was focused on her from beginning to end but…ok. ]
#the way y'all carry on you’d think there had been like twenty already #there have been none #from childhood - adulthood #granted there are a lot of ab books but like…quantity /= quality #or w/e… complain if you want but don’t TAG it….no one caares #tudors is from henry’s perspective; wolf hall is from cromwell’s #tobg is from mary boleyn’s #none of the big budget stuff has ever been from HER perspective
Where tf my soulmate at, i need you bitch
