In 1960, SAG and WGA struck to force management to adapt to the new technology of television. Without that strike and the agreement it birthed, residual use payments would not exist.
My parents stole nearly all of my salary from my entire childhood. My Star Trek residuals were all I had, and they kept me afloat for two decades while I rebuilt my life. I have healthcare and a pension because of my union. The AMPTP billionaires want to take all that security away so they can give CEOs even more grotesque wealth at the expense of the people who make our industry run.
To give some sense of what is at stake: There are actors who star in massively successful, profitable, critically acclaimed shows that are all on streaming services. You see them all the time. They are famous, A-list celebrities. Nearly all of those actors don't earn enough to qualify for health insurance, because the studios forced them to accept a buyout for all their residuals (decade of reuse, at the least) that is less than I earned for one week on TNG. And I was the lowest paid cast member in 1988. They want to do this while studio profits and CEO compensation are at historic highs.
I mean, if not now, when? And I haven't even touched on AI and working conditions.
We must fight for the future of our industry in the face of changing technology, the same way our elders did in 1960. So today, my Spacemom and I went to the place where it started for us, way back when, to do just that.

my relationship with The X-Files revival is like. Iâm glad it happened. it was an insult to all of us. I would rather have a bad revival than no revival. I would change almost all of it. Iâm keeping Jackson as written by James Wong only, Iâm keeping Forehead Sweat, Iâm keeping the image of middle-aged Mulder and Scully in the unremarkable house, Iâm keeping the way Glen Morgan wrote them in This. Iâm burning the Struggles. I wonât forgive Rm9 for being the biggest missed opportunity in the history of time, except the last 10 seconds, which were perfect. Iâm not the same person I was when the revival aired. I will always be exactly the same person I was when Adeleâs 25 became the breakup-wifegate album. I feel like we were all being digested by the Field Trip fungus from 2015-2018. I think season 11 was fun. Iâve stopped feeling like the revival is the same show as The X-Files. thereâs a sterility to it (directing, cinematography, wardrobe, wig) that doesnât feel as permeable and malleable and moody and make-what-you-will-of-this as the original series does. I donât know why they couldnât get the visual feel of it right. remember when Mulder slit that manâs throat

Normally, I just reblog this kind of thing with a note like, ânot only do I read/write fanfic, I have an over-20 child who does the same.â But.
Who da hell do you think manages the Archive of Our Own? Who created it; who does the coding; who WENT TO CONGRESS three times to argue for our constitutionally-protected right to show Kirk boinking Spock?
Hint: it wasnât people under 20.
Who do you think makes the content on AO3? Sure, lots of teens⌠but lots and lots and LOTS of not-teens. The OTWâ˛s been around for almost 10 years - the people who put up the first content sure as hell werenât 10 and under at the time. (Or is there the assumption that the teenagers of 10 years ago wandered away and are no longer participating in fic fandom?)
The more I think about it, the less I understand this kind of question. Do teenagers actually believe the people who manage fic archives like AO3 and fanfiction.net are not involved in fic fandom? That they do coding and deal with complaints and register the domain and all that, but donât read any of the fic?

Star Trek has been a show I have watched since I was a wee one. I started with TNG as a child, but when I finally watched TOS in college, its impact was undeniable, both today and especially during the time it aired.
Although the famous speech says âfinal frontierâ, Nichelle Nichols was a woman leading the way onto new frontiers, a beacon of hope, resilience and possibility. So that is what I wish to carry with me into the new year.

Look, obviously I knew that Fraiser as a character started on Cheers and then went on to have his own show (which they're actually bringing back soon btw). I also knew that he would probably show up soon since I know that Kelsey Grammer has played the character for a record-breaking number of years (can't remember the number off the top of my head). What I wasn't expecting was that he would be DIANE'S FIANCĂE!? And that they met when she was INSTITUTIONALIZED AFTER HER RELATIONSHIP WITH SAM FELL APART!? What the actual fuck!? This is the smartest character in your show, even you've said it, and this is the way you treat her? The misogyny and sexism here is DEEP.
