In many cultures, ethnic groups, and nations around the world, hair is considered a source of power and prestige. African people brought these traditions and beliefs to the Americas and passed them down through the generations.
In my mother’s family (Black Americans from rural South Carolina) the women don’t cut their hair off unless absolutely necessary (i.e damage or routine trimming). Long hair is considered a symbol of beauty and power; my mother often told me that our hair holds our strength and power. Though my mother’s family has been American born for several generations, it is fascinating to see the beliefs and traditions of our African ancestors passed down. We are emotionally and spiritually attached to our hair, cutting it only with the knowledge that we are starting completely clean and removing stagnant energy.
Couple this with the forced removal and covering of our hair from the times of slavery and onward, and you can see why so many Black women and men alike take such pride and care in their natural hair and love to adorn our heads with wigs, weaves, braids, twists, accessories, and sharp designs.
Hair is not just hair in African diaspora cultures, and this is why the appropriation and stigma surrounding our hair is so harmful.

PEOPLE:
STOP COMING TO TUMBLR FOR NEWS.
There are live updates happening on most major news outlets. Posts circulating on tumblr are behind the times. If you want ACTUAL UP TO DATE NEWS with a minimum of panic and rabble-rousing then check elsewhere.
Yes, this is as bad as it looks. No, a panicky tumblr post does not have all the information. Prefer verifiable facts to social media soundbites.

NBC live updates
NY Times live updates
CBS live updates
C-SPAN live video feeds (heads up: these are live and I’m not sure what content might be inside—so call this a violent-content warning)
Reuters article (updating but not a live feed)
Additionally, check your state and local news sources. There are related events already happening at the state/local level—it’s equally important for you to know what’s happening close to home. Be informed!

Hey if you’ve ever reblogged a post about how black trans women got you your LGBT rights please also reblog this link to Miss Major’s retirement fund as she is quite literally one of those black trans women who got you those rights and also she’s still protesting and working to better our society to this day and also maybe read up on her (here’s a good starting point) and her organization house of gg (link)
Between Oct. 2018-Jul. 2019, this Fundly raised $80,000 toward Miss Major's basic needs. Following her recent stroke, additional donations w

i remember being like 11 and asking my dad why he hunts and kills deer and he said “because i think theyre beautiful” and that’s just. that’s just what men are like
Yeah… &?
Is it any different that women seeing cute things & wanting to squish their face?
Is killing different than endearing physical contact? Local man unsure
I really like … many aspects of hunting. And I think animals are beautiful. may I present
What is the point of mounting something like this sad, gross, proof that you will end a beautiful life for no good reason….
when you could frame you up a trophy like the photo below !?
This takes at least as much skill, and involves all the same wilderness stalking. It proves that you are both brave AND compassionate. There’s no downside to doing this instead. Imagine you go to somebody’s home, and they have a trophy room filled with beautifully composed close up photos of wolves and deer and boar and eagles and things all over the walls, with a couple camera guns mounted up there too - on one wall is a photo of a standing bear who obviously sees the person taking the photo and it’s been blown up so the bear is life size (that’s why you need that gun-barrel lens, so the quality holds up when you enlarge the pic) The person you are visiting is like, “yeah, I took all these.” THAT’s impressive. A room full of dead things just means they are weird and gross and pointlessly cruel and proud of it.
My dad goes out into the woods and takes pictures all the time. He still calls it “hunting” and when he comes home, he literally says “Hey, look at what i shot!” So doing this allows not only for great photos and time with nature, but also an A+ Dad Joke.
“Guy finds a baby possum having trouble keeping up with their mom and returns the little fella to her”

can y’all imagine if aliens did this?? Like imagine ur on a distant planet and your group begins to leave you behind- you’re too slow- and all of a sudden this absolutely fucking massive, hairless monster strolls up to you. So youre standing there, paralyzed in fear, and it just gently picks you up, chases your group until theyre close enough, and just sets you down in the middle of them and leaves. Thats fucking insane what a wild day that little possum had huh
Reminder that it really doesn’t matter what ways you’re marginalized, if you’re not black you’re just as capable of anti blackness as white cishet people. No amount of “but I’m gay!”, “but I’m trans!”, or “but I’m not white!” changes that.
And being neurodiverse/disabled isn’t an excuse for anti blackness either.
Don’t like this post if you’re not gonna also reblog it.
Boost my voice, don’t just like it for woke points.
I’d fucking love it if white people didn’t use this post to pat themselves on the back. I guarantee that no amount of “don’t people know this already?” or “isn’t this obvious?” will actually make you a good ally to black people.
The only things that will make you a good ally to us is listening to us, boosting our voices, defending us when we need it, calling out your fellow whites when they display overt and/or covert racist behavior, and checking yourself consistently.
If everyone can be anything, everyone can be racist.
