“You skipped the second problem,” Rodney snapped, and John froze.
He was frowning. John didn’t frown. He smirked. He grinned.
“And you skipped the day we learned about the food pyramid in elementary school. Gas station burritos are not a major food group, despite what you seem to think. I don’t see how you eat that shit at all, much less for breakfast. When’s the last time you ate anything else?” John’s shoulder’s were set, his eyes hard. This wasn’t teasing. This was John picking an honest-to-god fight. Rodney had missed something.
He wasn’t one to back down, though. “I’ll have you know, Mercedes,” he hissed quietly, because class was still technically in session and he didn’t want to get fired again, “I’m hypoglycemic and shit fucking broke, so I’m picking the cheapest edible calories I can find to keep me alive. What’s your excuse, Mr. three-fucking-Jolt-Colas?”
John’s eyes travelled, sweeping over him, and surely it was just a cruel inspection, but it felt a little like being devoured. Rodney managed not to fidget. There was a flicker of sadness in John’s eyes that Rodney almost missed, then the smirk emerged. The teasing sparkle was back, and it felt odd, the relief that Rodney experienced. “Actually,” he crooned as he leaned in, grin toothy and almost mean, “it was four. I had one on the way to class.”
Rodney saw red for a moment as John breezed out the door. He tried hard not to breathe John’s cologne in, something that smelled expensive and alluring. His gaze fell on John’s paper, problem still unanswered, and he let it take the brunt of his glare since John was gone.
