friend found a dead mole behind the library today

slicked down velvet fur, pink nose

hefty forepaw bent back, stiff, imagine it waving

ran to red square, made a transaction

mole slipped out of satchel of maple leaves

into ziplock scrounged from herbarium drawers

almond joy placed gently in friend’s palm

supervisor will teach me to skin them

in one week’s time

on the clock of course

a life underground, above in death

and draped in tender care

didn’t get to taxidermy my beloved mole on the schedule described here but rather in the last week of my final quarter

here he is, need to name him

Like two years ago I ran into a salamander biologist in the woods who complimented my ability to 'walk quietly in the forest while causing minimal disturbance to the leaf litter.' Still goes to my head.
