Every picture of romance paints in shades of pink so diluted that they're very nearly pure white. A canvas of tender cherry blossom, of wispy cotton candy, of blushing rose petal; a canvas of such exquisitely delicate affection that the paint fumes smell of only sugar – so what am I to do when the fumes of my love are noxious?

I ought to be willing to compromise, to sacrifice, to harmonize; I ought to be selfless and moderate and yet I am selfish and excessive. I paint in my own blood and when the wounds crust over I’d swear that the scabs are pure black. I'm incapable of loving romantically – I can only love in the form of avarice.

Dark evenings alone on my bathroom floor, grasping for a peace of mind that
