Thoughts on E3 and Fallout 76
This E3 is pretty funny so far, between stuff I didn’t expect to like or expect to even see and stuff that was expected and even announced to be here that hasn’t shown up yet, this is the most excitement I’ve gotten out of an E3 in a long long time. Unsurprised that I’m still excited for more Assassin’s Creed games even though I haven’t even played Origins yet. That’s just me though, I like that franchise. Skull and Bones looks great though, and even seems to be what Sea of Thieves was promised to be. Was surprised anything was shown of Cyberpunk 2077 and while I am excited to see that game finally arriving I’m tempering my expectations after so many years of build up. That and like William Gibson pointed out, it doesn’t really look like they’re exploring the genre. Most surprising to me was the Resident Evil 2 remake reveal. I just hadn’t heard anything about that until the trailer came out and that was a pleasant surprise. Resident Evil 2 was the first of the franchise I ever played and I will be grabbing the remake. I was disappointed that only a trailer seems to have come out for Sinking City as that’s a game I have been wanting to see more of for a while now. Similarly, Call of Cthulhu had a presentation yesterday which they haven’t shared online. I’d like to see and hear more about both.
And of course there’s all the hype around Bethesda. Elder Scrolls VI won’t be out for at least two years so I am not going to get too worked up about it for now, but it is nice to know more will be coming. Fallout 76 though is the focus of everyone’s attention right now. And the one thing for sure that is good about Fallout 76, is that it is an attempt to do something new. I’d rather Bethesda try to do something new, rather than make their format stale. That said I’ve already seen the fan base diverging into camps for and against it. And while some of those people who are against it are probably just terrified of change, it is hard to completely write off the concerns. After all, Bethesda has established Fallout as a specific type. Will this new type fit the current fanbase? Are they even aiming for them? The biggest concern of course is that Fallout 76 is multiplayer. I for one don’t mind this, as I have many friends who want to play it so I can play with them. But totally understand why people worry about this. Multiplayer games can become toxic environments so easily. Some people are not going to be used to the survival genre, or they have seen videos on youtube of some of the worst kinds of gamers and are put off by it. Expecting the worst of humanity and that’s understandable those sorts of people do play after all.
This said if you’re looking for someone to play @Fallout with you can always come and introduce yourself to the gaming group I play with on Discord - https://discord.gg/NpUznF Just say hi, let us know you found the link via Ebonrook (that’s me) and that you wanna play Fallout. We’re planning to play Fallout 76, but we also already play lots of other games, like Conan Exiles, WoW, Battlefield and more. Some come and say hello, especially if you want to play the new Fallout and don’t want to have to settle for strangers over the internet!
