The Elephant’s Answer: Rising Above the Quack of Gossip
by Sir Mert Villanueva
In the heart of a lush, sun-drenched jungle, where the leaves whispered wisdom and the rivers sang peace, lived a magnificent elephant named Elio. Towering and calm, with ears like ancient fans and eyes that carried the silence of the stars, Elio was known for his strength - not just of body, but of mind.
One sweltering afternoon, a cunning fox named Rolf scurried up to Elio, breathing heavily as if he bore a message from the heavens.
“Elio,” Rolf panted, “you won’t believe what I’ve heard! That pesky duck, Dabble, is going around telling everyone you’re a fraud. He says you’re lazy, that your size makes you slow, and that you’re not as wise as they think. He’s mocking your silence as weakness!”
Elio, without blinking, looked out toward the horizon & said slowly, “Thank you for telling me. I will teach him a lesson he will never forget. Now go back to your den. Leave the rest to me.”
Rolf grinned, believing a storm was brewing. But the next day, Dabble was still quacking away, and Elio remained silent. Furious, Rolf returned.
“You said you’d take care of it, but he’s still mocking you in every pond and tree stump! He’s turning others against you. This is not the time for patience - it’s time for war!”
Elio, calm as ever, replied, “Indeed, it's time. Leave it to me.”
On the 3rd day, Rolf came back, visibly agitated. “He’s now calling you a coward, Elio. You’re the biggest animal here, yet you let a duck insult your name? Don’t you have any pride?”
Elio turned, his trunk swinging thoughtfully. “Bring me a cutlass, a shovel, and an axe,” he said.
Rolf, finally satisfied, rushed to fetch the tools, imagining vengeance at last. He handed them to Elio, but instead of charging toward Dabble, Elio trudged steadily to his farm.
There, under the golden sun, he cleared brush, tilled soil, and planted seeds. His massive frame moved with gentle purpose.
Confused, Rolf shouted, “Wait! I thought you were going to teach Dabble a lesson?”
Elio stopped & smiled. “I am,” he said. “But not with fists or fury. You see, Rolf, some creatures are born to quack. That’s all they know - noise. But I was born to build, to grow & to create. Why would I waste my strength responding to the empty echoes of someone who thrives on attention? While he gossips, I grow. While he lies, I plant truth. And while he tries to pull others down, I rise - higher, stronger, and in peace.”
He placed the tools beside him. “I’ll return these when I’m done building a legacy. Dabble can keep quacking. That’s all he’s ever done. But I’ve got bigger things to do.”
Moral of the Story:
In life, you’ll encounter “ducks”—people who gossip, belittle, and attempt to provoke you. But like Elio the Elephant, choose dignity over drama. Focus on building your dreams, not breaking down others. Power isn’t loud—it’s purposeful.
3 Real-Life Lessons:
1. At Work: When colleagues spread false rumors or try to undermine your success, don’t get pulled into the drama. Let your excellence and work ethic speak louder than any accusation.
2. On Social Media: You might be criticized, mocked, or misunderstood online. Responding to every insult drains your energy. Stay focused on your message and your mission.
3. In Relationships: Jealousy can make people gossip, especially when you’re growing and they’re stagnant. Don’t shrink to their level—continue evolving and let time reveal your truth.
