eA glorified doodle (thanks, photoshop!) of my favorite flightless bird (unfortunately extinct), the Stephens Island wren. I used prior illustrations as references and tried to do some interesting poses based on what I know about other birds. These guys were discovered when the lighthouse keeper’s cat brought him one on tiny Stephens Island in New Zealand. Unfortunately, due to the introduced feral cats and probably the price that specimens of this little guy fetched, the species was extinct within a year. One of the infinite reasons extinction is so painful is that we can never know for sure anything about the extinct animal’s behavior. Did they engage in mating displays? Did they scratch itches above or below the wing? What was their posture when they ran? What did their songs sound like, if they indeed sang at all? All we can do is speculate, based on what we know about similar creatures. Behavior is basically my favorite thing about animals… it’s a pity these little guys are gone.

April 1, 2022 - Dodo (Raphus cucullatus)

Once found in dry forests on the island of Mauritius, these large flightless birds in the dove family were probably last seen in 1662. Just over three feet (one meter) tall, their exact appearance is no longer known, as only bones, a dried head and foot, descriptions, and illustrations survive and many of the accounts are contradictory. They fed on fruit and probably also nuts, seeds, and roots, though there are few records of their diet. Nesting on the ground, they likely laid clutches of a single egg. As they evolved on an island without major predators they were easy prey for humans and their nests were vulnerable to invasive species, including dogs, pigs, cats, rats, and monkeys.

Note: While researching this bird I was surprised at how little information we actually have about them and how inaccurate most of the surviving images are thought to be. Because of this I consider this drawing to be my own artistic interpretation of a dodo and can’t claim any particular scientific accuracy.
