Gifts for the Goddess

>Deep inside the forest surrounding the mountain of Arcadia there was a pond. Locally it was known as the Goddess Pond. And since arriving in Arcadia, Carter walked to the pond everyday to give an offering.

>Walking through the dark forest in the early morning, Carter wondered if it were perhaps better or worse for the sacred pond to be remote and hidden away. It was harder for worshipers to travel to, but it was perhaps safer out here...more integrated with nature as well.

>Carter said nothing as he leaned down to place his offers. Today was some nice tomatoes he had bought. The were bright and healthy, so Carter thought the Goddess may appreciate them. Returning to his feet, Carter remained to stare at the pond. He was small and insignificant in the eyes of the Divine, but he would be Her follower for life.

>“May the Goddess protect the land.”

Pandora squinted at the man. She didn’t like priests. Her father always spoke ill of them. She wasn’t exactly sure why, but she trusted her father. And what was with him calling her young lady? She supposed he didn’t know her title, so she could excuse it this one time.

“I need a min- er child,” she said, correcting herself. Despite her expression, Pandora was excited to have her very own mini-minion. Adults never understood her. 

>It seemed like this would be an interesting conversation, Carter thought to himself. Now he hadn’t been an in charge of an orphanage for long, but he was pretty sure this wasn’t a average request.

>Carter continued smiling as he asked her, “Are you looking for a specific child?” He, frankly, had no idea what she really asking for; but he was looking forward to finding out.

Pandora wasn’t making much progress with her current minions, Lest and Wizard. She needed more obedient underlings. As everyone knows, children make the best minions, so clearly the only logical solution would be to adopt a child (or two) from the orphanage.

Once at Daybreak Orphanage, Pandora spotted a man in priest’s garb. With a grimace, she approached. “Do you work here, mortal?”

>Things at the Orphanage had been a little hectic since Carter took over ownership, but it was mostly administrative matters. The children didn’t have much change for them, perhaps getting used to a new face.

>Today had been a slow day so far. The church he planned to work at was still indisposed and the responsibilities for the orphanage taken care of. Carter was left to sit at the reception area, where he could be accessible to any visitors, staff, or children that needed him.

>Hearing the door open, Carter looked up from the book he was reading. It was a young woman, probably a teenager. Not one of the children living at the orphanage though. She was dressed in an interesting costume, that paired with her silver hair and red-pink eyes made her quite striking. It wasn’t unusual for young people to experiment with their appearance though, so Carter disregarded it as strange. Well until she spoke.

>There were sometimes children like this....and adults as well, so Carter was just momentarily shocked by the girl calling him a ‘mortal’. It was true after all. Carter smiled gently at the girl, answering her question without questioning the costume or chose off words. “Ah, good afternoon. Yes, I do work here. How may I help you, young lady?”

Why oh why did she decide to do this?

She knew she wasn’t the biggest fan of bugs, especially ones with wings. So why did she think it was a good idea to trek into Fugue Forest and spend her precious time catching insects? 

Well, money was one thing. She was saving up to buy a nice watering can for herself. And she knew places around town that would buy insects. Maybe if she didn’t see a flying one she’d be okay. 

Wrong.

“EEP!” She shrieked, dashing through the forest like a madman, dropping her bug net along the way. She didn’t care where she went, just so long as it was away from that horrible beast. 

Thankfully, she wasn’t alone in the forest. She just so happened to run into another person. Quite literally. She crashed into said person, sending them both to the ground.

“Oh dear! I’m so sorry! Are you hurt?”

>When Life wasn’t working or sleeping, he usually explored his surroundings. And nearby the farm he worked and stayed out, was a thick, dark forest. This had drawn Life’s attention. He had heard of forests, but he had never been in one.

>Life entered the forest, quietly observing everything around him. The sounds inside were different. He could hear the calls of many different creatures. He couldn’t hear the calls of humans though. Humans lived outside the woods, other creatures lived in the woods...

>As he was gradually wandering deeper, Life heard the call of a larger creature. It stood out among the rest. He heard it once, and then he did not hear it again. Life stopped completely.  He could hear rustling now. Something was running.

>A person, he could now see, was running in towards him. Life did not understand. He stood still, watching the person, curious. The person ran into him, as if they had not noticed him. The impact forced Life and the person to fall.

>Life stared blankly as the person pushed their self up, looked at him, and spoke to him. He processed their words for a moment. From what he could sense, he was not injured. And they apologized, so...the person ran into him by accident.

>“ I’m not hurt....” Life responded, then thought for a moment before asking, “Why were you running?” Running expended more energy, so a person wouldn’t run when they could walk...so there must be a reason.

Matai looked down at the person he had unfortunately ran into, raising an eyebrow. Well, he could definitely see some pent-up rage in there. He had been a second away from apologizing, as he hadn’t been paying attention (in fact, he had been trying to pickpocket someone else on the road), but instead he looked…a bit amused, even. 

And then he said something so interesting to Matai that he couldn’t help but swiftly follow behind the guy after he was clipped.

“Oh? What was that? I don’t believe I heard you,” Matai spoke in a sing-song manner, walking fast until he was walking at the same pace as the man.

>And now the trash was following him. Great. Refusing to quicken his pace to get away from this filth trailing behind him like toilet paper stuck to his shoe, Gelwein maintained his brisk pace.

>Gelwein frowned, but despite his annoyance he did not bother to even look at the other man as he spoke. “Unless you are hard of hearing like you are visually impaired, I think you heard me just fine.” he said said smirking slightly to himself.

Perhaps the reason Pandora was getting no where with her plans of world conquest is that this era has forgotten the greatest threat this world has ever know. Her. There had to be a way to remind people of the fear she inspired in the hearts of many so many years ago.

There had to be records of her wondrous deeds. A library would seem like a good start, but no, she needed to go bigger! The Arcadia Historical Society had to have records of her. There was no doubt in her mind that she left a mark on history.

Entering the building, Pandora immediately found a-oh what did these mortals of this day call them? oh yes-nerd. “You. Come here.” She beckoned forward the bespectacled mortal.

>Immediately Gelwein was annoyed to be addressed in such a way, but he was finding good information with job and did not want to lose it so soon. So sliding on his amicable smile, Gelwein walked over to the brat.

>He noticed something was off about her. From her garments to her pointed ears, she oozed of non-human. And he was now that he was closer, Gelwein was sensing some heavy levels of magic pouring out of her. Very Interesting...

>Sensing a good opportunity, Gelwein’s smile widened. “How can I help you, Miss?” he asked politely as stood next to her.

>It was hard to wear a mask everyday without it cracking slightly. There were certain situations where it became too hard for Gelwein to rein himself in. Like now for example. Gelwein was staring up at someone who had just knocked him down. They had not been paying any attention of course and just ran straight into him. The scowl on his face was intense and the air was thick with tension.

>Briskly standing up, Gelwein wiped dust and dirt off of his pants. Disgusting truly. He looked back at the insolent fool who ran into him, grinding his teeth harshly. It took outrageous strength not to outright strangle the life out of the trash standing before him. Unfortunately, or not, He could not hold his tongue this time.

> “You are the most worthless piece of trash I have ever had the displeasure of even looking at.” His tone was sharp and cold as he spoke. Stepping aside, Gelwein started to continue on his way. With his eyes straight ahead, he harshly clipped the shoulder of the one who had knocked into him not even a minute ago as he walked past them.

•｡ ❀ 𝒲ith the moonlight filling the front room to the apartment, Iris Noire basked in the solitude of darkness - selecting flowers from the bouquet she gathered whilst on an evening stroll to place in a vase. She pressed her fingertips together on the individual petals, smiling softly towards the beautiful color - and the feeling of freshness and life emitting from them. Oftentimes, the atmosphere within the apartment seemed dull and stagnant; thus, the vampire took it upon herself to spice it up with a small piece of decór. Hopefully, she sighed, Gelwein would appreciate it as much as she did - he typically wasn’t fond when she attempted to change things up.

𝒜nd speaking of the devil (figuratively speaking, of course), in through the door came the gentleman whose appearance was shrouded in darkness.

“𝒢ood evening, Gelwein.” Iris Noire greeted him, stepping aside from the coffee table where the glass vase sat with a couple of flowers inside. “What do you think of these flowers? Are they… pretty?” 

>Flowers. They served no purpose to Gelwein. But it was no good to unnecessary impose stress on his asset. Displaying a gentle smile on his face, Gelwein walked over to Iris.

>He stared at the flowers for a moment before turning to her, “Yes, they are splendid. You’ve done well.” He patted her head gently before drawing his arm back over.

>The smile of his face lowered very minutely. “Now tell me, Iris, where did you get these?” She must’ve left again....how annoying.

Sonja yawned as she got off of work. Today was a slow day, but she couldn’t stop thinking about her father and the past she never knew the nigth before. So, she decided today was a good day as any for a visit to the Historical Society!

She was ever so grateful that Gelwein was helping her do this. She wasn’t quite the best at history, so making sense of an artifact was way out of her league. He seemed a bit weird at times, but Sonja just chalked it up to his love for history and stuff like that. It didn’t seem too weird anyways. Who’s she to judge?

She put away the comb her father left her in her pocket, and swung the doors right open, a big smile on her face. Gelwein was probably not expecting her today, hah! This probably surprised him. Looking around, she saw the man shifting through some documents with intense concentration.

‘Huh. Wonder what that’s about.’ A mental shrug. 'Probably something I’ll never understand.’

“Gelwein!” She chimed, walking right up to his desk with a smile. “I’m back! Do you have anything new?”

>Normally Gelwein disliked surprises. It’s annoying when things did not go according plan. But Sonja showing up with an innocent smile on her face looking for new information was not unexpected. 

>Allowing a pleasant smile to adorn his face, Gelwein turned to Sonja while closing the book he was examining. “Well hello there, Sonja.” he responded cordially.

>“I have actually found a route to some possible answers,” he had not, in fact, found in anything like that or even looked, “but I have some inquires for you first to help me fill in some blanks.”

>“As I seem to recall you mentioning previously, your mother was a priestess of some kind....correct?”

>Gelwein had invited Sonja to the Arcadian Historical Society where he was currently working. Sonja was a energetic young lady who Gelwein befriended recently. She was terribly naive. He was most interested in her for her abilities as a priestess. But having an ally never hurt. That was something he had to learn from his time at college.

>In an effort to keep Sonja feeling indebted, Gelwein had been looking for information on Sonja’s estranged father. Well that wasn’t really true. Stringing her along with bits of useless or fake information was really what he was doing. But Sonja believed his every word. It was too easy easy, honestly.

>In the meantime, Gelwein continued carefully sorting some historical texts. He always kept an eye out for useful information among the records. There was nothing concrete yet, but this ‘Exire’ had caught his interest....
