âSounds like a lot of work.â Iliya was tired just thinking about it. Considering sheâd accumulated quite a list of enemies it might be easier just to alert her to the things that werenât her enemy. âMaybe Iâll tell ya about it someday.â Iliya spoke up as they made it to her complex. She typed in the code to get through the front gate then led Isabel up to her own apartment. âFor now, letâs find the booze.â
The werewolf opened the door to a room filled with boxes. A short walk down a hallway opened up to a big room, the kitchen to the right, a living room space in front with couches still covered in fabric to avoid dirt, the windows were shut, drapes drawn but they opened up to the city street below. Iliya turned off into the kitchen narrowing down to one box. She opened it with a claw and began pulling out the assortment of flavored vodkasâ some would cringe, but she loved the sweetest, nastiest ones. One bottle she put off to the side, most of them were from parties sheâd thrown, the left behind gifts of her guests, but this particular wine she bought herself. âYâcan have anything you want. Think I got mixers in the fridge.âÂ
âHey, you know what would be cool? âŠif we went in search of those people who went missing. LikeâŠif we found them, weâd be heroes right? Whatâs the pay for heroes?â
âGod, we gotta get your apartment in order, dude.â It was a nice place, Isa figured, but Iliya kept putting off actually moving in, boxes littering the place. Part of her understood the sentiment: she hadnât wanted to make her own place a home either, but at this point, Iliya had been in town for longer than she had.
âYou still got that fuckinâ.. caramel vodka? Iâm in the mood for something awful,â Isabel said, and her lips split for a grin, booze getting to her â finally. âItâs kinda nice. Sometimes. In like, the right.. light, or whatever.â Not light. Light didnât affect flavour. What was she thinking of? The witch snapped her fingers, gaze gaining that faraway look. âUh.. Shit. Fuck. âS not âlightâ. Ugh. Anyway.â
âI want that, âf youâve got it still.â Her fingers traced the top of a box, Isabel idly looking out the window for a moment. It felt like she was leaving her body â not in a witch way, but in a.. weird one. A human one. The way it felt when she remembered why sheâd come here in the first place, to Verth Hollow, just another girl on the run. It was as if a lifetime had passed since sheâd hopped in that car and fried it with her fucking hand trying to get away.
â-- Huh? The pay for heroes?â This was easier. She loved Iliya for that â the smiles and the laughter and the normalcy, even in the face of what they were. A witch and a werewolf walk into a bar... âI donât think itâs a whole lot. Glory, maybe? Or maybe âs that big break with the Verth police force thatâll like, make âem give you a badge; no way around it.â She felt grounded. Didnât have to force the smile.
âWe could try,â she said, a little less joking. âBut this place is weird. You feel it too, right?â
