âGuess whoâs got two thumbs and is no longer being held for questioning? This dude! Police couldnât prove anything about hypothetical treason. Davey, back at it again with the dropped charges.â
âDude! Can you imagine if you had THREE thumbs? Youâd be a circus act. Or youâd be like the giant thumbs from Spy Kids. Either way having more than two thumbs would be dope. Did you have to stay in a cell? Before the cops learned to just call Lilith when I was sleeping on a park bench they used to take me into the holding cell place. I always got the charges on me dropped too! We should celebrate!âÂ
Caleb: I'VE NEVER GOTTEN TO DRIVE ONE OF THOSE BUT THEY'RE KINDA CLUNKY AND HARD TO STEER, THEY SEEM LIKE THEY'D ONLY BE GOOD GETAWAY VEHICLES IF YOU WERE ON A WIDE OPEN ROAD.
Caleb: Sure! I love movies, they're awesome. That's a long time to go without seeing any, too, we might need to go to like ten to make up for lost time.
Hale: You have to go find one immediately! Wanna visit a nursing home?
Hale: The only time I could see a movie is when I snuck into one because I always pressed for cash. Are there ten playing?
Caleb: No, I think they're boring and use knives and stuff and pretend they're the Joker. If they used horns or tricycles, though, then they'd sorta have earned their right to murder almost because who can't outrun a tricycle?
Caleb: Wait, don't answer that, wheelchair people exist.
Caleb: It's a Steven King movie about a clown. They're remaking it so you could probably see a new updated one pretty soon.
Hale: But there are motorized wheelchairs! Those are super fast! I stole one one time and rode it around the neighborhood for a few hours. It was really fun.
Hale: Oh cool! I haven't been to a movie in like, 5 years. We should go together!
Caleb: Yeah! I think they're like murder clowns, when it gets real rainy now I'm afraid to send things floating down the gutters because I don't want to see It on the inside of them when I save my boat.
Hale: What do they murder people with? Horns? Their small tricycles? What's It?
Caleb: I used to like them a lot, too, until I saw It and people started trying to imitate it in real life. I should hang out with you more often, you could protect me from them when they come to Coolsville.
Hale: People are being clowns outside the circus? No way! I wanna see one! I'm not really scared of anything, so sure! I'll protect you!
Caleb: That's one vote hammerhead, two votes taco... but your way is awesome, I'd be totally ready if one of the creepy clowns tried to attack me on Halloween!
Hale: Clowns are fun! They have big noses and usually ride those little tiny tricycles. I used to sell tickets and popcorn and stuff at a circus so I like clowns a lot.
JACE: It's not gonna get out, she don't have nothing to worry about. She probably did, she's nice like that...sometimes. I told ya she wouldn't be going anywhere. Are you feeling better now that you know she's okay?
HALE: She was really mad the other night. It was scary. Not at me though so I just kept playing with my dinosaur bone kit that Rowan got me. Yeah, I feel better.
SAGE: Well, according to Rowan, Lilith is going to be out very soon. You'll be able to spend time with her without the weirdness of the hospital. They are pretty great, especially the bearded dragon, and the snake. I'm not a fan of the piranhas, though.
HALE: She's out now! Rowan made me practice getting close to her before I could see her because she thought I would get too excited. She made me pet her most fragile pet like ten times before she let me go. I like the piranhas! They're fun!
SAGE: That's understandable. If you don't want to go, then tell Rowan. I'm sure she won't force you to, and Lilith will understand. She'll be home soon, and you won't have to go anymore anyway.
HALE: She took me once when she first woke up but seeing people in all the white coats makes me feel weird inside. I've been hanging out with Rowan's animals all day. They're cool.
JACE: It's still a secret, don't worry. Nobody has told anybody outside of Coke Skwad. I'm sure it's gonna be real soon. She's probably all caught up on sleep by now. Have you been sleeping?
HALE: Ok good. She would be sad if it got out. She's awake now. I wasn't sleeping too good on the floor but sometimes I'd wake up in the bed so I guess Rowan moved me. I can sleep in the bed now that I know she's not gone away.
WHAT: Lilith and Hale get in a car accident and Hale runs to Rowanâs.
WHERE: Coolsville.
WHEN: Monday, September 26th 2016.
WARNINGS: Trauma????
Hale couldn't believe what she'd just seen. There was no way she could process the events that occurred within the last ten minutes without sending herself into shock. She'd been in the car with Lilith, driving to the grocery store because Hale had begged Lilith to take her to get snacks. Not like she had enough at home, but she wanted a specific kind of donut. One she'd only ever had once but was determined to find it again. They were driving, and Lilith was laughing at something Hale had said; not a mean laugh, but a kind one. It was never a mean laugh. She took her eyes off the road for one second to look over at Hale, and then everything spun out of control. She couldn't remember exactly what had happened, just that all of the sudden the car was bending in ways that it shouldn't have and glass was everywhere. Hale always had the life motto of turning a blind eye to the bad things, but she couldn't pretend she didn't see this. There was blood and glass everywhere, she couldn't move for a few seconds. Her seatbelt was still snapped in, glass shards stuck between it and her skin. Hale looked over to the driver's side to see Lilith hunched over the steering wheel, eyes closed. It was almost too surreal that Hale thought she might be hallucinating. Lilith looked like she'd just fallen asleep in the most uncomfortable position one could find in a car. Hale scrambled to undo her seatbelt and leaned over to wake Lilith up, wanting to tell her that she needed to get up because they hadn't finished their donut quest yet. Hale shook Lilith's shoulder, gently at first then when Lilith didn't respond she tried again harder. When it became obvious that for the first time since Hale had known her, Lilith wasn't going to respond to her Hale tried yelling. She thought she was using her full volume, but when she thought about it she realized she couldn't hear herself at all. There wasn't enough noise in the world that could make Lilith wake up right now, and Hale didn't know what to do. In the distance, she heard police sirens wailing, getting louder as they got closer to the car. Hale panicked, not knowing what to do and kicked her passenger door open, taking off into the night. She couldn't feel anything, and she couldn't really see anything either. Her vision was blurry, and her thoughts were cloudy. She didn't know where to go or what to do, and the only address she could remember was Rowans; Lilith would write it down for her every time she left to go spend time with her and Hale figured if Lilith cared that much to make sure she knew how to get to Rowan's if she needed to, that was her best bet. It took her a while to navigate herself around the streets of Coolsville, since she was still relatively new, but she made it eventually. Coming to a full stop in front of Rowan's door, she knocked a few times.
Rowan hadnât felt this uneasy for years. Ever since her life changed so drastically, she did whatever she could to stay emotionally unattached, unfeeling and uncaring about anyone that came into her life. She didnât have any friends, and she most certainly didnât change fuck buddies or submissives into anything more. As soon as Lilith made it clear that Tatiana had told her about Rowan sleeping with Sage and Bridget, and that she wasnât happy about it, the usually calm and collected woman felt like a mess. She wasnât hiding her endeavors in the slightest, but talk of them hadnât really entered conversation. She had tried to explain that, and explain that nothing with them was anything like their special type of relationship. She had explained things about herself that she hadnât ever shared with another soul, but none of it would fix what had happened. It had taken all day to convince the girl that meant more to Rowan than sheâd admit to herself to come over later that night to talk. In all honesty, the thought that Lilith could very easily call off their arrangement was terrifying. She had finally gotten used to having someone around, and it would be taken away from her like all the other things that were too good for her. After what seemed like hours of brooding, sat on her arm chair and smoking, Rowan finally heard a knocking at her door. In hindsight, it seemed a little strange that Lilith wouldnât just let herself in as usual, but perhaps their normal customs werenât in play that evening. Stubbing out her cigarette and standing up, Rowan made her way over to the door, swiftly unlocking it and preparing herself. Swinging the door open, Rowan almost took a step backwards as she found herself face to face with a frightened, shivering Hale. The pathologist was no stranger to a crime scene, and was more perceptive than most when it came to pinpointing tell tale signs. Her eyes flickered around Hale, to the blood on her clothes, the gashes on her exposed skin, the tiny glass shards embedded in her clothes. She had seen it all before. As soon as the realization struck her, Rowan felt her body turn to ice and her jaw tense as her adrenaline kicked in. She didnât need to ask what happened, and honestly, she wasnât sure she would be able to listen to the explanation and not have her legs fail her and fall to her knees. This couldnât be happening. Not again. âWhere is she?â Rowan asked, her voice sounding alien to even her own ears. Grabbing her keys with one hand, Rowan pulled the door of her apartment closed behind her before pulling Hale close to her side and under her arm as she walked them quickly down to her car.
Hale opened her mouth to say something when Rowan answered the door, but it was like her brain had shut off. She couldn't even remember how to greet her properly, although she guessed it didn't matter judging by the look on Rowan's face as soon as she took Hale in. She didn't realize what was happening until she was already halfway to Rowan's car, tucked under one of Rowan's arms. She couldn't go back to where Lilith was. She might not know much about law, but she did know that you're never supposed to return to the scene of the crime. She ducked out from under Rowan and backed up a few paces, almost tripping over her own feet in the process, "I can't. I don't want to." She looked down at her hands and pulled one of the larger pieces of glass out from her palm and then looked back up at Rowan. "She's gonna be sad. The windows exploded." There was an enormous amount of nervous energy running through Hale that hadn't been dulled by the near 3 mile run she'd just done to get to Rowan's apartment, and she felt like she needed to go run about 3 more before she might be able to think straight again.
Rowan wasnât expecting Hale to duck out from under her arm and back away, so she was a little confused as she turned around away from her car, watching Hale almost stumble. Her brow furrowed at Haleâs quiet voice. There was no question that she was anxious to get going and find Lilith to see what was going on. She could be dead or dying. Every moment counted. Letting out a low breath, Rowan closed the distance between her and Hale, taking her hands in her own to grab her attention. âYou have to, but itâs okay. Youâve got me with you now and Iâll look after you both.â Rowan insisted, knowing that she actually meant every word that she was saying. So much for being a loner with no feelings. âYouâre not in trouble and I can assure you sheâs not going to be sad. She needs us to help her.â Rowan tried to explain, completely unused to talking to anyone in such a manner, but it was what needed to be done. Moving to cup Haleâs cheek, she forced her to make eye contact. âYou have to take me to her and I promise Iâll make it better. You can trust me, Hale.â
Hale didn't want to look at Rowan, she didn't want to see the look of urgency that was going to drag Hale back to where Lilith was. Back to where Hale had left her, hanging over the steering wheel. She felt a little better as Rowan's voice became softer and gentler. She didn't like when people were gruff with her, she could never understand their reasoning for it. There was never anything bad enough that could make Hale raise her voice, or speak to someone with even a hint of disdain but she had a feeling that whatever was happening to Lilith was bad. Probably very bad. Hale was a little taken aback by Rowan insisting that she could trust her; she was usually so open with the trust she put in people so she found it odd that someone would be standing in front telling her she could do so. She nodded finally, after being forced to look Rowan in the eyes. "We were going to the store. The one with the big light up sign and the friendliest bakery workers. They all know me by name. Sometimes they give me free cookies."
Rowan let out a steady breath as Hale finally nodded, seemingly relaxing a little against her hand. She could tell that the girl was still a bundle of nerves and shakes, but if this was what Rowan knew it to be, then it was understandable. She would be in shock. âOkay, then we better go and find Lilith,â Rowan replied quietly. She really had no idea where Hale was talking about, so if it had to be a case of checking every store with a bakery in the close vicinity, then so be it. Ushering Hale back under her arm, Rowan helped her into her seat as soon as they got to the car, buckling her in herself to save Hale struggling with shaking hands. When she finally slumped into the driverâs side, Rowan let out steady sigh as she roared the engine to life. She was smart enough to know when her body was acting away from her head, and this was one of those times. She had to get to Lilith, and her emotional side had to make way for her rational one to get her there. âSheâs going to be alright, Hale. Weâre just going to go and get her.â Rowan spoke softly as she began driving at a possibly reckless speed, searching for where they needed to be. Crossing a junction, Rowan caught sight of a fire truck, lights and sirens blazing. The way her stomach dropped was enough to know that her suspicions were probably accurate as they started to follow the truck. Whoever was at the scene, if they had to cut Lilith out, Rowan would be damned if theyâd do anything before she could see her. âItâs going to be okay.â She spoke again, not sure if she was talking to Hale or herself.
Hale let Rowan lead her to the car and buckle her in, grateful that she did because she wasn't entirely sure how well her hands would function under the pressure of having to remember her exact location before she'd ended up at Rowan's door. It hadn't occurred to her that Lilith could be seriously hurt until Rowan kept telling her she was going to be alright, and the closer they got to the street that the oncoming car had barreled into them the more her stomach seemed to twist and flop. She pulled her knees up to her chest, sinking as far as she could into the passenger seat as they followed the fire truck. In her experience, fire trucks usually meant that something bad was happening somewhere. She didn't want to be there, and she definitely wasn't ready to see police cars and the fire trucks surrounding a now crumpled car when they turned onto the street Hale had run from. She was tempted to bolt out of Rowan's moving car, and had her hand on the seatbelt to unlock it before she felt the car rolling to a stop in front of the accident.
Rowan felt her stomach drop as soon as the accident came into view, stopping the car as abruptly as the truck in front. âDonât run anywhere. You need to stay. You have to do that for me.â Rowan requested quietly, mouth closing quickly after the words left her, jaw tightening. Kicking her door open, Rowan let her rational facade drop as she ran towards the car, pushing people behind and away from her as she went. The sight of a mess of black hair attached to a torso slumped through the windscreen was enough to stop Rowan in her tracks. She had seen it all before. It was too familiar, and her chest throbbed down into her stomach. Not again. Not Lilith. Just as she was about to surge forward, Rowan felt a thick hand wrap around her arm and requesting she step back. Finally feeling herself snap, Rowan ripped her arm away from the grasp, pulling her hospital ID from her pocket, torso rising and falling from her panicked breath. âI work at the hospital. Thatâs⌠Thatâs my girlfriend.â She forced out, before her legs sparked back into life to take her towards the car. âLilith⌠Lilith, baby!â Rowan cried, scrambling up onto the car hood to where Lilith was pushed through the broken glass. Raising a shaking hand, Rowan gently attempted to brush back the blood stained locks from her special someoneâs face, finding only a tranquil stillness beneath. âYouâre going to be alright. Theyâre going to cut you out. Iâm right here..â She rambled, desperately letting her fingers make their way to the pulse point in her neck. Fueled by her own panic, Rowan wasnât sure if she felt Lilithsâ heartbeat or her own. Any fighting and upset that had happened earlier in the day meant nothing now. Only Lilith and her wellbeing. âDonât just stand there! Fucking cut her out!â Rowan bellowed, turning to the firefighters that were loitering a short distance away, seemingly muttering about what they were going to do and who the hell Rowan was. Soon enough, they started to spring into action, moving to set up equipment to get Lilith out. âTheyâre going to cut you out. Iâm here.. Haleâs okay. Youâre going to be fine. You just gotta.. Hang on for us. Thereâs a good girl.â She spoke softly, cupping the womanâs pale, lifeless face.
Hale watched Rowan sprint out of the car and to the accident, not verbally giving her a promise she'd stay there, but not making any plans to run either. She didn't like how many people were surrounding them, and how many lights were flashing. It was all a little bit too much for her and she buried her face in her hands, still hunched over in her seat. She didn't look up until she heard rapping on the window, the noise startling her so much that she was sure she looked like a deer in the headlights when her head popped up suddenly. Someone she assumed was from the fire department was outside her window, apparently noticing that Hale was still covered in blood. It was starting to dry though, and she knew she'd be okay after a shower. They motioned for Hale to get out of the car, asking something out loud, but between the glass and her state of shock it all sounded like a garbled mess to her. She just wanted Rowan to come back, and she wanted Lilith to wake up and for them to drive away from the mess in front of her. When the fireman opened Hale's door to talk to her she got scared. He started trying to get her to come out of the car so they could make sure she was okay, and if Hale could have figured out how to get her seatbelt off, she would have jumped over the seat and out of the back of the car. But since she was tied down, all she could do was start yelling to get him to back up. It was nothing cohesive, just a montage of panicked, guttural sounds that got louder and louder as the man stood his ground. She didn't know what else she could do to get him to leave so she extended her legs and shoved him as hard as she could with her feet before pulling them back in almost instantly and curling back up into a ball.
Rowan wasnât sure if it took simply minuets, or a long hour for the firefighters to cut Lilith free from the car. The entire time, Rowan kept her eyes on Lilithâs vacant face for any signs of stress or coloration for crush syndrome. When nothing came, and paramedics started to rush in to stabilize her and fix her to a board, Rowan finally let her hand fall. They wouldnât know anything yet - not really. It would take x-rays and CT scans to really see the severity of what was going on, and Rowan knew she had to make sure Lilith received the best care at the hospital. Trauma surgeons were great at what they did, but Lilith deserved the specialists. Rowan would make that happen. She had to make it happen. âI just have to get hold of somebody. Take her as fast as you can, please.â Rowan pleaded with a passing paramedic that she recognised, receiving a nod. Turning on her heel, Rowan made her shaking way back to her car. As much as she didnât want to leave Lilithsâ side for a second, she had Hale to think about. It would have been too much for her to me shoved into a cramped, speeding ambulance as they rushed to stabilize Lilithsâ life. She needed to be delicate with her, because thatâs what Lilith would have wanted. Spotting Hale shove a firefighter from the car door with her feet, Rowan jogged over just in time to watch him fall back, and Hale to curl back up. âHey..â She spoke softly, after waving off the firefighter. âCome on. Weâre going to go and meet Lilith at the hospital.â Rowan explained, reaching past the frightened girl to unbuckle her seatbelt before lifting her into her arms bridal style. She knew the girl was a flight risk, and the lights and sirens would be a lot for anyone, much less someone who has experienced trauma. Holding her securely, Rowan carried her to the back of the second ambulance that would take them to the hospital.
Hale instantly felt bad for kicking the fireman down since she was never really one to project any kind of physical aggression towards anyone, but she didn't really feel like she had a choice. She heard people buzzing around her, commands and calls being made left and right, and she just let it all pass over her head. She didn't want to be a part of this situation, and as she heard someone else approach her she almost shot out a leg again before realizing it was Rowan. She didn't particularly like being picked up and moved to the one place she really did not want to go, but she didn't want to hurt Rowan and she'd already halfway promised not to run away again so she just buried her face in Rowan's shirt and let herself be carried until she was set down. As soon as she was seated in the back of the ambulance she turned away from everyone again, not wanting either of the paramedics in the back to ask her anything. She didn't like hospitals, and she especially didn't like it when one of her friends was in them, so she figured she would stay like that until Rowan told her it was time to move again.
Rowan could feel the nervous energy radiating from Hale as she sat down beside her in the ambulance. She knew that the girl was probably thinking so much, trying desperately to understand what was going on. All in all, she had no idea where her mind could possibly be going to. She was so naive, it must have been terrifying. Reaching out to take Hales hand as the ambulance started its slower, but still urgent journey to the hospital. She wasn't one for comforting physical contact, but now wasn't really a time to be pedantic about anything. "She'll be okay. I'll make sure she is. She just needs the doctors and I'll get her the best treatment, i promise." Rowan spoke quietly, her jaw tensing. "I'll take care of you, too."
SAGE: It is, but it's going to be okay, just like the oven situation was okay. Rowan said all Lilith's tests are coming back good, which means it's just a case of waiting for her to wake up now. She's just sleeping and healing, Hale. That's all.
HALE: I don't like waiting /: My body hurts from sleeping on the floor.
JACE: Ofelia? She's my girlfriend. She was there on Coke Skwad night. Long black hair, short, really attractive, fucked Lilith? It probably is sad, 'cause your friend is hurt. But it'll be okay again when she's awake.
HALE: Ohhhh yeah. Lilith wanted that to stay a secret. Sage and Rowan both said she was gonna wake up but idk when /:
SAGE: I don't think she'll still be mad about that. That was just an accident, and I'm sure she forgave it as quickly as she got mad about it. She just loves you and is very protective of you, and I'm sure she only got mad in the first place because you could have got hurt.
SAGE: It's going to be okay, Hale. She hasn't left you. She'll be back, just like you came back. I promise. If you really think about it, you know in your heart that she'd never leave you. You're her favorite person.
HALE: I don't know. I left the oven on accidentally the other day when I was making one of those frozen pizzas and she got kinda mad. You think she's still mad about it?
