Dear Tony Awrds and more specifically the American Theatre Wing,

We need to talk.

I understand that The Band’s Visit is an extremely god good musical, I also believe that. But why the heck did it win almost every award tonight? Mean Girls and Spongebob were both nominated for 12 awards each, 24 awards in total but how many awards did they win? 1. 1 singular award for both shows. I’m not saying that The Band’s Visit didn’t deserve the awards it won (well actually some of the awards they won are debatable) but it’s not fun to watch an awards show and have the same 1 or 2 shows win everything.

Spongebob and Mean Girls and yes even Frozen has great performances, songs, books and sound, stage and costume design but they were ignore for the most part to just honor The Band’s Visit. The theatre wing and audiences just view these shows as cash grabs and commercial and not worth anything and that’s not true. People use the Tony Awards to judge shows worth and now people are gonna think the other shows just aren’t good.

There is a pattern that I’ve noticed in the past 3 years that happens with the Tony Awards. Shows like Hamilton and DEH and now The Band’s Visit win every award and every other show kinda gets left in the dust. This can be detrimental to shows like it was for Groundhog Day and Great Comet and now Spongebob is in danger of closing and not receiving barely any awards is not helping its cases. The Tony Awards needs to start being equal with all the shows they nominate and not just give all the awards to one or two shows. This goes for the plays nominated too.

All these shows put some much love, time and hard work into them so to see shows snubbed and ignored is really annoying.

Again this is not a slam against The Band’s Visit as it is a beautiful show but I wish the awards were more spread out and fair.
