at risk of stating the obvious, the reason the borderlands universe is so violent isn't because "the fauna is so aggressive wahh" but directly because of the gun manufacturers. if the world is deadly dangerous then that means the demand for self defense is inelastic (i.e. people will buy it at any price). makes you wonder just how much of the "[insert planet name here] is inhospitable and terrible" rhetoric is in-universe propaganda

the extreme normalization of murder, for one, is certainly a result of corporate propaganda (irl killing someone is not something that comes easy for 99% of humanity. "warrior" societies were often forged in horrible material conditions). i have no doubt 70something years of the oligopoly's rule (plus 30something years of the corporate wars) would be enough to shift the zeitgeist this drastically. my only issue is that no actual capitalist is that future-thinking (unless the six galaxies have developed life extension technology, which is something I already believe wholeheartedly)
