fellmoondoll:
Rykard chuckled darkly, but his eyes bore no humor. How he wished those who dwells behind the high walls of Leyndell were simple, power-drunk lunatics. That, he could at least relate.
No, what irks him was the calculative ambition of Marika’s divine regime. Five centuries into its uncontended reign, the Golden Order was still hellbent on snuffing out any and all who remotely disturbs its absolute perfection. “You know exactly what. It’s not an act of familial love. We are to be the Order’s lapdogs, have it breathe down our necks day and night.”
Rykard’s brow furrowed with these words. An insult, maybe, but with the new demigod stature, Lord Paramount Rykard shall wield influence Prince Rykard of Caria could never have obtained...
Ranni’s mild, but unmistakable accusation snapped him out of his brief trance. Of all people, Ranni now lectures him on the dangers of dark magic. “Have you grown soft in these idle years, sister? Have you not heard of how Mother’s moonlight disintegrated the flesh of her adversaries? What draws the distinction between dark and light?”
Dipping his head, Rykard gently took his sleeve out of Ranni’s grip. That outburst might be uncalled for, but Ranni would understand. She always does.
“When I could not attend to Mother, I promise I’ll assign countermeasures to guard her in my stead. Be assured whatever I did, I did them out of necessity. One cannot walk this path unprepared to sin.”
@fellmoondoll
" Does thou assume I would lay down like a dog and take her orders? " The younger sibling almost growled - the very mention of the Queen of the Golden Order pushing the scarlet-haired woman to anger. The very fact they held Blaidd's life and sanity in their palm, teasing her with it - it nearly drove her mad at times.
But Ranni was her mother's daughter first, the life of the matron mother watched carefully by the princess.
" Demi-god or not, I do not care for anything that woman has to offer. " The woman scoffed, narrowing her gaze as he pulled his sleeve from her grasp. Like any other younger sibling, Ranni still took to confronting him - with arms crossed neatly over her chest.
" I grow no more sensitive than our older brother. Keep to the shadows, Rykard - for if Blaidd can see thou dabbling in the darkness then thy mother can too. Thou knows that in her madness, mother grows to worry for her children. If thou must continue the darkened path, do so without it harming the fragile mind of our mother. " Ranni pressed on, letting her older brother know just how frail the mental state of their mother was.
" Thou worries this younger sister, Rykard. " For if he continued down the path - he would see just what the young princess was up to. Death was nearly in her grasp.
"Nay, I would certainly hope not!" Dei blinked in surprise, "Lest thou'rt to spring a surprise assailment upon mineself, but I verily doubt that," the Tarnished chuckled ever-so-softly.
"I still hold respect for thine's family, 'twas not an easy feat to fell thine's siblings," Dei admitted in a quieter tone.
"I beheld their trifles firsthand and lent myself to end them of their ways of torment, all while they aided mine own journey of gathering the many Great Runes I can—"
"Alas, I seek not all of them. I am nary one for greed, merely grasping at ones placed within mine reach," another soft chuckle escaped his lips.
The Tarnished spoke slight deceit regarding his views on avarice, his draconic-turned eyes telling another story. He, himself, had dove unto the cravings of holding power as well, whether he'd admit to such a thing or not.
Yet, his specific speakings of greed regarding Great Runes was not a dishonesty—he truly did not seek to obtain every single one. He allowed the newly-spinning wheel of fate guide him to where he belonged on his journey, to which Runes he would obtain.
"Indeed I did away with thine's mighty illusion, 'twas a grand thing to behold, if not a difficult clash in tandem," Dei spoke, gazing off as he thought about the battle, "Art thou to cast another, keeping further interlopers deterred?"
Then came the most intriguing part to Dei—Ranni's state was no curse, but self-inflicted.
"Death? As in, the very thing outcast from these lands an epoch ago by Queen Marika herself?" Dei uttered in disbelief, gaze returning to the Lunar Witch, "Why such measures to separate thineself from body, if I may inquire further?"
He listened intently to each of the Witch's chilling, yet ever-calm, words. It was still peculiar to Dei that she would choose to adopt this new visage, by such drastic means no less, but Dei held that view not out of disapproval but, rather, his ever-fervent curiosity.
He had not heeded her corpse, nor the decayed state of once which held a fiery mane of hair of which Dei was most familiar. The Tarnished could only imagine where such a thing might lay, grasped by a once-banished shard of Destined Death.
He saw how many "sweetings" clambered to Rennala in order to be "rebirthed" anew, and thus perhaps such a sentiment of wishing to embody something new, separate from one's past self, was not uncommon.
Dei had turned down the Queen's offer.
Had his musings of wishing to be "perfect" while still training within the Academy stuck with Rennala somehow? Or was it simply something she offered everyone in her now ever-dreary state?
Dei hummed at the doll's final question.
"Ah...Mine journey, mine ambitions," the Tarnished trailed off, "They art endless; I wouldst do anything I must to claim the Elden Throne. I know throngs-worth of competing Tarnished have resigned, fallen, once more losing their sight of Grace..."
"But I shant allow such a fate to befall mineself," Dei grinned proudly, "To the ends of this world shall I reach, if I must, to obtain the future I seek. I pursue stability, happiness reborn anew," he mused, "I feel I must mend these fractured lands I once happily called 'home.'"
"And though I follow such a fickle God's order, I also, above all, fear it," he glanced away momentarily, "Dost thou understandeth...?"
The Tarnished was still taken aback by the Witch's disclosure of her trifles with Death. Yet, he remained calm at the mention of the aspect he grew to fear on his journey—Destined Death, enveloped in the cool chill of the moonlight and fog.
Dei knew much time had passed since his first, of now many, death. He knew he should let go of the past. Yet, he also sought, more than anything, to mend the Lands Between back to the era of peace he once existed within. His past was his fuel to carry onward.
He gazed upon Ranni with a hint of remorse, knowing well that she was no more the Carian Princess of a bygone era. But like all else on his journey, he would learn to accept it—wholly acknowledging her newfound identity of Ranni the Witch.
With so much change, there was no denying a new age was on the rise, fast approaching. Dei could only hope he would be the one to welcome it.
He spoke so much - and so strangely. It seemed he longed for days of a forgotten past. But most Tarnished did, coming from beyond the fog and the forgotten to seek out a time when they were happier. Ranni's lone gaze narrowed in intrigue, letting him prattle on and on as slender hands of lower arms folded together neatly on her lap.
" Mine kin...I have sensed their demise, but I had not thought it to be the hand of a Tarnished until my right-hand blade spoke of thee. " The small witch spoke softly, her voice like the gentle ring of a tuned bell. " Blaidd spoke of thou and thy bravery. Never had he seen such a sight before... "
There was a pause at the mention of her mother, Ranni still sensitive all these years for the one woman who carried her as a child. A sweet, gentle Queen now reduced to the mad ramblings of a demi-god. " I shall put up another spell when I have time... Thou cannot phantom the power it takes a doll to cast such an illusion. "
" As for death...I wished to bring it to my people, for the rot of the world was too much for their minds. Madness had settled for those weaker as I had death stolen... " With her thievery came the isolation, for if her plan was to succeed, the witch needed a new birth.
" Thou may not understand mine ambitions. I have seen these lands when they were ripe and anew, teeming with life and death. Can thee admit death brings more sorrow than the suffering of the undead now? I cannot see it as such - for attuned to this body of porcelain, one can hear the suffering cries of every soul that steeps in rot. "
Ranni lifted her head - that piercing pale stare once more digging into his very being. The witch had no intentions to speak more on it - for he would be the demise of years of work. Tarnished that seek the throne, she would not allow it unless they bent the knee to her. To realize that these lands were decayed to the roots meant they would look to the stars.
" Thou may hope to never cross paths with Witch Ranni once more if thou seeks the throne. "
"I know little of the personal flux for Mortal death," comes he, none irreverently borne nor flaunting that inhuman breathing; he goes with the clicking of excited ankles to reach and to place soft, eager palm to that thrumming quartz, and to crouch at the bottom of those long stalks to find a loosened, new piece for plucking.
At this bedrock for avian leverage dost Roland now smell the heaping cloud of this very soil; a great wreathe of scarlet, of iron'd ingenuity and the vision of a rotting back tooth, with the gums all haphazard and willing to be fretfully soft.
He makes a face, fantastically worried and so disgusted by this new, unfamiliar scent. "For how long hast this rot borne onto the very ground with the white worms?" inquires he, crouch'd as a hermit with his elbows to his knees; look'd up to that blue-and-white doll and staring upon her as if were they Equals. His eyebrows rise for this want of amiable conversation.
"... hath I given thee a boon for introductions?" then says Roland, suddenly.
Calculating gaze followed the traveler as he attuned to the glintstone - hiding her faint smile from beneath the shadow of her hat. " Death hath been taken from these lands long ago. The suffering of man has given birth to many rots that decimate these lands. Undead forever suffer. " She explained softly, having already warned him.
" Every plant and soul hath become tainted under the rule of a foolish woman. " Even the very thought of the missing god could shoot cold fire through the doll. Ranni met his stare with her own, forthcoming with her welcome this time.
" I am Witch Ranni, Lunar Princess, and Daughter of the High Moon Rennala. I shall once again offer thee welcome into these lands - but once more shall I warn thee. Thy soul will wander these lands if tainted with decay. "
Her voice was cool like the brisk night air. Pleasant in its own way, but given his luck with the women he’s known his entire life: this doll was not to be trifled with. She carried herself with a certain dignity, and Jarrod found himself--or rather the two Greater Runes in his possession-- resonating with this one’s presence. “Aye,” he spoke. “Though, I ain’t one much fer it.”
Then it hit him as he recalled the day he stormed Raya Lucaria to obtain a Rune that would give him a chance to save his wife--or so he thought, at the time.
Upon my name as Ranni the Witch. Mother's rich slumber shall not be disturbed by thee.
He slowly dismounted his horse and looked towards the short, pale blue doll, garbed in a witch’s clothes.
“Yer Ranni... ain’cha?”
Thankfully, her mother was still alive. The rune had come from the amber Rennala had cradled, and not the Carian Queen herself. And her brother... it was not he who felled the Starscourge, but his Rune had been passed onto him as well.
Lone eye narrowed in curiosity as his lips called out her true name. The closer the Tarnished came - the unmistakable presence of the runes had her pause. One was from mother and she knew it to be true that her spell had been triggered.
" Are thou the soul who disturbed mine mother's rest? " Mused the pale witch - her gaze unnerving under the glow of the moonlight. " I know her to be safe - as said by my right hand, Blaidd. " The half-wolf had informed her the mother matron resisted in her room, caressing the amber egg Ranni knew to never hatch. " But why hath thou taken the rune from her amber obsession? "
fellmoondoll:
The tepid anger of the Lunar Princes had dissipated slightly, feeling no need to get riled up at her older brother. Instead, the young woman pressed scarlet lips into a thin line - letting her expression tell him she wasn’t amused at his recent comings and goings.
" I can ask him myself. “ She mused, they both knowing full well Radahn would happily do what his younger sister would ask of him. Her shoulders fell slightly, an almost defeated look fluttering over her visage, at the mention of their mother once more.
” She seems to lose herself more each day - ever since that man left her to rot. “ Ranni scoffed, placing her hands on her hips as she regarded her brother once more. ” If you love our mother, you need to be here for her, Rykard. Though it is heartbreaking to see her in such a state, our Mother cannot stand to lose any of us. “ The murmured ramblings of her mother had drawn the young princess to that conclusion.
"Mother has no consort. Mother needs no consort." Almost volcanic rage shone dangerously behind the young man's sharp, sunken eyes, sheer venomous contempt unbefitting one of his age. Something their Queen Mother never approved of, but in her current state, Rykard's flares of violent streak only worsened. The sad excuse of a man, their devout lapdog of a father who sits even now on the Elden Throne... needs to pay. It was power their house solely lacked, Rykard concluded long ago at that fateful night, when the Order reclaimed Radagon at a moment's notice, utterly breaking both Caria's honor and the Queen's heart. But he made no other visble move. Not for Ranni, never for Ranni. "I would leave her to no one else, Ranni. Be rest assured. But we both know mere sorrow was not what fueled mother's dementia and hallucinations. So out there I was, seeking answers in the darker corners of knowledge the Golden Order would not trend..." Letting out a sigh, he took off the heavy cloak he was wearing, and let his unkept hair from days of tireless work flow downwards freely. "But there're other news I must share with you, Ranni. My contacts in Leyndell reported they've proclaimed us demigods; emissary is on the way. Me and Radahn, along with your rightful Empyrean title - whatever that does under our Eternal Divine Majesty." The last words a hiss through gritted teeth.
@fellmoondoll
" Sorrow or madness - I am unsure of what to refer to her condition as. " Ranni spoke bluntly, watching as anger fell and rose in her brother - knowing he was partaking in unsavory things in the dark. Her dark, scarlet hues narrowed with suspicion - deciding to let it go instead. Younger sister reached out, gently taking the sleeve of her brother in hand. " Thy know Mother would not want thee dabbling in those things, Rykard. " She scolded him, shaking her head.
Pale lips pursed in annoyance at the mention of the Divine Majesty - holding herself to not roll her eyes. " Demigods... What lunacy are they spouting? " She murmured under her breath, the princess shifting her gaze back to her brother. " Blaidd has just arrived as well... He will not be happy with such news. "
There was another pause before Ranni continued once more. " Blaidd says thou hath encouraged dangerous means to forward thy path, dear brother. " She mused. " Thou knows Mother would be ashamed of darkened magics. "
@fellmoondoll -- ;
To explore the farthest reaches of Liurnia often meant delving deeply into risk, and Sypha was no stranger to it. Through the thick shrouds of fog and mists that seemed to shed from the equally bleak sky, the drake that guarded the forlorn, haunted castle resulting in a fierce, contentious battle. Victory was within reach until, with a mighty beating of its wings, the drake soared into the air with a deafening roar until it disappeared from sight. Racing over the flagstones, Sypha darted into the castle past the portcullis, exhaling a sigh of relief.
This place seemed abandoned, as many within the world were. For now, it was serviceable as a place of respite for the night.
Pale blue hues fluttered upon - awoken from peaceful slumber upon the arrival of a stranger in her Rise. The doll sat quietly, letting the soft, echoing footsteps make their way through the stone halls - past the scattered books and glintstones - until they reached the entrance to the highest point of the tower. The room was decorated lavishly, though sparse, with books and stargazing telescopes.
Amongst all of it sat the pale doll, upon a perch of stacked books. From under that wide-brimmed hat, Ranni looked on in curiosity before speaking. " Greetings, traveler... " Came the soft musings of the witch - a melodic tune. " Thou steps upon the stones of Witch Ranni's Rise. "
The Second Prince of Caria was a rebellious one. That's a fact known throughout Caria Manor, and none save the tranquil fury of Queen Rennala could keep the boy in line - many had tried, and many had failed.
Now, it seems the Queen's miniature version in all but hair color had managed the impossible.
"Down the dungeon, testing out- never mind. Shall we keep that between you and me, little sister? I'll send Radahn to crack some prawns for you." The young Prince managed a tight smile at the thunderous expression of his little sister; but Ranni would be far too shrewd to fall prey to mere bribery, that he knew.
"How is mother doing today, anyways? With or without me, I sense she grows weary by the day." Their Queen Mother was deteriorating slowly but truly, both body and soul. There's something more than mere sickness at play, he was certain of it, yet Rykard could not pinpoint the cause. It was infuriating, and he hated being left in the dark.
@fellmoondoll

"Thus is Poetically heinous," announces he, his eyebrows risen high but, still, blinded by blue Beauty.
"Prithee, and come from the belly of innocent Query: wilt thou be too offended if shouldst I reach to touch, and to grasp one of thy surrounding crystals within the palm of my hand?" asks he, and comes again to purvey each Word. "Which of 'insanity' dost thou define? Dost thou mean the primitive tug at that middl'ng brainstem to confer to ape-like attributes?
"Or dost thou mean a soft, slow insanity to look, open-mouthed, to the Stars, to spend each waking Moment of Understanding that which is forever meant to be incomprehensible? A rot is borne for many Goods things for the growth of a proper ecosystem," refutes he, as Roland is riddled with fantastic images of What Could Be and Who Could Say. "Is thus referred to a decomposition of the spirit by means of excising? To erase Complete?"
He was truly a patron of the arts - and of madness. For who would stand and speak such words upon hearing the warnings of the doll witch. " Thou may grasp the crystal in thy hands - for it will do thee no harm. " That cold, glowing eye narrowed as he continued to speak. A curious one he was, one such curiosity Ranni did not admire.
" I hath spoken the warnings for thy journey ahead but thou still stands. " She murmured. " Death doth not live in these Lands no longer - for only a piece of it was stolen. Now those who perish amongst the undead that rise here will be damned - to the madness of life. For the mortal body to be ripped from the soul, thou shall see firsthand on thy journey what such a thing does to its people."
fellmoondoll:
" Silence and sleep - solace and warmth… Thou will not find these readily upon pledging thy name to Rannit the Witch, for trust must be given. “ There was no sympathy expressed through porcelain, no pitiful glance - Ranni valued loyalties high above all.
” My goal is to bring the age of the stars, the rise of the darkened moon…a tedious task not meant for those who merely seek the company of a past lover. “ Fragile fingertips tapped lightly against her clothed thigh, pondering - if not a moment more - what the Tarnished could do in such a state.
” Prove thy is worthy to stand before me if thou wishes for mine aid. “
Of course a catch.
No sense of help for this man, always the errand boy and always the blind fool.
...fuck it.
Belmont knows that some goals and endgames people have out weigh his and maybe they were right, but he knows these people are to cowardly or to dead to do it themselves. He wasn’t use to this fact. Forcing his legs to cooperate, pushing himself onto his feet and openly before the maiden, he retune the blade to his side, the actually blade part pointing away from the witch.
“I’ve been through tedious task just to find her...I have and still scowler this place to find her, working for someone else’s goals or “my own.”
" I can give the word upon the name of Witch Ranni that mine resources will be yours to take upon thy journey. " She spoke true - the thought of one in particular in her court would be perfect for the job. " 'Tis simple task if thou are willing... "
" Climb to the top of the Divine Tower of Liurnia and retrieve the runic mark upon the body there. " She advised, lifting her chin so her glowing eye was peering directly at his visage - her stare almost as if she were searching his soul. " Upon bringing it to me, I shall assist thee in finding thy lost one. "
AS SAID BY VARRIC TETHRAS * assorted dialogue from dragon age: inquisition
who designs a place that takes this many keys to get inside?
look at all the shit that's happened to you.
this shit is ruining my boots.
you've got to be kidding me.
i really am in the ass-end of nowhere now.
i'll take your word for it.
have we reached the stage where we gossip about each other's love lives?
we'll talk later.
nothing's stopping us from going back up.
one of those things would be impossible. all of them together? that's a miracle.
there was nothing simple about it.
you think we could take a couple of these books back with us?
my guess is another earthquake... that hits when we're halfway across the bridge.
i've had to write some letters.
no tantalizing secrets to divulge?
considering the company, i'm surprised it didn't feel longer.
does anybody else smell that? seriously? just me?
we're done here, right?
just take care of yourself.
i tried to warn you.
so it was just you, alone in the vast wilderness?
so we're getting the band back together? that's exciting.
let's try not to poke around someone else's grave, all right?
that had to hurt!
are you blushing?
let's not talk about it.
something about this place gives me the creeps.
i have no idea why places like this exist.
are we sure this is a good idea?
just because two people dislike each other doesn't mean they're about to kiss.
let's talk about your dark and troubled past.
i can almost promise you trouble when you arrive.
great place to get crapped on by a bird.
sounds like you two would have made a happy couple.
well, that screams "up to no good."
that's the seventh root i've tripped over in the last ten minutes.
i'm providing a service.
back me up!
how about dalliances? liaisons? illicit affairs?
you don't want to talk about yourself. i can respect that. so what do we talk about, then?
i'd also like to avoid falling.
i could help, you know.
i make up for it elsewhere.
are you going to blame me for that, too?
well, no one would peg you as a spy.
what? no! why would you even ask that?
let's try not to get eaten, shall we?
good spot for it. i wouldn't look here for anything.
my money's on this being a trap.
i'll keep that in mind.
maybe the locals will lend us a boat.
some things never change.
too attached to hitting things with your fists?
well, you've got to give me something.
personally i think it's some kind of compensation thing.
anybody else vote that we never come here again?
all this fresh air is making me lightheaded.
you remind me of someone.
are you all right?
i got to ask, does any of this shit make sense to you?
i'm not sure what that even means.
of course i'm concerned! i don't need you prodding me with a stick to prove it.
i hate caves.
thank you for not torturing me. i'm so much happier now.
we'll have to find another way.
how do you like being described?
poor bastards.
be still my heart. i've grown on you.
whatever it does, it's probably ancient and invaluable.
so what do we expect to find here?
you're asking me?
i'm hoping if i ignore it, it'll go away.
there's a lot of work to do.
just what we needed.
i didn't specify whose ass, did i?
you want to get shit done, right?
have you been reading the inscriptions?
it's just... all that niceness.
the only thing they seem to have in common is a tendency to burn things.
so there's a rational explanation after all.
well... that's gruesome.
where's the sneaking? the plotting? the subtle machinations?
most people are like cats. they either puff up to look dangerous or they crouch down and hope you don't see them.
it generally helps to respect local traditions now and then.
i've heard some people actually enjoy walking in the wilderness.
anyone know the name of this river?
someone remembered to bring water, right?
it's... hard to explain.
if they're busy staring at your hat, they're ignoring all your other flaws.
beg your pardon? i didn't catch that.
hm... i don't want to bore people.
how could you possibly be a spy?
ooh, that's a tough one.
look, i have to complain, or you'll forget i'm even here and trip over me!
how are you holding up? you've been quiet for a while.
i don't know what you're complaining about. you're taller than i am.
if you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. maybe even throw in a heroic death.
you doing all right? i heard you breathing a little hard after the last fight.
no, no... that was good.
i will try my best not to do the impossible.
no argument there.
you seem the type.
you think i get any fun hanging out with them?
well, what you do doesn't make sense.
it seems like you're not having the effect you could.
keep acting like a big shot and hope it sticks.
