me watching monsters inc as a kid: how did it take so long for anyone to figure out that human child laughter not only produced energy like screams, but was more effective, and that children aren’t actually dangerous at all?
me watching monsters inc now: monsters incorporated, a multi-billion dollar corporate giant, stood to make extra profits off a scream shortage because low supply with high demand makes it possible to charge a fortune for a necessary commodity and everyone has no choice but to pay the high prices because they can’t go without electricity. Therefore Monsters Inc, as well as any other major powers that may have existed at the start of the era of using scream energy, fabricated the idea that only screams could generate sustainable energy sources in order to create artificial scarcity, because laugh energy was far easier to obtain and far more efficient, and therefore stood to lower the value of energy due to surplus. They also fabricated the idea that human children were toxic, in order to a) make other monsters too afraid to go near them to do research and possibly discover the secret of laugh energy, and b) to make monsters so afraid of going near them that there is a shortage of scarers, making it harder for rival companies to rise up and create competition. Even in the monster world, capitalism is based on lies, greed and cruelty, and even monster companies have no qualms about using and abusing children to maximize profits.
As Susan B. Anthony’s name trends on Twitter — and as people blanket her Rochester, New York, grave in “I Voted” stickers — it’s worth remembering that Anthony’s legacy is a paragon of white feminism. Anthony’s pursuit of women’s rights came with a hefty dose of racism. On its website, the National Women’s History Museum is careful to emphasize that Anthony’s problem wasn’t with black men voting, per se.

Happy oscars day here’s some history about asians at the academy awards:
No asian producers have ever won best picture (although six have been nominated)
Ben Kingsley is the only asian to ever be nominated for or win best actor
No asian woman has ever won best actress, and the only time an asian woman has ever been nominated (Merle Oberon in The Dark Angel) was almost a century ago
Out of seven nominated over the years, only one asian has ever won best supporting actor (Haing S. Ngor for The Killing Fields in 1984)
In 1957, Miyoshi Umeki became the first asian woman to win best supporting actress for her role in Sayonara. No asian woman has won since then, although four have been nominated.
Ang Lee was the first (and so far only) asian person to win best director, and he’s done it twice. Once in 2005 for Brokeback Mountain, and again in 2012 for Life of Pi.
No asian has ever won best adapted screenplay, and only two have ever been nominated (Wang Hui-ling and Tsai Kuo Jung for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000).
An asian has never won best original screenplay, but that could change tonight since Kumail Nanjiani is nominated (with Emily V. Gordon) for The Big Sick. He is also the only asian nominated in a major category at this year’s oscars.
I don’t have a profound note to end this on. All I can say is that the system is broken from the ground up. The problem isn’t really that asians aren’t being recognized for the work they do in western media. The problem is that asians generally aren’t being given the chance to do that work in the first place.

I actually looked up the author, Becky Albertalli, a while back when I was first getting hyped for Love, Simon, and from what I found (and please let me know if I’m wrong, this info is coming from a few quick google searches) she hasn’t just created multiple, well-written LGBTQ characters, she also worked for years with LGBTQ teens and support groups, particularly for gender nonconforming kids. If that doesn’t tell you how far this woman is willing to go to aid LGBTQ folk, I don’t know what will.
YEP. She addresses this in the very end of Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda in her acknowledgements - she wrote the book with the help of a multitude of LGBTQ teenagers. She wrote what she knew from experience, but for the things she did not have experience with, she sought the wisdom of the people she was writing the book for. She is a genuinely awesome ally.
Not to hurt anyone’s feelings but legalization of marijuana means NOTHING if it doesn’t come with the release of the millions of black and brown people, who have been in prison for DECADES because of it.

Feminist art and activism too often center only the experiences and perspectives of white, cisgender women. Not only does this exclusion harm individuals whose identities do not fall into those neat categories, but it also harms white, cisgender women themselves. It is crucial for us to challenge this exclusivity in feminism by celebrating artists who are not cis white women, like Alok (they/them) Vaid-Menon. Alok, who often goes by simply their first name, is a poet, blogger, performer and community organizer whose work challenges white feminism’s notions about identity and activism. Their work explores their personal identity as a gender non-conforming Indian individual as well as sociopolitical analysis and commentary.

Hi. Don’t forget about Chechnya. This LGBT concentration camp has been open since early 2017, maybe even earlier than that, and the UN has yet to acknowledge its existence. Hundreds of Russians in the LGBT community have died since the existence of this camp surfaced in news headlines in March/April. Educate yourselves. Figure out what you can do to help.

The purpose of a union is to serve its members, by fighting and securing necessities such as job security, wage benefits, affordable healthcare, pensions, vacation and sick days. These are much less seen in employment nowadays. The paid dues are a logical part of the necessary capital that is required for the union to actively pursue these goals, and be successful — which they are. All this labor is being done in workers’ benefits, even if they are a non-member. Unions are crucial in minimizing wage gaps, which particularly affect women of color, who may be hurt the most if Janus succeeds. Unions provide minorities the representation that is sorely lacking in cases of discrimination and worker rights.
