Adding my two cents to the 'Elphaba wasn't convinced with the whole looking at things another way' confession ' ,I think at the time , though Elphaba had mostly grown into her powers as a witch and was really a go getter in her mission against the Wizard and his propoganda, Elphaba, as a person , is still insecure in her identity ,and I use insecure loosely, more like conflicted about her identity (appearance), having been ridiculed for her skin colour her whole life , now having all those same attributes and her whole existence as a curse thrown right in front of her eyes ,the posters of 'Wicked Witch ', that she forces herself to look at daily, to remind herself that THIS is who the world thinks she is, that her attempts to do good have made her into this ugly , monstrous version that people run away from, This is her current reality, her existence is reduced to this literal villain who has to shroud herself away from the place she calls 'home' , and the people who she considers her own . What's even worse is the people close to her themselves have fallen prey to the propaganda and are actively taking part in it, and it's significant to note that she's shocked when she finds Fiyero, of all people, attempting to track her down , she is heartbroken that HE's part of this vicious circle of the Wizard too ,the despair in her voice is clear in her disbelief when she says to herself ' even you Fiyero ' , like no matter whoever else decides to partake in the witch hunt against her, she finds Fiyero's participation the most painful , because she knows that he's one of the few people who'd ever really seen past her exterior,the one who she'd had a deep emotional connection with, one that she thought to have been reciprocated ( I think about that day a lot...so do I) and the poppy he'd given her the last time they saw each other, that she keeps to this day, serves as a fresh reminder of those beautiful days when she'd allowed herself to dream , wish , and maybe think she could have it only for reality to step in and show her that wishing indeed does wound the heart and she doesn't deserve anything but scorn and loneliness.While she has embraced her cause with full arms ,she certainly hasn't grown enough to find herself beautiful and the world around her isn't helping.
She's proven wrong when Fiyero decides to turn on the wizard and run away with her, helping her escape , and some of her convictions prove true ( "For a while there i thought you changed", only he hasn't changed, he's still the same Fiyero who gave her the poppy. ) and I'm guessing that puts her mind at ease, that yes he does see her and knows her enough to say fuck you to the phony wizard and the fact that HE CHOOSES to go with her , plays an important role in reinforcing her trust in him well enough that she lets him into her home , and allows him to take off her cape , peeling off the external layer of herself, making herself vulnerable, letting him see beyond the outward persona . Then comes ALAYM , where he sees what she's been through, what she's living with and he tells her she's beautiful, and naturally, her walls are up, this is a person who's been demonised for years and forces herself to look at the reminders of her alleged villainy( th wicked witch posters that she looks at regularly ) , so obviously,she believes he's lying to make her feel better ,to spare her feelings, but Fiyero, bless him, has always found her beautiful and now he's in awe of her strength and courage in the face of such great adversity ,kneels in front of her and tells her he isn't lying and just looking at things another way... Now... is Elphaba convinced , or more accurately, can years of insecurity and conflict be undone by a single confession, I don't know..but something in her loosens up after his statement, you can feel some of the weight has been lifted from her with the way she flashes him this brilliant cute smile/giggle. Thereafter, she becomes playful, making him chase her , teasing him , going as far as to 'defy gravity' together with him, and finally allows him to undress her and they kiss , and that she feels comfortable enough to kiss him and have sex with him itself is a testament to the trust she places in him. He leaves no room for doubt when he says they're always gonna be together. I believe that she values his confession and takes it to heart.A fact, which later comes to light when she confronts Glinda in Munchkinland ,after Nessa's death. She believes him enough to tell Glinda right in the face, that he was never Glinda's to begin with, that Glinda was living out a fantasy and that he never loved Glinda..and moreover she tells Glinda..' he loves me ', the utter conviction and there's absolutely no doubt in her mind that does in fact ,love her.Her conviction comes not just the statement that he finds her beautiful, it's from him choosing her over the world, him pulling her close when the whole world shunned her , it's him making her laugh , it's all the small acts of affection , it's all the times he's showed up for her that make her believe , that yes she is indeed that girl. And regarding the beautiful line,' all I wanna say is she believed them enough to say it back to him when their roles were reversed and when she was looking up at the sad brown eyes of her scarecrow. So yes , the conventionally ' ugly ' people found love and beauty within each other and had their very own happy ending .Thank Goodness!!
