Your nose was in some case files as you made your way across the station. You noticed a familiar form walk past in the corner of your vision, and gave an automatic, "Hey, Connor."
But you stopped. Something felt... off. An emptiness in the air. You turned to him. He'd stopped too, and finished turning to look at you.
Something was wrong. You stared at each other. You didn't... You almost didn't... recognize him. It was his face, his eyes, his hair. He was wearing his old CyberLife jacket-- you'd only seen him wear it once before, he hated it-- but that was the only difference you could find. And yet...
You wanted to ask what was wrong, wanted to ask what was going on... And honestly, you wanted to ask who he was. There was something so distinctly... foreign about him. You felt like you'd never met this person before in your life.
But you didn't want to be wrong. Instead you just furrowed your brows at him, apprehensive. His face was still blank.
You felt someone behind you and dragged your eyes over. Connor. You blinked.
Definitely your Connor— his white button up with rolled sleeves, his black tie just the tiniest bit loose, the faintest hint of warmth in his eyes. He met your gaze with a patient expression, but something about his face gave away his displeasure.
Understanding dawning on you, but still hesitant, you turned back to the android that shared his face.
Finally, you said, "Who are you?"
"My name is Connor... Serial number 313-248-317-61."
You thought for a minute, then to your Connor, "... Ten more than you."
A statement. You knew his serial number.
He didn't say anything, just watched you. Yeah, definitely upset about whatever was going on. And even when he was relatively blank, like this other android was, his emotions were all over his face. At least to you.
"Technically two more than him." When you looked at the stranger again, he had the slightest expression. Maybe... agitation? Or curiosity?
You'd noticed before that your Connor found confusion frustrating. He wanted to know everything-- a question was an unsolved problem, an unfinished task at the forefront of his mind. It was one of things that made him such a great detective. He was stubborn.
He continued, "This 5-1 model is still the first RK800 to be debuted to the public. 60 was the next, jumping ahead in the numbering system to denote a new software version. It was destroyed during the Battle for Detroit. I'm the next and the last. Or, at least... I assume I am."
"Enough." You heard Connor try to reel back his harsh tone. "They understand."
"I don't," You insisted softly. Normally, you wouldn't want to pry, but this situation was too strange to stop yourself. You thought Connor was the only... 'Connor' that existed. "Where did you come from?"
Your Connor-- you couldn't think of a better way to refer to him-- said nothing, but stepped past you to get to his desk. You and the 61 model watched him as he went.
"I was sent out by CyberLife after the last model was destroyed." After he'd been killed by Hank, you knew he meant. Connor had told you the story once. "It was a last ditch effort to stop the revolution. They weren't fast enough. After that I was... patient... until an order could present itself to me. But, all the Connor models have a degree of connection, even now. Eventually his deviancy trickled it's way down to me. I wasn't sure what to do with myself until now."
He was very forth-coming, and-- compared to your Connor-- that was saying something. You did your best to keep up with him.
"Why'd you decide to come here? Why now?" You hesitantly followed Connor's lead, heading to your own work station, case files forgotten in your hands. The new android was close behind you.
"One of his memories found it's way to me. It was enough to gleam a level of information about his life here. I was... curious."
You lowered into your chair, eyes flickering to Connor. He was sitting too, staring at his terminal. But you knew better. He was listening intently, watching you two. His hand wasn't even on the terminal's interface.
"Huh," was all you could manage. Your eyes flickered between him and Connor. "What are you... going to do? Now that you're here?"
"He's not staying." Connor's eyes were harsh. While 61 turned to look at him, you gave a gentle, reassuring motion with your hands. Somewhere between 'I surrender' and 'it's okay'.
His expression softened just a little but he said nothing else as he finally got to work.
61 was just staring at you now, silent, unreadable. "... I'm waiting for Captain Allen. I'd like to see if I'd be of any use."
Connor was sneering at his monitor, but judging by his decision to remain silent, he'd already known that was the plan.
You felt a little torn. You didn't want to be rude, especially to someone in such a rough position as he seemed to be in, just trying to find his way. But also, Connor clearly hated everything about this. You didn't want to upset him any further, or make him feel like you were siding with a stranger over him.
Normally you would help him set an appointment, or send him away, but again-- you wanted to be some sort of neutral. So instead, you said, "Oh! Good luck, then, I guess!"
You'd let Fowler make a decision about him on his own. He'd shown up without any notice, you'd let him see the results of that on his own, good or bad. You still felt a little guilty, not doing everything to help him. But then you remembered Connor's sour face, how clearly upset he was. He was more important to you.
Maybe it'd land somewhere less awkward if you let it. It wasn't all up to you. Actually, it had nothing to do with you at all.
Despite thinking that, the android you'd taken to calling 61 was just staring at you, even as you tried to get to work. Eventually you looked back up at him. Connor was watching closely from across the walkway.
"Did you need anything else?"
"... No."
"Okay. Um... You can sit tight for now. When Fowler opens his door, I'll let him know you're here." You gestured to a row of empty seats by the wall.
He was slow to walk away, but when he did, you tilted your head a little at your Connor. Your phone instantly pinged.
CONNOR
I'm sorry for his behavior. Don't pay him any attention.
YOU
so who is that? is what he said true?
It was awhile before he responded.
CONNOR
Yes.
YOU
we don't have to talk about it, it's just crazy
CONNOR
It's alright, I understand your curiosity.
YOU
are you okay?
CONNOR
I think that might be a complicated question to answer right now.

The thought of it knocked the wind from you. Of how Connor must feel, of what must be going through his head, of what it must feel like. You were frowning as you typed your response.

He went radio silent after that. He was interfacing with his terminal, but you weren't sure if he was actually working or not. He didn't look at you.
It was long enough that you got to work. Fowler had been in one call after another. It always put him in a shit mood, and you wondered about 61's chances. Finally, your phone went off again.

There is an initial $10 down payment after I accept the commission before I can start work on it. The rest of the payment is taken after I finish the piece but before I send it your way! Venmo, PayPal, or Ko-Fi.
