Please, for the love of god, please don’t be this person. No matter how long it’s been since an update, no matter how many unfinished stories are sitting on their account, no matter what - do not be this person.

Not only is it insanely rude, but you also do more damage than you think be being such a self-entitled ass about something someone created for free and for fun. “This author” can see what you say.

I was literally about to post a chapter once and got a snide comment similar to this - not addressing other readers, just me - and decided to keep the rest of the story to myself. It's still there. I could post it anytime. But I'm not going to.

I also got a glowing compliment on a fic and went into a flurry of writing, suddenly inspired, then by happenstance got a nasty, impatient comment on that same fic a few days and moved onto writing a different fic that didn't have that associated annoyance.

Like. I am writing for fun. For me. I reread and enjoy my fics all the time because they're exactly the story I want to read. I get the same enjoyment out of a fic wither or not anyone else ever sees it or knows it exists.

I'm sharing it for fun too.

I once got a comment on a fic that just read RIP with my username. It's really fucking demotivating. Maybe the work will end up abandoned, maybe it won't, but don't fucking leave this sort of shit on a fic. It's more likely to prevent any future updates than encourage them. Authors are not vending machines. You can not shake us and force the story out (believe us, many of us have tried doing this to ourselves because we want to finish the story but sometimes life and other shit gets in the way).

This is not new behavior. I wrote a fic in 2002 when I was a bitty teenager and had some teenager stuff that interfered with updates. Well, a reader got pissed and wrote a fic to continue my fic. In the author notes they bashed me for abandoning my fic. Guess what? I was so upset I never wrote another word for that fic even though I'd spent years on it. To this day it sit unfinished on fanfiction dot net.

Definitely not new behavior. The comment I mentioned was on a fic posted on fanfiction.net and last updated in 2010. I did end up abandoning the fic (the comment was only a drop in the bucket of reasons that culminated and led to the abandonment of the work) and it took me close to a decade to return to writing fanfic.

The thing is most authors I know try so hard to focus only on the positive reviews and such, but negative and hurtful comments linger in people's psyche for a long time and are hard to expunge. The childhood rhyme about words not hurting is, quite honestly, bullshit. Words can do quite a bit of damage.

I'm a lot more comfortable deleting comments and blocking users now (at least on the sites that allow that), but even with those tools it can be hard to let go of the really hurtful comments.

I'm sorry to all the others who have dealt with this sort of bullshit. May we all find our creativity despite the harms we've encountered. May we find the strength to keep going and the spite to say fuck you to the assholes of the universe.

And may all of us who participate in fandom practice a little more kindness, even if the kindness is just keeping our mouths shut because we can't think of anything nice to say.
