no matter how normalised it gets I will die on the hill that it is rude to record strangers in public without their consent
reblog to do this to the person you reblogged this from
I actually was looking for "sheets.google.com", but nice try.
As much as I think it would be fun to have emotive anthropomorphic ears, I also recognize I can barely control my facial expressions. Like hell can I keep from Angry Ears-ing during meetings
This is who you’re having a meeting with, by the way.
The normalization of the surveillance state has gotten absolutely out of hand. My coworker's boyfriend went out drinking with a friend last night and didn't come home so my coworker was understandably a bit worried. But then after he was found alive and hungover in a friends bathtub, I had to listen to my coworkers talking about all the ways to keep tabs on the guy. Airtag his wallet. Location sharing his phone at all times. Everyone is nodding along offering suggestions like slipping airtags under his shoe insole or buying him an apple watch.
And it just devolved further into all the ways they're gonna monitor their kids when they become teenagers and keep track of where they are at all times. And like jesus fucking christ. I get being worried when you can't get ahold of someone that's not where they're supposed to be but also we need to calm the fuck down.
How are people supposed to exist when the person they're dating can monitor every time they take a different route home from work? How are kids supposed to become independent people when their parents can see every time they sneak to the convenience store during study hall?
Somehow in the last like 15 years we've slipped from serious debates on if security cameras in high schools was a violation of student privacy and if gps monitoring your kids car was overprotective parenting, to a presumption that everyone should have a security camera on their front door, their location shared at all times, and their kids microchipped.
Want to know why everyone these days has anxiety? Because it's near impossible to exist without someone watching.

How is it that you can a music library of like 1,200+ absolute bangers but as soon as you put it on shuffle in a group setting it's like. anime opening you added in 2010. homestuck parody song. musical artist who was cancelled last year for kidnapping and eating children in his basement. Hamilton
I can't believe some people are actually reblogging this like "Tch. Omg, so embarrassing OP, I can't believe you would ever admit to liking Hamilton 😏 " like ok, first of all congratulations for hatching as a fully formed adult in 2022 from the pure white egg of a virgin swan i guess. Raised in a cave on a diet consisting solely of nuts and berries and leftist twitter clapbacks. "ooooooh, I've never had a complicated relationship with a piece of art that was phenomenally well-received at the time but aged like milk as later reflection revealed the fundamental flaws in its premise that were in fact present from its inception but which I didn't notice because I was 17 and hadn't heard of neoliberalism yet" Should we throw a party? Should we invite Anthony Fantano? Anyway second of all. you draw the line at Lin Manuel Miranda but you're fine with basement guy?
In a fascinating turn of events, my Most Pragmatic Sibling, reader of exclusively nonfiction, interested only in historical northeastern politics, fish recipes, and his dog, who in his bid to "opt out of frivolous nonsense" has worn only the same 3 pairs of identical cargo shorts and 5 free promotional tee-shirts for the last nine years, has recently come to understand that fashion, trends, and fads, are- as difficult as it is to grasp- direct expressions of a given population's political and socioeconomic environment
I, local family's resident literature fine arts and weird dead animals dork, have been having ENDLESS fun at his expense on this
(We both enjoy writing)
We have, since this monumental epiphany, essentially had the same conversation nine times in a row now, and I am genuinely never going to get sick of it. I hope he keeps texting me questions forever
Him: Wait but THIS stupid ugly thing was super impractical, so how come everybody wanted to wear it all of a sudden
Me: Well I'd have to do some research to be sure but if it didn't have a practical purpose and it wasn't a spiritual thing then my best guess is that it was either a novelty that had suddenly been introduced and found appealing, or it came to represent an important facet of the culture that suddenly gained relevance
Him: So why did it stop
Me: Fashions swing from one extreme to the other. People seek out what is desirable and unique, which is almost always unique because it's not produced or available very much. If enough people jump onto that bandwagon, demand goes up, so whoever can invent a way to get more or make more will make a killing. Once this innovation meets demand, the rhing will become commonplace, and no longer new or exciting. If it happens to be perfectly suited to a particular niche or image then it will become timeless as long as that niche or image is relevant, but the majority will move in the opposite direction once they hit the greatest possible extreme.
Him: That's stupid
Me: War is stupid. Ask grandma why she doesn't throw out old nylons and keeps turning old rags into bath mats
Him: (nodding sagely)
if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you
Actually, no, I don't think that friendships dropping like flies in your late 20s and early 30s because no one has time for that between overwork and family obligations and marriage and kids and partners and the ritual of the time slayer is normal and ok. No I don't think deep conversations and spontaneous adventures being replaced with a tired coffee every six months is a normal part of growing up. I don't think that emotional intimacy and soul bonds disintegrating in the face of practical inconvenience is a fact of life. I think that means something is deeply deeply wrong with our society and I will never forgive it for the friends I've lost
