How did I get so lucky?
I got paired with the perfect partner. I lay in bed thinking about this as I slowly recover from another attack.
The person next to me is asleep now, snoring softly under the heavy quilt. It's a cold winter night and I have a slight cold, which is what brought on this coughing spell.
He made no fuss, just held me through it so I didn't get hurt. Then went to get supplies to get me and the mess cleaned up.
Now I'm laying on his outstretched arm, his forearm tenderly hooked around my neck.
I marvel at the form next to me. Solid frame, strong jawline, slightly crooked nose from being broken in fights. The dusting of hair across his jaw and chest are just begging me to scrape my fingers through. Even down to his long beautiful lashes that shouldn't be, but there they are.
Shunsui gets drawn into a fight and Jushiro gets shoved into the middle of it.
The sound of fist hitting flesh is now seared into Shunsui's brain as he sits in confinement.

Dear diary: The sound
Entry: academy year five.
It's a sound I will never forget, it's seared into my very soul. The sound of flesh against flesh, not in a fun manner.
To explain this I have to go back through the years.
Noble families have branches below the main clan line. Some are extensive, some are unexpected. One of the unexpected would be the Yamamoto clan, yes the same Yamamoto who leads the Gotei-13.
One of the branches of that clan was rotten to the core. Actually a surprising amount of the clans had rotten branches.
This particular branch was just abysmal. One of the worst was a spoiled girl named Rika. She wasn't just spoiled, she was maliciously cruel and fairly stupid. If she had been smart she really could have become some evil genius, but no that wasn't her fate.
I had the displeasure of meeting her when I first started staying with Yama-jii. She purposely tried to play nasty tricks on me. The old man caught her nearly every time. That's when some of the serious stealthy training started.
She didn't pick on me long after that.
I don't know how but she wound up at the academy at the same time. By that time she had a collection of like minded idiots who hung on her every word.
No matter how much trouble she got into her parents would bail her out…typical for nobility.
I just tried my best to steer clear of her and her gaggle of miscreants. Not always successfully, but pretty well. She knew enough to not push me as I push back, hard. I have zero tolerance for bullies, that's a pretty well known fact about me.
My clan specializes in martial arts, so on top of the training I got from the old man, I got trained at home. I'm pretty good at hand to hand combat. I just decline to use it unless I absolutely have to.
Okay so back to the sound that'll stay with me…I'm used to fighting. I've been in a lot of bar fights, I know the sound of fist meeting various body parts.
Rika and her crew were making life hell for a girl from a minor branch of the Kira clan. I couldn't help myself, I had to step in.
Of course there was a crowd, some cheering on Rika's group and a few actually cheering for me. That's when Rika pulled a really foul trick.
Just at that moment Ukitake and some of his friends walked by and that terrible creature pushed him into the middle of the fight.
I was squared up against the biggest thug in her circle, fist cocked back ready to fly. Suddenly Jushiro's gentle but stunned face was right in that trajectory. I pulled my punch as much as I could as it was too late to just stop. The impact was a sickening sound. His eyes grew wide as the reality of what just happened landed. He dropped to the floor.
The bullies scattered…of course they did.
I was half a second behind him on the floor, holding him, apologizing profusely. That's when the guards showed up. They pulled me away and sent someone scampering off to Squad Four and The Captain-commander.
I wasn't jailed exactly, but confined to quarters and suspended from classes. That one bothered me more than I care to admit….and I was separated from Jushiro. That made my heart hurt.
One night of my exile I felt my blankets shift. I have no clue how, but Jushiro was snuggled up behind me, face buried in my back.
I asked so many questions. He was under protective guardianship of the Kuchiki clan, that was good, they were at least honorable. How he had gotten here? Sojun Kuchiki was on guard duty and he was sympathetic. He was mostly okay, just a deep bruise that hurt.
I felt so bad.
I finally rolled over and drew him into my arms. Rika and her group were expelled. That was very good news.
It's a sad fact that a lot of nobles are bullies. They think their power and wealth make them invulnerable. I hate that. Even my own clan can be like that. My dad and older brother are proof. Although my brother has gotten better since getting married.
We spent the better part of two hours just cuddling and talking, then he had to leave.
When I was finally released from my so-called prison I went to the market and bought a cake, a new kimono in the colors he likes and some flowers. I waited in our room for classes to end as I wanted to surprise him.
Much to my surprise he had done the same thing. He even skipped the last two classes of the day to shop. How we didn't bump into each other I'll never know. He's gotten better at being sneaky.
My bad influence has rubbed off on him. I couldn't be prouder.
