This is Doris Pollas, the cofounder of the organisation now known as lgbt+ Denmark which by being founded in 1948 is one of the oldest ongoing queer organisation in the world.
Doris lived in a farm in Jutland as a child. She was always butch and figured out she was a lesbian in her teens. When she heard about a club in copenhagen where boys kissed boys and girls kissed girls she went just some months after and it was through that club she started a paper connecting queer people all up to seventies and co founded lgbt+ Denmark.
She is now 97 years old and wishes for every queer person to have an as loving and accepting family as she did.
I donāt see a lot of older gays from my country, so learning about Doris, a masc lesbian, was really nice.

You know that Mr Rogers thing of ālook for the helpersā? How many times has someone, facing the end, done something tiny and fragile and maybe hopeless just to try and help someone else? Whether it works or not. How many people went to their graves at least trying?
That has to say something about us. As a people. As monstrous as we sometimes (perhaps often) are, so many times we were also ā¦
Whoever saves one life, saves the whole world.
And sometimes you canāt save one life, sometimes it doesnāt work, sometimes thereās no getting out of this for anyone, but ā¦ try anyway. Because it matters anyway.
And maybe no one will ever know. But maybe also some day more than a century down the line, maybe some idiot will be crying into her coffee because of what you died trying.
Sometimes helping isnāt heroic. Itās quiet, ordinary, and unseen. But choosing not to look away ā especially when it would be easier ā is still a form of responsibility.

As December arrives, many people around the world celebrate the end of the year with joy, family, and comfort. But for many queer people across Africa, this month carries a different weight.
December often highlights the deep inequalities we face. While others gather with loved ones, many LGBTQ+ Africans spend this time fighting for safety, shelter, and the right to exist without fear. For those in exile or displaced, December can feel even heavier.
Across the continent, queer communities continue to face:
ā¢ violence and harassment
ā¢ police abuse and arbitrary arrests
ā¢ family rejection and forced displacement
ā¢ denial of education, healthcare, and employment
ā¢ discriminatory laws that make life unsafe
ā¢ stigma that pushes people into hiding during a time when others are celebrating
December is also a month tied to painful memories.
In December 2009, Ugandaās Anti-Homosexuality Bill was introduced, bringing harsh attention to the persecution of LGBTQ+ people in East Africa. Its impact is still felt today by many of us who were forced to flee our homes.
But even with all these challenges, queer Africans continue to resist.
We build chosen families.
We support each other in secret and in the open.
We share our stories.
We hold onto hope, even in the hardest months.
This December, I want to remind my followers that your solidarity matters.
