hey, i'm Lev! you probably know me better as @dear-space-cadet (formerly Sol, formerly trilo-bilo, always franzdom.ferdinand on instagram). i run franzarchive.carrd.co and i was a part of writing I'll Try Anything Once (of Billy Goodbye fame, duh) with my friends Allegra, Beth, and Sal (and a rotating cast of other writers, but we were the core 4). this blog is an archive of Franz Ferdinand and Franzdom stuff i like and/or think about a lot.

i also created the Franz Media Drive a few years ago as a part of my (quite defunct) Franz Archive project. i update the media drive semi-frequently, and it is an open archive anyone can add to!!!

Interview with Alex Kapranos after concert in Melbourne

I remember reading a conversation you were having about The Pogues and you said “the great thing about The Pogues is that they took folk music back from the twats, though recently the twats have reclaimed it again…” Are Mumford & Sons the kind of twats you were talking about?

I wasn’t talking about anyone in particular. If you listen to the lyrics of most folk songs they’re pretty crude and usually about the extreme end of ordinary life. There was this period after the Alan Lomax years where it became a very academic genre of music, preserved in aspic, but I think it happens to other genres of music as well.

I think the way people talk about punk rock nowadays is like that. I recently went to the Hayward Gallery in London to see an exhibition of punk rock fanzines and singles and I was really fascinated to see it. But it was such an iconoclastic, academic environment, and it was so far removed from the dirt and immediacy of the music that made it so good in the first place.

I don’t think punk rock artists ever wanted to be studied.

No I don’t think so either, they wanted to fuck shit up. But as for Mumford and Sons, I’m not going to slag them off, they’re an easy target for many people and in a way I find Mumford and Sons less obnoxious than…you know I’m gonna stop what I’m saying there, because I was going to slag off another band.

Well speaking of other bands to slag off, we recently had The Cribs here in Melbourne and they played quite a few tracks off the album you produced for them. Do you keep in touch?

Yeah we’re good friends, they’re brilliant and I like Ryan’s new band Exclamation Point as well, they have some really good songs. I remember when I went to produce that record [Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever in 2007], the first night in Vancouver we went out to a local bar called The Morrissey and they drank me under the table. I thought I could handle my drink, but fucking hell, the next morning in the studio I had the most vicious hangover I’ve ever had and I couldn’t start the session. Some producer ay? I kept having to leave the studio to throw up. I think they found it very amusing.

Random facts with... Paul Thomson (Franz Ferdinand)

Every once in a while, each of us gets the chance to do something that will forever remain in the memory. For me, one such occasion came about recently when the idea of interviewing ¼ of Franz Ferdinand was floated under my nose - an opportunity I seized within mere seconds of receiving the email. As I was a teenager when the band first hit the big time, I delved into everything they released and learnt far more basslines than would be deemed normal (at last count, I can play Dark Of The Matinee on 4 different instruments - a valuable life skill, of course). They’ve recently put together a compilation of excellent tracks for Late Night Tales - including this beauty - so I had a good long chat to drummer Paul Thomson about, well, whatever random facts either of us had assembled.

I was unaware that drummers had interns, do they carry your sticks for you?

They used to be called roadies.

Bob told me that Thatcher was originally a chemist that worked on the synthesis of soft serve “Mr Whippy” ice cream but the New Yorker chipped in and debunked that.

I think Bob is probably a more reliable source than the New Yorker. Just.

Turns out she had no redeeming qualities whatsoever and was just an evil witch after all.
