The day democracy showed up...
For months, I have passed a huge "Penny Hubbard" sign as I turned towards my alley. She was the incumbent representing St. Louis's 78th district. I paid her signs little mind because I knew I wouldn't be voting in her primary. Then the headlines started after the Aug 2 election. Talk of mishandled absentee ballots. Shady election board members. A husband who went too far. Then the conversations started around the neighborhood. People sure don't like cheaters. And to think she just eked out a win by 90 votes, thanks to these absentee votes. But, what does this conservative like about the Democrat who introduced Bernie Sanders in St Louis? Bruce Franks, Jr gets it. He is an activist. "Successful people have a social responsibility to make the world a better place and not just take from it." And that's what he is doing. Chief Dotson has him on speed dial. Franks has started a conversation WITH law enforcement to work together to bring change. This family man is taking matters into his own hands. This succesful business owner knows if you want something done, sometimes you have to do it yourself. I am not saying I know that Hubbard's campaign committed fraud and broke election laws. I do know that something is fishy. When I went to vote, I had to be too blunt with a Hubbard poll worker, so that I could just go in and vote. I've worked polls for years. That isn't ok. And usually if that kind of nonsense is going on, there's more to the story. And the rest of District 78 seemed to agree yesterday. Franks won the revote with 76.12% with 100% of prescincts reporting. Definitely more than 90 votes this time. Between this, and the voter ID law Missouri is sending to the ballot, I have hope. These big machines will slowly be shut down. We the people are not standing for this nonsense. Too many have put blood, sweat, and tears into the right to vote. Who one votes for is THEIR decision. And people need to get that. Fraud. Intimidation. These things have no place in the polling process. Democracy definitely showed up in St. Louis yesterday. Congrats to Bruce Franks, Jr. If you win in November, I look forward to your work to make this city even better, and definitely safer.
