i love writing out numbers and then putting them in parentheses like "one (1)" even when i dont need to i think its funny
Kathryn Janeway done as That Picture of Katharine Hepburn. Maybe this is some more Killing Game stuff where Katrine is a dashing pilot during the interwar period idk
I love when people ask "how did you learn this skill?" I just started, there's no secret. that's it. a vast majority of the time the only thing holding you back is your trepidation to start.
we brought your gay little boyfriend back from the dead. happy pride ig
star trek voyager characters on Open Mic Night in the mess hall.
Tom Paris: organized it. roped people into it. claims the first slot. spends his five minutes telling jokes like “I just flew in from the New Zealand penal colony and boy are my arms tired!!”. polite chuckles all around because he leans into telling awful jokes.
Harry Kim: technically perfect jokes delivered with too much nervous laughter until tom starts heckling and suddenly his five minutes is all crowd work
Tuvok: Tom did not expect him to agree, but Tuvok delivers a series of deadpan riddles and knock knock jokes to devastating effect. runaway success of the evening.
Chakotay: was NOT going to participate until the captain teased him about stage fright. observational humor, the type of person to pick someone out of the crowd and deliver his material directly to them.
Neelix: a TIGHT five entirely on leola root. stuns the crew with his self-awareness, makes them all wonder if he’s been inflicting Leola root on them for the Laughs this whole time
B’elanna Torres: does alright until tom also decides to heckle her. she throws the mic at him, chaos ensues, she does not complete her five minutes.
Seven: her jokes themselves are not funny. What gets people is when she informs them they may proceed to laughter. Similar to Harry in that they are technically perfect jokes. Some nervous chuckles, most people are relieved when she leaves the stage.
Kathryn Janeway: has been having a Good Time watching her staff do this, very alarmed when Chakotay says turnabout is fair play and she ought to get up on stage. no structured jokes, tells anecdotes from childhood/the academy that get laughs because for some reason people on her ship think she is straight laced and she’s always been That Reckless. Probably leaned up against a lectern or piano or something with a glass in her hand like Frank Sinatra the whole time.
The Doctor: demanded to “save the best for last”, absolutely distraught when people start yawning and getting up to head out. his fault for turning his five minutes into fifteen on the history of the commedia dell’arte style of improvisational theater
Well, this should help.
this is how the show went right
I like to think that at some point over Voyager’s journey, Kathryn Janeway volunteered to babysit Naomi Wildman while Samantha was on shore leave. Partly out of a desire to give her crew some much needed R&R, partly out of genuine affection for Naomi, and partly out of a good old-fashioned “I always thought about having kids someday and I’ve owned dogs and managed ensigns, how hard could it be?” hubris on the captain’s part.
I also like to think this is well into Naomi’s “Captain’s Assistant” fixation, so when she’s informed she’ll be spending a couple of days with Captain Janeway, she sees this as an Opportunity.
Between Naomi’s desire to be a perfect child and thus obviously excellent assistant, and Janeway skimming a few child development papers and walking away with “talk to her like an adult, got it”, both of them are convinced it will be just fine.
And by both of their accounts, it was. Just a small issue with the replicator but that’s fine because everybody likes ice cream for dinner once in a while. Naomi was a Delight To Have Around, and Naomi is returned to Samantha after sharply saluting the captain and then hugging her, which makes Janeway laugh and say “at ease” while also being a bit weepy.
But then a few days later, Sam starts getting odd reports. Neelix says that the first time they re-entered Naomi’s Flotter program, Treevis held Neelix at wooden sword point before kneeling and swearing fealty to Naomi. Naomi just grinned and said “Captain Janeway reprogrammed him to be like a knight so I could learn the responsibility of caring for other people who depend on me! Did you know her mom WROTE FLOTTER???”
Harry approaches Sam the next day asking if everything’s alright because Naomi came up to him and asked whether he “felt a kind of camaraderie - no that was HER word, Samantha - with her over being the two survivors of a doomed alternate timeline”. And then she patted his arm and assured him that “everything would be alright, ensign.”
Most grievously, the Doctor demands to know what kind of media Naomi’s been consuming because she asked him during her check-up if the rendition of Pierrot he’s been humming weren’t “a bit derivative of Jean-Gaspard Deburau, and wouldn’t he like to put his own spin on it?”
Samantha has absolutely no idea how to broach this with the captain, whose comments about Naomi being “extremely bright and interested in philosophy and the arts” are starting to make a great deal more sense.
If you have a senior to check on ask them to "borrow" something small so they think they're helping you.
My mom (72) recently downsized and moved close enough to me that checking on her in person regularly is not really out of my way, but when I was obvious about it she wouldn’t let me “stop-by” because she was, “fine”.
Well, one day I actually needed some aluminum foil so I called and asked if I could borrow enough to cover a baking tin because I didn’t want to run to the store. She said sure, but when I got to her house she needed furniture moved, a wasp nest removed, and her coffee pot fixed. After I got the foil I mentioned each thing cautiously and she let me take care of them for her. So next weekend I’ll need a cup of rice and check on her again.
Even better, here’s an array of more reciprocal options for building relationship & supporting seniors’ dignity and independence:
- ask for something they can actually help you with. Elders have skills. Mending? Advice about knitting, gardening, home repair, nevermind professional training?
-ask about their experiences. “I was reading about xyz event the other day & I would love to know what that time was like for you. Can we chat about it over tea?” Goes double for family history for relatives.
-“Someone gave me this [or, I ended up with extra] & I don’t need/want it, but I bet you have a use for it. Can I bring it over? I would hate for it to go to waste.”
-work side-by-side. They get your physical help, you get their experience & expertise. “Could I come over & have you show me how you [used to] prune your gorgeous roses? I’m trying to get better with mine.”
We've been trying for hours. We need a break.
suddenly the fucking
they must've opened the fridge
tom paris in the middle of the mess hall LOUDLY recounting to harry, b’elanna, and seven how last time they played captain proton he had to beat off three of chaotica’s goons in order to rescue harry and b’elanna leans over to harry like “he means beat up, right?” and harry just hits her with the :/

It is genuinely so infuriating that Wikipedia's official policy is to misgender anyone who uses neopronouns
what gets me about year of hell is there's no easing into it. one minute they're chatting with their new buddy and the next their ship is smoking and falling apart. they're in it early in the ep and they stay there, but they never say out loud like wow this is getting bad huh? from our perspective it's instant, and doesn't look good. and kj knows it too, she stays out of the minutia of saving the crew and lets chakotay be the one who cares about that stuff while she focuses on the fighting. but then chakotay isn't there anymore and she finally sends the crew away, which is what he suggested and she didn't want. but she can't fight and care about the crew at the same time so she has to chop off as many vulnerable parts of herself as she can to survive. idk there's just something about reducing yourself during intense stress, limiting the damage by cutting out the soft parts, and then still losing too much in the fight and never getting it back. haha
