“That’s exactly what I was afraid of,” she said dryly, for a moment echoing her mother’s tone of voice flawlessly. “I appreciate your dedication, but there’s no need to feel responsible for so much.” With her hands locked behind her back in a polite, if military, position, and her eyes surveying the docks, she certainly seemed competent. “There are political situations in the city I’m not aware of, and I understand that someone may use me to get to my family. In those situations, I hope you’ll step in, and we will apprehend the attackers together. Outside of that unusual circumstance, I hope you’ll step back and let me enjoy the good the city has to offer. I’ve never been here before, so I hope some things happen to me.”
She didn’t smile, no, not quite, but she did side-eye her new companion (she would NOT think of him as a babysitter) with curiosity. “You’re the Avatar’s friend, aren’t you? The umm, the fire probender?”
“Understood. I'll make sure I stay out of eyesight as much as possible.” Mako raised both of his hands into a fist and palm salute before stepping aside. It wasn’t anything new to Mako that he sometimes was more like a nuisance to other people rather than a protector, and Mako surely didn’t take it personally. He himself knew very well how odd it feels when you’re not able to have some sort of privacy. Even if Mako wasn’t guarded most of the time by all sorts of people, he surely didn’t have much privacy either when he was busy being the one who was doing all the guarding.
A feeling of awe came over him when the princess mentioned his past. To think of it, it hadn’t even been too long ago, yet his older self still felt so alien to him. -- People really did underestimate how much they would change just within five years.
“I’m good friends with Avatar Korra, yes,” Mako said, pridefully. “It’s been a while since I saw her last, however. And an even longer time since I have probended, I must admit.”
