if i was born 500 years ago i would have been speculating that the two dudes who went to get firewood together were fucking
chat, how long do y’all think 500 years is. Romeo and Juliet was written in the 1500s. 500 years is not the Stone Age.
why do u think people stopped collecting firewood after caveman times

Hi this was my post on inaturalist when I went to Barbados w my mom (she licked it too. We are both still alive)
It tasted genuinely great, like green apple and red plum with a bit of chayote and a nutty almond flavour. Our mouths/tongues went numb and swelled up a lil. We took an antihistamine and gargled sea water for two hours and were fine after, but yeah definitely a really stupid thing to do, would not recommend poisoning yourself and your mom abroad.
The above is a video shared by smrchildsadness on Twitter, showing a person participating in a pride parade exchanging a pride flag with a person standing on his (am using his pronoun based on the TikToks/Tweets of what happened) doorway who had a Portuguese flag. There are sounds of cheers and crying and the two people hug each other as they exchange the flags. The man at the doorway then waved kisses to the crowd within the pride parade.
The Tweet says: "NO YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HE WAS WAVING THE PORTUGUESE FLAG BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE A PRIDE FLAG AND THEY TRADED FLAGS AND HE'S SO EMOTIONAL TO GET HIS OWN PRIDE FLAG I'M EMOTIONALLY RUINED"
For context, apparently they were worried that maybe he's a nationalist because he was waving the Portuguese flag and some nationalists opposing the pride march were waving that flag. But upon interacting with him, it turns out he didn't have have a pride flag and he wanted to wave *a* flag in support of the pride march. So they had an exchange and now he has his own pride flag 😭🥹.
The image above is a Tweet by kunwara_ladkaa that says "I'm crying so much right now (Image taken by Manuel Fernando Araújo/Lusa)". The image shows the same man from the pride parade crying as he hugs his new pride flag.
The above image is a Tweet by dudz_zZzz that says "ainda não parei de pensar nele," which according to Google translate from Portuguese to English is "I still haven't stopped thinking about him." The image is a drawing of the person from the pride parade, crying as he hugs his new pride flag.

oof. no need to call me out so hard with this Pterry
there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.
short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.
meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.
in happier pride news i actually found this deeply heartwarming
that's solidarity baybeeee
Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”
My understanding is that the cut funding from Durham council was £2,500 - the trade union donations raised in response were worth £25,000
A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.

The video game history foundation has just finished scanning every copy of the neopets magazine and added it to their archive. Super cool!
It might be a little silly, but Neopets Magazine is an important slice of a different part of gaming culture.
During its four-year run, Neopets Magazine covered the latest news and strategies for the influential 2000s-era web game. It also had a lot of articles about Neopets merchandise and trading cards. In fact, it’s mostly ads for Neopets products. Or long articles about Neopets lore. At best, it is mostly an off-topic magazine. So why did we focus on this magazine of our archive? Simple: it’s about the game’s audience. Neopets was, arguably, the defining girl game of the 2000s. An entire microgeneration of girls got their start in the world of digital entertainment by raising virtual pets and playing Flash games to get Neopoints. [...] Notably, many of the magazine’s articles are about creativity and customization. There’s shades in here of the gameplay styles that have become more popular in the last decade with the rise of cozy games and farming sims. My favorite quirk of Neopets Magazine is in the audience survey that came with some issues. In one survey question, they asked whether readers bought this magazine at a clothing store! That would have reached a completely different audience than we usually associate with game magazines. Can you imagine PC Gamer being sold at a Charlotte Russe? The point is that Neopets The Official Magazine represents a different slice of gaming culture, one that we know matters to researchers and to our extended community.

Mate, you’ve got a chubby lizard on your dashboard
Graced by Geckolepis typica from Madagascar. I love that they’re quite round creatures and then they have these dainty little toes. Also, their scales are full bone and both scale and skin come off when they get grabbed, which is…unpleasant. Consequently, catching these geckos for research without damaging them requires special techniques. 19th century researchers used bundles of cotton wool, but I imagine this wasn’t very effective, because cotton still has a lot of friction and the friction would pull the skin and scales off. In my (quite extensive) experience, the best technique is to carefully and quickly flick the geckos from their tree trunk or branch into an open dry plastic bag using a finger or stick.
'scuse me, Mr @markscherz, does it harm the gecko for the scales to come off?
like, of course it harms them but... can they grow back? like how some lizards can drop their tails and eventually the tails grow back
Not only do they grow back, but they come back so well that we cannot even tell where they have ripped off before. This is very weird, because when a lizard loses its tail, it is very obvious where it has been lost and regrown. Not so these chaps. They seek out a humid place to hide, and within a few weeks, skin and scales have started to regrow. The fact that they can do this so well is the reason a team has just sequenced their genome. I believe it is hoped that the skin regeneration tech they have built into their cells could eventually be harnessed for human skin grafts.
Recently, I made this post about invisible legs and how they can be manipulated to make creatures look like they're flying (or swimming).
With five strategically placed legs with three feet each, this specific creation animates as though it's flying above the ground and flapping its wings. It's pretty neat!
However, I've only ever seen these invisible legs used to make creatures float, and while I was working on another creature for an old request in my inbox, I wondered if invisible legs could also be used to manipulate the movement of regular legs.
Specifically, this creature I was working on is shaped a bit like a kangaroo. Kangaroos, of course, are known for hopping rather than walking--in fact, they can't walk, and are only able to move by hopping.
But, Spore isn't made for that kind of movement on two legs.
Looking back at the dragon, the two pairs of hind and wing legs are both synced up, and if you isolate that motion, it looks more like hopping. I figured that if I created a similar set up with invisible legs for this one, I could get the two hind legs to rise and fall in sync.
Success! It isn't perfect, but it gets the job done. Now, with the walk cycle sorted out, I can work on building the rest of the creature, adding more details and other parts. I decided I wasn't happy with the head, so I started playing around with that.
... Huh? I didn't touch the legs at all, and yet, the removal and addition of different parts has altered the walk cycle. Interesting! I decided to do some testing, hypothesizing that maybe it had to do with the number of parts--perhaps whether the number was even or odd affected it. I added another pair of horns, but the walk cycle didn't change. Out of curiosity, I added a third pair...
... and it's back to hopping! But, if you compare it to the original hop, it's different. The normal hind legs are now synced with the invisible middle legs. As a result, the overall motion is more extreme and exaggerated, and the tail now collides with the ground.
I added another pair of horns, and now it's back to walking, but it still has a slightly different gait than the other walk. The normal hind legs and invisible middle legs are less synced up. Each added part seemed to make a difference... so I added one more pair of horns.
And mysteriously, that addition made it return to the original desired hopping motion. Fascinating!
With the knowledge that adding and removing parts changes the walk cycle, I decided to strip the legs off, finalize the design and all the parts, and leave the invisible legs for last.
It got a bit complicated. In addition to the two normal legs, it has five invisible legs. The two rear pairs have two feet each, and the single front leg has three feet. It isn't quite perfect, but it suits this kangaroo-like creature much better than a regular two-legged walk.
Beyond the final result, I don't have a satisfying conclusion for this post. The inner workings of Spore are as intriguing as they are befuddling--why do non-limb parts have a bearing on how a creature walks? What is it in the game's guts that dictates this? Is it a bug, or a feature? I don't know!
