replaying DOG and DDI almost directly after playing SEA made me realize that the newer games are really just lacking a sense of realism on all levels? i think the newer games would proooobably benefit from someone being there to ask the creators “ok, this sounds interesting as a game, but is it realistic? how do we make this as real for our players as possible?”

i mean, i loved SEA for what it was. but in it, like the rest of the newer games, most of the dialogue is not anything anyone would actually say to another person, and the tasks are a little much, and the puzzles don’t make sense for nancy to find or solve unless the suspects are geniuses, and the characters don’t have a lot of personality that isn’t revealed through pure exposition…

Okay adding onto this, I was really bothered in MED how sometimes the dialogue felt wrong

It sounded as if they just inserted sentences from previous games or recordings, especially stuff nancy would say. None of the sentences (mostly between nancy and sonny- or at least that’s where I noticed it the most) flowed nicely and the tone in Nancy’s voice just didn’t fit the mood and this is why I can’t sleep at night

I agree with the both of you. While I was playing SEA, I just kept thinking how ridiculous it was that this really old colonial ship had all of these extensive puzzle built into it. Also, with the fact that it was supposed to have been rebuilt (I think?) like if that’s the case, then wouldn’t the people rebuilding the ship have most of the clues to find the treasure? ALSO with the lighthouse puzzles, wouldn’t it have to have been built AFTER the ship, AFTER the captain and his wife died, so how would have the builders have know to put the puzzle leading to the mystery there? Idk maybe I’m overthinking.

GOD YES all of this

i fucking adore the old games for having what’s now considered “boring” puzzles and chores in them, but it makes them fucking realistic. a lot of the premises are more believable, too. FIN seems totally plausible (on like almost every level, tbh. like 9/10 of that game could really actually happen), SSH seems in the realm of possibility, as does DOG, DDI, even SHA if you believe that tragic beautiful love could drive someone to set up such an elaborate puzzle-filled treasure hunt. and yeah, some of them have puzzles that are a bit much for the real world, but at least there’s enough “boring” normal things you have to do, like priming a well or picking vegetables (we hate it, but come on it’s at least there’s no zap up puzzle involved) or, like, when lights go out in the stairwell you fix it by flipping some goddamned switches. done. realistic. it helps me swallow the fact that a tower from a castle in france is now in wisconsin or that, you know. that whole killer whale being a spy thing. 

her interactive seems so stressed out about making the games cool that they’re becoming kind of ridiculous. i don’t care about nancy going to cool foreign countries and doing more and more elaborate and ridiculous things (SPY and MED and LIE i just cannot accept even remotely happening in any way in this world) and it’s losing touch with what made them really good. which was just a good fucking mystery. and part of that was that you felt like it could really happen. it made you feel like, hey, what if i went on vacation and stumbled across something like this? could i figure it out myself? nancy picks locks with bobby pins and helps people do boring tasks so she can later snoop around their files and break into their computers that have very normal passwords set up. we can’t believe that these games could ever happen to us anymore, and that takes away a lot of the joy. if these were movies people would be like “what the fuck is this she’s fixing an electrical grid….. how????” no one would buy it. it wouldn’t be a compelling story because half the shit is just impossible and bat shit crazy.

i mean i still love these games because they’re a lot of fun, but at the same time you’re all totally right. they’re losing grip with reality. they’re way to self referential (like in VEN margherita mentions seeing RED FUCKING KNOTT at a party. in venice. in her little richy rich venitian “high society”. red knott? the anti-social bird watcher? vacationing in venice and rubbing shoulders with that crowd? jesus christ, people, there’s only so much i can handle) 

anyway. they’ve seemed to be in a rut for a long time making games that are like “this is what nancy drew games are like” instead of making, just. good mystery games.
