Exercise To Feel GREAT! NOT To Simply Burn Calories . One of the biggest lies in fitness is the "number of calories burned" reading the treadmill or cross trainer gives you, or the spinning instructor who promotes classes saying "burn over 800 calories in under an hour!" . Exercise calorie expenditure is massively overestimated & exercise alone is almost useless for weight loss. A 2001 review of exercise intervention studies (PMID: 11427779), found that after 20 weeks, weight loss was less than expected, and that "the amount of exercise energy expenditure had no correlation with weight loss in these longer studies." . Even when you do work out, those extra calories burned only account for a tiny part of your total energy expenditure. Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure is made up of 4 components: . 1) Basal metabolic rate (BMR), or the energy used for basic functioning when the body is at rest; 2) Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), the energy expended daily during non-exercise movement such as walking to work, doing your job, making phone calls, fidgeting, etc 3) Thermic effect of food (TEF), the energy used to break down food, 4) Exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT), the energy used in planned physical activity . Other than gaining/losing total body weight, we have very little control over our BMR, but it's our biggest energy output. This is the amount of energy your body expends when entirely sedentary and fasted and is the amount of energy required to sustain your body’s main functions. . Consider this - during the 1hr you go to gym, you would still be burning calories during that same 1hr if you were lying bed. This is often overlooked when it comes to calculating the amount of actual calories burning exercising. . So Do Not Exercise JUST TO BURN CALORIES.
