This is Magalumbi Island in the municipality of Batad. It is 126.5 km north of Iloilo in the Island of Panay, Philippines. The 8th of November, this island was hit by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). With a population of 207 people, 107 of them are kids under the age of 18. Only 4 houses remained standing after the storm. The focus of the project is to rebuild 43 houses, 40 bangkas, and a couple of communal infrastructures so that the community can rebuild their lives and start up their livelihood.
We will be delivering materials for 40 boats on December 16th, 2013. Just in time for Christmas.

WELCOME TO FIXPHIL!
FixPhil is a campaign to raise funds in rebuilding two remote island baranggays in Northern Iloilo after Typhoon Haiyan employing sustainability strategies. The project started out with a group of friends that ended up doing a series of immediate relief operations for Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda victims in Northern Iloilo under the banner of reliefop.org. The original plan was just to hand out the basic need that is food to the typhoon victims. But over the weeks, a lot of people and other private group sectors have taken the same initiative and have been sending out immediate relief help as well. Coming to terms with the idea that we cannot help everyone and as our funding amounted to more than enough to rebuild a community, the group has decided to focus the fund into rebuilding two small island baranggays in Northern Iloilo - Magalumbi Island in Batad and Sombrero Island in Concepcion. We figured that the best way to help is to give sustainable relief. The idea is to rebuild the island populations' boats, shelters and livelihood systems into sustainable and stable ones. Prior to the calamity, these islands were already poverty-stricken. And when the storm came, they lost all their houses. Most of all, they lost their boats and with that their livelihood. And for the kids of Magalumbi Island, it also meant swimming 20 minutes to the mainland just to get to school. What made us commit to this project was these island people's sustainable solution to the problem - they just don't want to rely on relief goods but instead need help in fixing and rebuilding their boats so they can go back to fishing and send their kids to school. How can you not help a people with the initiative to help themselves? With your donations, together we can build two sustainable island communities that could be testaments that disasters - as Green Warrior Steve would put it - could be a gateway to the new world and not to extinction.
