highly unpopular opinion (oh and spoilers for Barbie, I guess)
The barbie movie is not good. As a film, it is not good. I was genuinely excited to see it. I had high expectations.
I don't think it's very fair that any amount of criticism is being brushed off as conservative and anti-whatever. It's not a good movie and it's almost like they manufactured it so that any critique could be pushed aside as anti-feminism, the crazy conservatives, etc.
just hear me out because i need to talk about this somewhere. There is almost no story arch, the themes of the movie are ALL OVER THE PLACE, there is almost no character development for anyone, characters that had no actual purpose (anyone in reality), and instead of showing us the "message(s)" through the story they just tell it to you in a long as hell very forced monologue. Is the movie about feminism? Is it about empowerment? is it about identity? who the hell knows? The entire plot point with feminism/patriarchy had NOTHING to do with the final "message" of the film (also a long ass monologue) when the theme suddenly changes to identity. The feminism/ patriarchy point was an easy grab and they didn't even try to do it well.
You could literally take out the ENTIRE middle of the movie (everything in reality, the kens taking over barbie land) and the story would make more sense.
I'm here for that ending point in the movie, that you don't have to know who you are and can just be without having to label yourself as an identity (job, sexuality, purpose, gender, etc.), but nothing else in the movie is even about that.
I fully believe it would have been a better movie if it (1) took place only in barbie land (2) involved Barbie being played with in reality shown through her identity (job, love life, etc.) changing every time she woke up or only lasting a couple of days (3) Barbie being self-aware enough to realize that because she always wakes up differently that she has no true sense of self in the way that President Barbie or Vet Barbie does and that she feels a pressure to know exactly who she is or she feels like she doesn't have worth (without a consistent identity). Honestly, how many of us actually kept our Barbies in only the clothes she came with? Hell, they could of also touched on how women are constantly pitted against each other.
Yes, I enjoyed the Ken dance battle. I actually quite enjoyed the first idk 20 minutes. And yes, there were a couple parts that I laughed at but honestly 1/5 stars, will not watch it again.
