… .
. If Shinpachi hated it so much he wouldn’t keep a dairy and turn it into a book. Also Heisuke definitely had a good education. He might’ve been illegitimate, but it would be more shameful for the family if he didn’t read/write properly. This is the stupidest headcanon I’ve seen so far.
I would not call it the stupidest headcanon I’ve seen so far, because headcanons are personal and should be respected but… isn’t it kind of canon that Nagakura (and not only the historical person but also the Hakuouki character) actually LOVED reading and books? Like on the Drama-CD with Kazamahime Shinpachi is really excited and happy when they got all the books from the library, points out his favourite ones and gets angry when Sano and Heisuke question his passion for reading and books. Actually this side of him is one of the many reasons why I love him so much.
…Not like the Shinsengumi also had literary instructors (like Itou) with kenjutsu instructors, artillery instructors, spearing instructors or military strategies instructors…they were in fact quite cultured.
(also Edo society was one of the most literate society in XIXe century and as it always said Nagakura Shinpachi is the most bookworm of the Shinsengumi…not like he was one of our main sources about them through his writings)
