How To Prepare Your Yard & Garden For Spring
At FlipTask, our Task Runners complete tasks, errands, and other work of all kinds. It includes both inside and outside of the home, from cleaning to lawn care, and more.Â
With spring finally here and summer just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about preparing the lawn, garden, and outdoor areas at your home. A few tips:
1. In The Yard:Â The yard and lawn have likely taken a bit of a beating during the winter months and will be ready for some care now that warmer weather is arriving. Begin by assessing any damage and removing debris. You may notice particular issues in and around high traffic areas such as sidewalk edges or near any roadway or driveway. Give search online to what types of treatments are ideal this time of year for the yard and lawn -- there are a range such as treating crab grass, aeration, and fertilizing that can take place early in the season. Get a sense of what to do when before tackling it in your own yard or lawn. You can find natural, organic, and traditional tactics online.Â
2. In The Garden: You’ll want to start by exploring the garden and surrounding areas for any debris or damage. Many homeowners in our Colorado communities put down protective measures for the garden areas and shrubbery or other plants for winter. You can likely safely remove most of these treatments, though be sure to do a little homework before doing so to ensure protection should any weather arise. You can start with prepping soil, and potentially planting seeds that need longer seasons, order bulbs and other seeds, and get cleaning done during the early spring months. You’ll want to keep up your garden care effort from here through end of summer.
3. Around Home And Building Exteriors: Winter can take a toll on buildings and structures, including your home, shed, and other storage areas. Now is the time to examine these areas for any damage. Take note of repairs you may need or specific items that need cleaning as you go. Spend time cleaning up any debris that are around your home or other buildings. Be sure to include gutters and rain traps, check the chimney if you have one for any damage, and examine the roof. Now is the time to tackle these repairs before any spring rain hits. You’ll also want to make note and start tackling painting and refreshing that may be needed now.
5. Play And/Or Pet Areas: Play areas such as sandboxes, swing sets, club houses, swimming pools, and other recreational parts of your home and yard are also ideal to examine and take care of during the early spring months. Clear away any debris, fix damage, and prep these areas as needed, such as adding fresh wood chips under swing sets, or power washing wood surfaces. For pet areas, cleaning grass or other areas of pet waste can be ideal. Many homeowners are using artificial grass for pets -- now is the time to clean this as well. Simple scooping up of any waste, and a washing with the hose can do the job. You can also take a look at your patio, balcony or other outdoor recreational spaces at this time for the same needs and care.Â
4. Outdoor Furniture, Play Sets, And Other Items: Your outdoor furniture, play equipment, BBQ grill, and other items are in need of attention this time of year as well. Get everything ready for the warmer months with a good examination and cleaning. Note and take care of any repairs as you go. Check equipment for damages and other needs. If you’re using metal play equipment, check for any rust or other issues. For wood sets, it can be good to sand down any areas that received damage such as splintering during the winter months. Do the same with patio furniture, large outdoor toys, and other items. Renting a power washer can help clean everything with ease.
Most of all, enlist help! You can list these types of tasks, errands, and other work around your yard, garden, and home on FlipTask all season long!Â
