24: do they have a short temper? what’s most likely to set it off? No, even though anger was always something that was encouraged in the Carrow household, Flora has always had an even temper, and her family’s general disregard for any other feelings has led her to shove everything, including anger, very deep down. At this point, she’s more likely to feel shame, or embarrassment, than anger.

25: do they get scared easily? does loud noises, shouting, etc, scare them? No, Flora is more anxious than fearful, she tends to worry about how she will handle what might happen, rather than whether or not it will.

26: what are they most passionate about? what could they debate about for hours? Ironically, Flora loves talking about her work. The intricacies of magical theory and how it relates to the practical world fascinate her.

27: what do they never, ever want to speak of, ever? Flora hates discussing blood purity, because she knows she’ll have to lie, and it’s actually something she feels rather strongly about.

28: do they have kids? do they want kids? if so, how many? An heir and a spare, that’s what Flora has been raised on. Ever the pragmatist, as many children as it takes to have two boys is as many as she wants.

29: is there something they’d like to change about themselves physically? So much. Flora feels that she’s too tall and awkward to be truly attractive, and while she doesn’t want to be a bombshell like Octavia, she would like to be pretty.

30: is there something about their personality they want to change? Flora is mostly comfortable with who she is. She prefers to be a wallflower, a quiet observer, but she also knows her family would rather she be more assertive, and sometimes she wishes she was bolder.

31: do they have good fashion sense? or do they just wear whatever? The answer is really neither, Flora is very conscientious about her wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean she always makes good choices. It’s more important for her to wear something modest and sensible than flattering or stylish. Her wardrobe is filled with long dresses in muted colors, with nary a slit nor a low neckline in sight.

32: do they critique others easily? do they judge from afar? Flora is constantly passing judgement, on herself most of all, but she keeps it to herself unless directly asked.

33: are they too hard on themselves over the little things? Constantly. Flora has never been enough for her family, and she’s internalized that to believe that she is simply not enough.

34: are they the jealous type? what are they most likely to be jealous of? Jealous? No. Envious? Yes. Flora rarely, if ever, sees others as her competition, but she covets other peoples’ freedom, their ease of conversation, their simple life.

8: what do they sleep in? pj’s, normal clothes, nothing? Flora sleeps in high end, but sensible, sleep sets. It’s one of the only times you’d catch her in shorts or pants instead of a skirt or dress.

After talking to Susan, Padma was still a little confused on the task at hand. In school there had always been a structure, rules for assignments and professors to talk to when you were confused. After seven years at Hogwarts Padma’s brain had gotten used to that structure and a lot of times her brain still worked that way. The freedom of being able to write down whatever you wanted, with maybe as many things as you wanted was throwing her off a bit. There had to be a limit to things right? or maybe there wasn’t? She wasn’t sure, so after looking around and spotting Flora not too far away, Padma got up to move herself closer. “Hey,” she greeted. They weren’t exactly friends but they had always been polite to each other at work and Padma liked Flora. She was a twin just like her. “So are there rules to this sort of thing or do you think we can just do whatever we want?”

Flora had been attending pureblood midsummer celebrations her entire life, and by this point, it was really a matter of rote. It was more of a performance for her, anyway, the appearance of things more important than the actual facts of them. Every year she spoke to the same people, danced the same steps, wrote the same platitudes on a scrap of paper to throw into the bonfire. But after years of working together, she’d begun to notice that Padma’s brain worked in a more regimented way, so when Padma asked her question, Flora considered it carefully. “There are conventions, more than there are rules. People usually write down wishes that fit the themes of the day, but life and love are fairly broad. The health of family members is traditional, as is a wish for a happy marriage from those who’ve announced an engagement.” Flora paused for a moment, wondering if more options would make it better or worse for Padma. Ultimately, she couldn’t simply not give the other witch the full picture. “But it doesn’t have to be a wish, it can be a hope, or even a fear or secret that you’d like to release in the coming year.”

Marcus hated the trappings and trimmings that went along with running a titular Sacred Estate, but he had been the one to bear the name and by default the brunt of Higher Society. It was all suffocating really, but when the Minister had approached him in regards to holding a day-long celebration in honor of Midsummer, he’d been faced with a trying moral dilemma. As one of the handful of Sacred 28 Names that was still alive and well, and one of even fewer that had no dark allegiances or known sinister ties he was somewhat of a commodity for the new age politicians to use as a sort of figure head of ‘good behavior’. It felt slimy to him, and he knew his ancestral line would balk at the overly saccharine show of ‘blood unity’ that the Ministry was hoping to tout the event as, but on the other hand an excuse to show off and get drunk on direct invitation of the Minister of Magic was not an order to be ignored. And so he and his team of elves and the familial designer (and security staff) had set about readying the entirety of the Estate for the party. White banners and bunting with soft green accents hung off of every available surface, the solarium charmed to rain petals softly over guests and plants arrayed in nearly every open spot giving the house and grounds a feeling as though Spring herself had blessed and decorated the home. Flicking the cuff of his crisp new suit, he made sure his father’s ring and crest pin stood in order on his lapel, before descending down into the unfolding festivities.

“So happy you could make it out today. As the gracious host, I can only hope that you’re having a pleasant time so far, yes?”

It was only polite to greet the host and thank them for inviting you upon arriving at an event, and that was the excuse Flora used for making a point of seeking out Marcus as soon as she set foot on the Flint estate. After their last meeting they’d decided to be friends, an arrangement Flora had gone along with more for strategy than anything else. She’d made a miscalculation in assuming his reluctance had more to do with her specifically than marriage generally, but being his friend would give her the perfect opportunity to rectify that. As his friend she could talk him around to the idea of marriage as a concept, before returning to her original goal. It was, perhaps, too much effort to put into someone that she wasn’t entirely sure about, but being just friends meant she was free to explore other options at the same time.

The only problem was, Flora wasn’t terribly practiced in the business of friendship, which she probably shouldn’t think of as a business, at all. She’d never been terribly good at relating to people outside the strict bounds and lines of formal society. Perhaps, she could just try honesty. After all, based on their last conversation, that was what he seemed to be offering her, so she smiled hesitantly in response to his welcome. “Everything is lovely, but you don’t seem terribly excited to be hosting.”

Flora had always taken her responsibility as the heir to the Carrow family seriously, but it was a heavy weight to her. Always being in the public eye and knowing that she had an image to maintain that didn’t quite fit was draining, especially at day long events like the Midsummer Celebration. She’d lasted as long as she could before she needed to take a break. She wandered the extensive grounds of the Flint estate until she came to a gentle stream far from any whispering gazes. Once there, she slipped off her shoes and pinned the loose curls Mitsy had styled with such care into an inelegant pile on the top of her head. Careful to keep her skirt from getting wet, she stepped into the stream and let the water rush over feet. When she heard someone approaching, she looked over her shoulder to see who it was.

Once he realized there was going to be a quidditch match throughout the day, Wade made sure to take advantage of it. He had told Susan he would only play a few games, but after playing two in a row, he was starting to feel he could take on more. It had been years since he played against someone like this. Of course there were times that he played against his friend and had played here before with Marcus, but the competitive spark was surfacing once again. It had been years since he played as a keeper and without any other distractions, it felt as if this game was tailored to his talents. His hand wasn’t threatened by any bludgers or Weasleys this time. He touched back down on the ground, broom in hand. For once, he had put effort into fixing his hair but the wind had mussed it from the games he had just played.

“If you want to do two out of three we can,” Wade said with a grin and the confidence of someone who had just won against two others. “I’ll try to go easy on you this time, but no promises.”

Flora was trying to make sure she spoke to everyone in attendance who she needed to speak to, but one of the other guests she hadn’t seen yet was one of the few she actually wanted to see. She had a feeling she’d find Wade where the one of one quidditch games were taking place, so she made her way to the pitch, only to find the younger Avery already in the air. She waited for him to touch back down before approaching just in time to hear him suggesting yet another game to his opponent.

“Perhaps you should give some of the other guests a chance to play.” She interrupted with what was meant to be a lightly teasing jest, but ended up coming out a little more chiding mum-esque.

Anthony couldn’t even begin to fathom growing up anywhere with this much space. How did either of the brothers go from all of this to a Hogwarts dorm without having an existential crisis? He’d grown up in a two-bedroom apartment and going from that to sharing a room had been rough enough. All of this? They could fit Hogwarts in here and still have space for their dumb big house.

He had taken a break from the party to sit down by the legitimate river running through the property. To his absolute delight, there was a small group of ducklings down by the bank. It had taken a bit of doing but eventually he’d gotten a few to eat from his hands. Grinning ear-to-ear he stayed very still even as someone came up from behind him.

“Think I could get away with taking them home?” He asked, already considering putting one of the fluffy little birds in his pockets.

When Flora first arrived, she’d made a point of making the rounds and greeting her equals. She’d made small talk with the other purebloods in attendance to the best of her abilities, before finally allowing herself to retreat. She opted for exploring the grounds, enjoying the more natural areas of the park that were less manicured than the formal gardens. She made her way away from the more populated areas of the event until she caught a glimpse of Anthony through the trees. she approached slowly until she saw the ducklings gathered around him. She slowly settled on the ground a small way off, so as not to startled the tiny birds, and considered his question.

“I suppose you could, probably. But why would you need to?” She figured the ducks were perfectly happy here, on a quiet estate where they were likely to be left alone and had plenty of room to roam.

“I think all the stereotypes against blondes are quite unfair, if I’m being honest.” Octavia mused, taking a sip from her cup of coffee. She had always had dark brown hair and thought she looked great with it too, but she had felt like going through a change on the outside after all the changes that have happened in her life recently. The old engagement falling through, the new one, the death of her father, it was time to switch things up a little. Octavia thought she looked amazing with any hair color, not that she’d try it, but she’d look good with crazy colored hair as well, she was sure of it. “I am actually enjoying this new look. Have you thought about changing your look up?”

Flora didn’t have many friends, mostly because she didn’t see much in herself that was worth being friends with, but there were exceptions. Octavia Flint was one of them, a woman who seemed to see something in Flora that she herself did not. The two had known each other as girls, and remained close in that way women of their station did, more out of necessity than any innate similarities. Flora was certainly not made for the limelight the way Octavia was, neither as beautiful nor as vain, but she was possibly one of the few who knew there were hidden depths to Octavia. So Flora occasionally suffered through shallow conversations for the sake of something that could be called friendship. “I think the blonde suits you, but I’m not sure a new hair color would do much for me.”

All through school Marcus had never been one for girls. Girlfriends, girl space friends, girls of really any sort. They were distracting and often dim, especially the ones found around the social elitist class. Of course, there was Octavia, but she was his cousin, and nearly as close as a sister so she didn’t count in the same category with the rest of the overly ruffled birds that fluttered about. In school, girls had been a distraction, pulling his men from valuable training time and his friends away from their dinners to go, well go do whatever it is that young witches and wizards do in the dark corners of the castle, but Marcus had never been one for the investment that most females entailed. That’s not to say he’d never been with a woman before, on the contrary there were many a witch that had made their way into his private chambers, famous quidditch starlets and other ladies of equal status, but he never let them dally for long. He knew his mother wanted him married, and he knew marriage was expected of him as an heir to the Flint Estate, but the pressure and down-right absurdity of pureblood customs and rituals took nearly every appealing aspect away from the few things Marcus actually found remotely appealing regarding the opposite sex.

Unlike many pureblood heirs, he had never been betrothed or promised as a child, his parents choosing to forego the tradition on account of their own love. It was one of the memories Marcus held most dear about his childhood, his parents overwhelming love not only for each other but for him. His father and mother acknowledged they were lucky, not many purebloods were paired off in such a way that a love like theirs could develop, but it had and had made a considerable impression on him in regard to any sort of long lasting relationship. But nowadays, especially with his cousin lurking around the Estate more regularly, his mother pleaded for him to make a match to secure his title.

With almost a similar energy, although not nearly as tolerable as his dearest mother, was the Carrow girl. Flora.Owl after owl, letter after letter, run in after run in, he’d grown wary of seeing the girl and having to awkwardly bow out of whatever ‘arrangement’ she proposed on that given day for their possible potential union. He didn’t want marriage. Past her own persistence though, she seemed nice enough, and she genuinely intrigued Marcus with her stubborn willpower and rather to the point attitude. In a bid to offer an olive branch so to speak, and hopefully get her off of his back about engagements, he sent an owl to invite her for tea in the east sitting room. Overlooking the Estate’s apple orchard, it was one of the few places in the home Marcus still enjoyed spending time in. He’d just settled the place settings around the low table near the window when he heard the pop of the floo.

“Ms.Carrow, so happy you could join me. Please, let Yves take your coat…”

If there had ever been a part of her that was sentimental or romantic, Flora was sure it had died long ago. Now all that remained was cold, clear practicality, and this was what she relied on. She was a woman, and the head of a dying family with no true heir, and the only way for her to help that was through marriage. It was a topic she approached with the same detached pragmatism with which she approached everything. She had mental files and lists of all the heirs to Sacred 28 families, who was eligible, and who was not, who was available, and who was not, who might be amenable, and who would not. But the most important list was who she could respect, and who she could not.

She wasn’t sure love was real, she’d certainly never experienced any evidence of it herself, but even if it was she felt it was too high a star to reach for, but respect was crucial. Respect was something real and solid to build a marriage on, and she wouldn’t enter into an engagement with someone without some sort of foundation.

At the top of her list of who she could respect was Marcus Flint. He’d been forced into his role as head of the Flint family at a relatively young age, yet he’d handled the transition with aplomb. He ran his estate and various business dealings while also maintaining a quidditch career, an eccentric choice to be sure but not necessarily a bad one. More than anything, she admired how he was continuing his late father’s policy of remaining neutral on the issue of blood purity.

She’d assumed he would understand the precariousness of his position, a young and unmarried patriarch standing at odds to the rest of his family, and see that the easiest way to improve his standing would be to marry, and well, and quickly. She’d hoped that Octavia’s fondness for her would help her chances, but she seemed to have been wrong on both accounts. Marcus had thus far been resistant to all of her attempts to begin a productive conversation, and she’d almost given up entirely when she received his invitation.

She’d chosen to take it as a positive sign, and prepared for the day with a cautious amount of optimism. It was nice to be able to put on a pair of heels without worrying about seeming too tall, and Mitsy styled her hair in a cascade of graceful waves that almost made her feel pretty. She timed her departure perfectly, so she would arrive precisely on time. She spun out of the fire place into the east sitting room to find Marcus already waiting for her, which was no less than she’d expected. She smiled warmly at Marcus before handing her coat to the waiting elf, thanking it politely.

“I was pleased to receive your invitation, and glad to accept it.” She handed him an elegantly wrapped package. Hostess, or in this case host, gifts had fallen out of vogue somewhat, but Flora still believed they were a crucial part of a good first impression. For Marcus she’d chosen a set of custom dragonhide coasters, stamped with the Flint family crest, a practical yet personal gift.

a meeting of minds.

this morning, cyrus and celene had broke out into an argument. it was a common occurrence these days – she was used to it and there wasn’t much she could do.

a wave of relief washed over her when he left the manor as she was expecting someone today and she did not want him getting in the way. cyrus would just be a nuisance as he usually was. after deciding on a pair of jet black robes with a speckled golden pattern and leaving her hair down, celene put the kettle on while multitasking, waving ingredients of sugar and milk along with their finest dishware on the table that had its home in the middle of the garden. servings of jam donuts and treacle tart joined the surface.

celene had told flora to arrive by floo network so for now, she was waiting on the younger woman to join her. glancing at the time, celene noticed she was ahead of schedule by 15 minutes and set on her way of tidying up until flora would emerge from the fireplace.

Flora had been surprised and flattered to receive Celene’s invitation. She hadn’t thought herself important enough for anyone to notice, much less a woman as powerful and self-possessed as Celene Burke. Within the redeemers, she’d assumed she was little more than Hestia’s twin, tolerated only because Hestia was the kind of soldier they truly desired. Perhaps Celene was hoping that Hestia would also attend tea, but Flora would never do something so brash as include someone else in an invitation that had been extended to only her.

Still, she’d dressed with care, in deep blue robes that were simple, but expensive, and brought out her grey eyes, or so she’d been told. Her house elf, Mitsy, had pulled her hair back into a slick ponytail. It wasn’t necessarily a good look for Flora, but in her opinion there was little that could improve a face like hers, and at least like this her hair wouldn’t get in the way.

Just two minutes before she was to arrive, Flora gathered her hostess gift, a small bouquet of thistles and blood-red bud roses, and stepped into the fireplace. With a dusting of floo powder and a clearly enunciated, “Burke Manor,” she was on her way, and whirled out of the fireplace at exactly 3:30.
