I often think about how impossible it is for Chris and Cathy to ever potentially date anyone except each other, that’s truly the horror aspect of these books
Everyone knows that they’re siblings, EVERYONE, even Cathy’s other love interests, and yet all of those men know that they will never match up to Chris in Cathy’s eyes, even as she is actively trying to rebuke their relationship, Cathy can never truly love those men, not because of how horrible they are, not because they don’t please her, but because none of them will ever come close to understanding her as much as Chris does due to how closely tied they are, even Carrie is kept out of their special connection, despite also being their sibling, despite also having been locked up in the attic, because she just never experienced what they did, she just isn’t the same
The only way these two could ever potentially have partners that aren’t the other is if they were to SOMEHOW find a person who was also locked up in an attic by their crazy mother and grandmother and had relations with their siblings, but that just begs the question of…would even THAT work? They will always be too tied to their siblings that anyone other than them, despite their experiences, will never be enough
