“Hah!! Right! Those wizards! Always having their own quirks!”
Murmurs, whispers, voices. The truth and twist reached the Spire and its master's ears. Shadow Milk's interest and indifference swayed back and forth as he sat on his throne. The same old rumor, probably. But it kept his dough stiff and his sharp teeth gritting made it obvious to his minions how bothered he is as more time passes hearing such rumors.
“A wizard, huh?” he grumbled, hand tapping on the throne's handle.
“That'd be the news of the week, Master Shadow Milk!” Black Sapphire said, ignoring the tension in the room. “And it seems he did quite a feat here and there!”
“It's just a wizard… but Master Shadow Milk! Say a word and I will personally take care of that pebble bothering you!” Candy Apple added, eagerly, followed by laughter.
“No…” he said, silencing his minions. “No.”
Shadow Milk stood up from his seat, circulating the crystal orb that showed your image. Even a mere sight, his dough crinkled as if your true nature seeped in its glow. A little giggle echoed in the room that only made the uneasiness thick.
“I think I will personally meet this witch himself!” He smiled, teeth gritting. “Wouldn't it be an hooonor to meet the personification of deceit and liiiies of this world?”
Black Sapphire and Candy Apple halted, shocked at their master's words.
“A… witch, huh…?” Black Sapphire thoughtfully noted.
“A witch…” Candy Apple repeated. Her lips curving into a smile. “What do you think Master Shadow Milk has in reserve for him~? Oh, maybe turn his jam into syrup!”
“Pffft! Hah! Candy Apple Cookie! I'm sure our dear master has more creative plans than spreading jam everywhere!”
“Did you just say I'm lacking in the creative department!?”
“Well—”

“I'll be just right here!” You said to the group of cookies after excusing yourself to have a time alone.
It's been… what? Month now…? Since you came into this world. You have little recollection of who you were but you know who you are… One of those witches who, with their magic and knowledge, baked cookies but finding the reason why you're here gives you a headache.
While other cookies dubbed you as a formidable wizard, few who know your true identity were wary about you. A small group of cookies who, although doubtful at first, were nice enough to understand your trouble.
Such kind cookies, you may say. You were grateful to have met them. And the Cookieworld is truly wonderful. The blue sky, the greenery… It was like and unlike the world you came from. And the wind… the wind…
Your dough stiffened at its ominous breeze. You stared at the sky and then with a swift evocation from your scepter you casted a magic that sent a blast of force field, shattering part of the illusion attempting to trap you.
“Who's there!? Show yourself!!” You shouted, armed and ready.
Slow claps reverberate in the area, unifying in a space where a cookie materialized.
“Bravo! Bra-Vo!” he cheered. Smoke puffed revealing a cookie in a harlequin outfit. His light blue dough matches his monochromatic palette. “Tsk! I suppose I might have underestimated that little head of yours. But, hmp! To be able to see through my illusion and break it…? I'll give you that. I'll give you that…. I went easy on ya!””
You looked at him, puzzled and speechless. And he looked at you with a plastered grin until you hit him with a few words.
“Pardon the rudeness but who are you?”
His arms fell along with his smile. Eyes shocked. Head lowered absurdly low.
“Wh-What?” His expression quickly got replaced by indignation. “T'is is I! Shadow Milk! Master of Deceit and Illusions! The one and only! How can a witch not know?!”
“I… I may not remember…?”
“Like, not even a ‘wooooow!' or ‘gaaaaasp!’???”
“... famous… magician?”
“You could say that… have the schooool of witches reeeally never teached you anything about this world, dear witch? At all?”
“Umm… Not really that much- wait—!”
“Oohh! Oh! Those ignorants—! Okay. Okay. I don't blame you.” He paused, smacking his lips “Heh! Instead, what if I make it up to you? As an apology for my little trick from before! I've still got my scholar prowess!”
You raised an eyebrow at his offer. This cookie just made you curious when you realized he called you with your title. You were skeptical but you may already have an idea who it is…
“Meh. Nah.”
Shadow Milk gasped dramatically— “Meh-NAH-ah?!” — then became meek. “Really…? This offer of a lifetime…?”
“No,” you firmly repeated. “First! I did hear about you! You’re one of those Beast…”
“Aw! That is I~!”
“Second. You trapped me in your illusion!”
“And you shattered it– barely— congraaatzzz-Z! You passed the first test! You've got a lot of potential! And I can teach you more!” He boasted, making you question if he’s serious… (not)
“And third… why are you here…?”
At that question, you saw Shadow Milk briefly looking at you with eyes devoid of any emotions only to be replaced by a grin as he saw your longing gaze.
“Oh, wouldn’t you know?” His voice, first joyous, was replaced by a deep and cold tone. Eyes staring at you. Lips breaking into a small giggle that sent shivers into your dough. “Tell me, witch. Why are you here?”
“I… um….”
“Wasn’t having the world of cookies in your grasp enough that you want to meddle in this form? Do you even remember what witches do?” he smacked his lips, “Witch with no memories?”
Shadow Milk replied with other questions to yours which left you with a dry answer. Taken aback, the questions you pondered to yourself in those solitary moments came rushing back… Witches baked cookies… gave them life… but the horrors… the horrors… they were enough to make you want to shatter your very own dough.
“You… quiet…” the weight on your shoulder overlapped and you gripped your scepter as you felt your head throbbing in pain.
Shadow Milk titled his head, lips curling with a smirk of delight at the sight of the once defiant witch, now vulnerable at his mockery. He observed your face of conflicted emotions with amusement. Oh! How the mighty witch has fallen before his knees!
“Look at you, trembling like a scaaaared little lamb, my dear witch!” he suddenly threw his head backward rather dramatically, catching you off guard. “Is guilt eating you? Ahah!
You… you're not like us… no… you're someone who can't even remember why you’re trapped in that very own dough! From mighty, to bitty! Oh!” he tutted and sighed, troubled in deep thoughts.
You felt a whiplash left and right at his words of faux compassion. It was as if he was trying to understand you, tugging your feelings back and forth. You gripped your scepter tighter.
“What do you know!?” You said, voice faltering yet piercing through the wind. “What do YOU know about witches?! Or about me??? When I… I don't even remember who I was…
But – for your information— I LOVE this itty-bitty dough!” You shouted the last words catching the beast off guard.
“You love that… dough of yours..? What a pathetic choice of words…” he thought, pursing his lips in contemplation.
He looked at you up and down, reality falling short of his imagination. Shadow Milk would've never imagined… actually, yes he did. Many times. How the taste of victory and sweet satisfaction would be as he witnessed the downfall of the witches crumbling before him but now he felt a tug as he watched tears of pearls threatening to fall from the corner of your eyes. A fire still lingering in you.

You gripped your scepter and planted it on the ground for support to stand. Hesitant but determined, you wiped away your tears and took a deep breath to calm down. You made up your mind when you looked at the cookie looming above you.
“Shadow Milk…” You called. “I may not have been good in my previous life, that I would not know. But as for now all I want is to help the Cookieworld.
Those words of yours from before… Although this may not become a perfect world for everyone, I’ll bear the wrongdoings of the witches and extend my hands as far as I can!
I know not much about your past, or about those witches, but you count as one of the Cookieworld!”
“Help..? This world…? And how do you exactly plan to achieve this noble role, little witch?” He sneered, trying to brush of the lingering discomfort creeping in the brittles of his dough.
“I don’t know yet,” you replied without faltering. “But I know cookies who are brave and risk their lives for everyone! And it’s enough for me to have the courage to move onward!”
“And what??” he retorted with a mocking laughter. “OOH!! You’d like me to be friendly-dandy, ey??? I’d rather rrrroll down my head off this hill!” And as a proof that he meant it, his head popped off from his body and started juggling it. It caught you off guard making his laughter howl. “Tsk! What makes you think I need YOUR help?? Fixing this broken spirit and making it believe in the power of friendship! Oh, how magnificent! The script of the century!”
With a last threw, his head fell right back on his body but with a strangle angle. Swiftly he spinned his head until he halted it and – *CRICK! CRACK* — positioned it right. Your heart sank at his sharp words but remained resolute in front of the mock of your intention.
“Shadow Milk… I apologize if my words have offended you. I simply meant to be your… acquaintance. If you let me.” You spoke firmly and softly, threading your words.
“An acquaintance…? A naive witch like you? And what could you possibly offer me that I can’t get on my own?”
“Um… a witch…?” you replied, uncertain and without thought in its weight… but a response nonetheless.
“Hah…? HAHAHAHAHAH—!!! So you can turn me all soft and fluffy on the inside?! Puh-ahahah!!!”
“... Is that what you want?”
Shadow Milk’s laughter quickly died, caught off guard by your unexpected question. “Wha— want…? You– I– I was mocking you, you naive witch! Should I give you a lesson on sarcasm??”
“You suggested and I'm taking advice!”
“I. Won’t be. Your friend!”
“I said acquaintances—”
“—And wipe off that stupid smile before I make you so!”
When he lashed out, you noticed that you were, in fact, smiling. The fear is gone as you stand before the feared beast.
“I’m not gonna hear a speech of friendship and trust like those annoying cookies!”
“No! No… Not exactly my thing, you see…”
“... … No cliché long speech of right or wrong?”
“It’s… It’s too cringe… hearing out from me…”
It was then Shadow Milk's turn to crack a smirk at your words, letting out an involuntary chuckle at your words.
“Really really? No high-and-mighty speeches? Moral grandstanding? Just pure, honest… cringe?”
“Don’t… don’t make me…” you pouted.
“Or what? You’ll writhe in cringe again?” Shadow Milk let out a teasing laughter making your cheeks warm up than before and unable to look at him. “What’s wrong, dear witch? Cat got your tongue?”
“You could say you’ve wiped off the smile from my face.”
Shadow Milk smiled from ears-to-ears as you repeated his words from before.
“Look at you! Looook at you! Trying to catch up with the master's humor! All riled up! All flustered and cute!” Your head snapped to him and Shadow Milk realized the last words he said without realizing. He was, too, surprised at himself.
He coughed to compose himself followed by a ‘tsk’ to regain control of the situation that’s been a diverging plot long before. “Yyyyou're JUUUUUST so simple to toy with!”
“You just said I’m cute…” You, once again, repeated his words. His taunt flying above your head.
“Shut up—”
“I think you’re cute too!”
“Stop it! And stop that damn giggling!”
“IOh, come now! I thought we were bonding!”
Shadow Milk gritted his teeth through the smile, eyes hardened wide contrasting your now calm demeanor.
“You're pushing… all my buttons…” Shadow Milk tried to scowl but his plastered grin remained on his face. His thoughts are rampant. He tried to improvise to regain control of the situation. He did expect the usual moralistic speeches and would have preferred that than hearing you laughing. “You're insufferable…!”
“Well, if it makes you think about me all day, I suppose I shall be insufferable.”
“Why you…”
Shadow Milk gripped tightly his staff but before his already haywired mind could think of something you already stood up. With another tap of your wand on the ground, a spell blasted your surroundings shattering the remaining illusion around you.
“!!!”
“Shadow Milk, it was nice to meet you!” you said, “I'll be looking forward to our next meeting!”
“What???” Shadow Milk stared in disbelief as you completely shattered the illusion he created. But he did not care about that. Not now. “Come back here!!” He prepared to charge himself to take you back but when voices of other cookies called out for you he halted. You turned your back. He stayed, watching you walking away.
From afar you pointed in the direction where you’ve been. The young cookies exchanged puzzled glances, confused and curious as they failed to see anything other than a vast, empty meadow.
“Oh… umm…” you paused as they asked you questions. “There was a cotton sheep there… And we both rested while using I used its fluffy cotton as a pillow!”
The young cookies stifled into giggles.
“That’s so adorable!”
“I want to use one as a pillow too!”
“Well, technically, you are already using their cotton as a pillow-!”
“They are just cuddly and fluffy, aren’t they?” The ancient cookie came in next to you as the three young cookies talked with themselves. “That reminds me…” he started to tell a glimpse of his young days which attracted the youngsters who already dismissed your previous venture.
As you all made your way back in the kingdom, you stole a last glance over your shoulder. In the empty meadow lingered a shadowy memory you sure that happened, stirring a longing and promise of a future encounter.

He tapped his hand on the armthrone as he reminded of a long buried memory from the past that made his soul ache but when he saw your smile he pondered… The strange satisfaction budding in his chest is displayed on his smirk.
He may have fumbled in your meeting. His script went awry and off balance. But the next one… What entrance should he give to surprise you? What show will he play to entertain? You, a naive and gullible witch… A malleable dough that he is itching to mold in his arms.
Shadow Milk closed his eyes. His hum turns into a waltz as he imagines your dance.

There should totally be a movement called “Sleep in Public” where people defend their right to sleep on public property. Sleep in your cars. Sleep on benches. Sleep at the park. Just make it a mundane and regular part of life to see someone napping in the library. It would make it much harder to single out the homeless for harassment if everyone else is doing the same thing and much harder to argue that it’s a “threat to public safety” when it’s so clearly harmless.
