I wonder if there any ZaDr fanfics of Zim and Dib trying to babysit Prisoner 777’s kids… 👀
After Zim and Dib have a fight that leads to them separating, Zim builds an AI system based off of a brain scan he got of Dib. It accompanies him for several months in space getting into various adventures with him, and various dangerous situations that could have been avoided had the Ai's paranoia and excitement not gotten the better of it (what can I say? It, quite literally, takes after Dib).
Despite many alien allies and enemies telling him that his AI is defective and not working right, Zim refuses to "fix" it or scrap it and start over, no matter how much he's told to and how many Situations™ it ends up getting him into.
After all, it is working as intended.

hey there, fluffy! (hope you don't mind if i use that as a nick-name ><)
what would you think of an au where zim and dib have been rivals for almost a decade before finding out that the one time they gave in and spent a night together in high school ended up in zim becoming pregnant (maybe with dulce or another oc). zim keeps this a secret from dib for nearly five whole years before dib finally learns he has a daughter (purely from accident - i blame gir trying to sneak in baby clothes for the child's upcoming birthday when dib catches him).
he confronts zim, which opens up a lot of feelings between them especially ones of anger and frustration from dib not being able to even know about or see his own child, while zim still harbors shame and confusion about what happened that night, not knowing he could still get biologically pregnant.
while the two keep bickering on and on, and can't seem to meet eye to eye together on anything, the child comes out from a nap, blinking their eyes in confusion and wondering who is zimmy's new friend. dib seems a bit taken aback that the child doesn't seem to think of zim as a father, and zim also doesn't appear to have raised her like a proper dad would either.
eventually dib ends up losing almost all of his frustrations because he is overcome with a sudden urge to help take care of the girl (partly from guilt because he hadn't meant to knock zim up and leave them both on their own, and partly because a very messed up part of him is fascinated by the idea that the kid is half alien and half human both).
they agree to play-act as parents (ironically!) to help their child adjust so that they can be allowed to leave the house more often and have more of a real life, but while they are still argumentative and bitter over each other, they eventually start softening up whenever their child is around.
Fluffy! Omg!! A nickname!! Yay!! I'm so okay with that yes!
I love this idea of a passionate one night stand leading to consequences that Zim and Dib can never forget! Maybe they could have moved on from that night, pushed it to the back of their minds and focused instead on their feud with each other, brushed the incident off as a moment of weakness and nothing more.
Except that the evidence of what they did has manifested in the form of a child with undeniable proof of both of its parents. And despite how much Zim tries to hide her from Dib and the rest of humanity, he just can't. Damn it Gir! You just had to buy them clothes for their birthday didn't you? (-_-) (I'm honestly surprised he didn't eat the child before this point. Maybe because they're his master's smeets? Or maybe he tried to before and Zim stopped him before it got to far? Lol)
As for Dib's feelings of frustration and anger, I think they would be very valid and in character! Imagine not knowing you had a whole ass child that you didn't get to raise and watch grow, many people would be rightfully pissed at having that information withheld from them. That choice taken away! Especially those who have parental issues/abandonment issues, which Dib certainly has due to his own upbringing. It would further incense him to learn the truth so many years after his child was born.
On Zim's side, I can imagine there was a lot of confusion and shame like you described. Confusion regarding his body and the changes it was going through throughout the pregnancy. Shame regarding his actions and the fact that he wasn't aware of his own fertility and ability to get pregnant. Here he is, the supposed mightest Irken alive and he couldn't control himself for one night or even understand what his body was going through until it was already too late.
Not to mention the healthy dose of fear he must have been feeling as well! Like what does Zim know about pregnancy, birth, and smeet raising? What does he know about human smeet raising? Hybrid smeet raising?!? Yeah no , he must have felt hella stressed in this au (most likely worse than in Irken Empire Collapse AU because at least there he had Dib's help. Here he didn't). He was probably also very stressed regarding being found out by the Empire for fraternizing with the enemy and illegally reproducing. Oh that's not even taking into account the fear of being found out by the Earth Authorities! All of a sudden all of Dib's talk about dissecting him that he'd never really worried about, dial his anxiety up to 10 because while HE'S never had to fear much from those threats, he IS a trained soldier with experience under his belt, HIS SMEET ISN'T!! (Imagine this might be one of the reasons, if not the main reason, Zim never reached out to Dib regarding the pregnancy and the smeet, he was afraid of Dib turning on the both of them and revealing him to the authorities and being taking in to be experimented on/dissected. Oh the second Dib figures out Zim's reasoning for keeping the child hidden from him he's gonna feel sick)
I can totally see Zim completely failing Iin regards to raising his kid in a semi normal fashion, like I said, he doesn't really have much to go on when it comes to Irken raising their young, and human childrearing would probably just confuse him, so without someone (or even a basic instructions) to guide him he'd fail spectacularly (that is not to say he doesn't love them or want to protect them it just means he's not raising them in a very healthy and secure way that will lead to a healthy adjusted adult).
The smeet walking out and being confused by this stranger in their house with the adult that's taking care of them (Zimmy) is so freaking cute omg!!!
The two of them deciding to coparent after they both decide they care about their smeet and want what's best for it makes me wanna cry!! 。:゚(;´∩`;)゚:。
I think there is a level of guilt on both sides, Dib for not being able to contribute to raising his own kid after his own neglected childhood has shown him how important having a present parent is. Zim for taking away another person that could have loved and cared for his smeet when they very much needed it (and he could not provide an adequate amount of either of those things when he simply does not know how to).
Of course Dib's fascination with the paranormal and aliens would naturally steep into his view of his child. That's a child that literally represents his interests in a singular being (and he helped make them!).
I think the idea of them essentially fake dating to give their kid a nicer childhood than either of the two ever got and in the process softening up and falling in love is the cutest damn thing ever! You know their asses are whipped when their attempts at domesticity end up feeling too real. I'm just imagining the two of them settling in at the base after a school night where they had to help the smeet with their homework (not math or science because these two smart boys for sure made a smart scientifically inclined baby) and after going and finishing out the bedtime routine, they linger around each other talking to each other about their own day, despite the fact that they don't have to, that the agreement was to only put on a front of happy parents when the smeet is around. Otherwise they'll just tolerate each other when they're not around. But instead they find themselves enjoying being together when their child has already been put to bed, just talking and spending time together. Before they know it they're much closer than they have ever been before. But that's not a bad thing right? Getting along with the person you're coparenting with? Being friends won't hurt anyone. And nothing more will come from this!
When they find themselves in bed again (purely by accident!) one random night they'll think back to those thoughts and kinda regret them (liars)
@pinksugarpeach thanks so much for sending this ask in! I loved hearing your idea and giving my own input!
More Zim centric fics because everyone should be focused on Zim.

Zadr AU - State Enforced Mates
Okay so I've had this idea eating at my brain for a while now and I really want to share it.
So this au starts off as zade, morphs into Zadf, and then turns into Zadr. Basically Zim and Dib eventually reach a point where they actually figure out that the other isn't so bad. Zim still thinks humans are pathetic lower life forms and Dib still thinks Zim is evil and hellbent on dominatig the earth, but they both begrudgingly respect and admire the other for their tenacity, ingenuity, and ability to outwit/outsmart the other. Eventually as they begin spending time with each other outside of their fights and plots they begin to fall in love with each other. Dib realizes it at first and fights it but eventually gives into his feelings and confesses to Zim. Zim also has figured out his own feelings but is resisting giving in. He doesn't want to be in love with Dib, shockingly not for xenophobic or Irken supremacy reasons though, but because *dun dun dun* he already has a mate.(・o・)
I know shocker right?
In this AU the Irken race still reproduces sexually. They simply don't raise their own young. They have sex, produce an egg, and than ship it off to the smeeteries to finish off it's last cycle of fetal growth before being raised by smeetery computers and robots.
The Control Brains are in charge of selecting who gets to reproduce and with whom they are paired up with. Not every Irken is allowed to reproduce, they must first prove themselves by contributing to Irken society, which can come in a lot of different to forms. If you're a soldier it could be winning a big battle or winning several smaller one's in rapid succession. If you're say a diplomat, it could be securing an important alliance for the Irken Empire. An Irken guard, could be stopping a major prisoner from escaping, or catching an infiltrator and preventing them from sneaking in. For a scientist it could be contributing a major scientific advancement to the Irken Empire.
You see where I'm going with this? Yeah Zim got selected by the Control Brains to reproduce when he comes of age after he contributed multiple scientific advancements to the Empire (Now I don't know if this is canon or fanon but I've heard that Zim worked on the Massive when he worked in the Vortion Space Station, specifically the Massive's Bridge Cannon? Idk how true that is but for this AU it is true!). So once Zim finishes his work and it's tested by his superiors it goes down on his record as a major scientific achievement and due to that reason he's entered into the reproduction pool (though he isn't expected to actually contribute until he's older and sexually mature).
So Zim is considered and entered into the reproduction pool! The Control Brains take into consideration multiple factors when they do this, so despite the clear defects that Zim has, they ultimately decide that due to the fact Zim's defects are likely due to his Pak, that his genetic contributions (extremely high intelligence and creativity) count more and outweigh the cons of having a defective reproduce.
When an Irken enters into the reproduction pool their traits are carefully analyzed and considered before being paired up with another Irken. But the biggest deciding factor is the other Irkens that were entered at or around the same time.
So Zim was entered at around the same time an Irken Elite was being lauded for saving a campaign from complete and utter failure after his own commander fell in battle and he took over to finish the mission. Doing so earned him the right to enter into the reproduction pool. The thing is that while the campaign he saved technically succeeded, there was still some other factors, unrelated to him, that stretched out the campaign for longer than it usually would last. This however worked out perfectly in the eyes of the Control Brains because of the fact that Zim would not be ready to fulfill his duties for several more years. For that reason they were paired up together, for the fact that it was convenient for them to be.
Of course several things happen after this decison, Miyuki's death to the Infinite Energy Absorbing Blob Thingy, Zim's transfer from the Research and Science Division to the Military, his climb from mere cadet to Irken Elite to Invader in just a few years, and his destruction of Operation Impending Doom I and the Irken Capital and his subsequent banishment to FoodCourtia.
While you might think that Miyuki's death or the destruction of OIDI and the Irken Capitol would disqualify Zim from the reproduction pool you'd be wrong (again). Zim was ruled not responsible by the Control Brains for Miyuki's death. The cage the Blob was contained in wasn't secured correctly but upon review it was found that Zim hadn't been the one to put the Blob away last before presenting it to Miyuki. Ergo it was ruled a political assassination attempt, thereby justifying the severing of the Irken-Vortian Alliance and inclusion of Vort in OIDI and OIDII (was it actually an attempt at political assassination? Well...).
For the destruction of OIDI and the Irken Capital, it was deemed the fault of Zim's defects and Pak, still nothing that would compromise his ability to reproduce and hopefully produce highly intelligent Irkens for the next generation (with extra attention paid to Pak installation and maintenance to make sure they don't follow in their bearer's footsteps).
So Zim remains in the reproduction pool and will be expected to meet up with his state assigned mate when he turns 16 to produce more citizens for the Empire. It's about the only task the Control Brains/ the Empire has remaining for him. The only one he has yet to fail at. And he doesn't want to fail at it! At least, not until very recently. Not until he fell in love with an alien on a primitive planet, star systems away from the Empire and all of its territory. Where no one would know unless he told them
Basically, Zim is at a dilemma, he loves Dib, he really does! He wants to be with him! But by getting together with Dib, Zim is essentially throwing away his last chance at being considered useful to the Empire, and he doesn't want to do that! He'd be considered a useless and utter failure of an irken, if he did! To refuse his state assigned mate in favor of some alien outsider would be considered treason. He doesn't want that! He's not entirely sure he could if he wanted to! Being mated to an irken and selected to enter the reproduction pool is a heavy duty and honor. Not everyonw gets this chance after all! Zim would be very scared of the consequences of refusing to mate and reproduce and what they'd do to him, and most importantly Dib and Earth, if he were to do so!
That's not even mentioning what his mate would do. Most Irkens are far more obedient and dutiful than Zim is, as much as he would like to not acknowledge this, they do as they're told and would not be very forgiving towards those that stand in the way of their duties to the Empire (you need only look at Tak to see an example of what would happen if you do).
Basically this is an exploration of Zim's character and how he'd react to the idea of having to make a choice between the person who he's discovered he loves dearly (Dib) and the person who stands as his only hope/tie back to the Empire (Irken mate OC).
And then there's the "Enforced" part of this AU....which I shall get to later (◡ ω ◡)
Let's just say the Empire's about to get a lot less Irkens capable of reproducing, and they're gonna need all hands on deck to make sure they don't suddenly go extinct lol.

Your art of her is utter perfection! Not a mistake in sight I say!
Again I'm glad you like her and hope you enjoy seeing more of her!
Zadr Fanchild for Irken Empire Collapse AU
Okay so I've decided they're getting their own post because I cannot ramble about her in the main posts without severely derailing the conversation (also if I go off topic no I didn't).
Her name is Dulce! After the Spanish word for sweet/candy (I absolutely love the canon fact that the Membranes are Mexican-American and will be adding tidbits of it into the lore when I get the chance (^v^). Zim and Dib settled on the name upon noticing how closely her eye color resembled the classic Dulce De Leche cream used in many Mexican desserts (even though the color would later clear up and become more of a gold color that resembled Dib's own eyes, they'd still stick with it because of it being a common enough Spanish name while still honoring Zim's heritage) .
She was born in the fall in October some 6 months after Zim and Dib found out they were expecting (and just a few months after they officially got together).
The pregnancy was very hard on Zim because unlike a "normal" Irken pregnancy, which lasts 3 months btw, she lasted longer because she grew to almost the size of a human newborn. Had she been a normal human she would have been considered a preemie.
Fun fact: Normal Irken pregnancies always result in an egg that needs to be cared for by the bearer for another month before the smeet hatches. Unfortunately for Zim that was not the case for Dulce. She came out in what would best be described as a variation of the human amniotic sac that quickly burst open as soon as Dulce left the womb. (I mean at least she waited to leave. Would have been very uncomfortable for Zim if it has ruptured while still inside of him).
Dulce took a very large toll on Zim's body. Both because pregnancy is a naturally hard thing for Irkens to experience. But also because his Pak couldn't decide whether or not she was a threat or an actual part of Zim's body. When it finally settled for "Not a Threat" it began diverting nutrients and energy towards Dulce in a way that left Zim feeling in bad shape. Whereas typically the Pak functions to keep Zim working at peak capacity (insane super healing, immunity to most diseases, super fast reflexes, energy regulation so that Irkens don't need to sleep) yeah all that goes away as the Pak goes into overdrive to keep both Zim and Dulce alive and growing. For the last remaining month Zim straight up cannot use his Pak at all, not even his Pak legs (It is a very miserable time for him, even if he gets extra snacks from Dib as compensation to keep his energy up for the pregnancy). Even after pregnancy it took Zim a while to get back to "normal"
Zim's body naturally produces a very sweet subtle pheromone, but it increased dramatically during and after the pregnancy which was meant to help soothe Dulce while in the womb and after she was born. It is a very sweet fruity scent that smells like a native plant of irk that faintly resembles a mixture of apples, pears and pineapples.
After his pregnancy he still smelled like his own natural phermones but with a hint of a caramel scent to him (Courtesy of Dulce. Having smeets permanently alters an Irkens scent profile) Dulce smells primarily like caramel with a bit of Zim's fruity scent, as well as, surprisingly enough, cinnamon (Which she gets from Dib. Zim and Dib hypothesize that after the whole 10 Minutes to Doom incident Dib's genes changed just enough to be compatible with Zim that he could reproduce with him as well as produce his own pheromone). Thus, the caramel scent is Ducle's own unique scent that she imprinted onto Zim because he carried her for so long. So she smells like a mixture of herself, and her parents.
Dulce is the first "natural" irken born in hundreds of thousands of years (which means she has no Pak!). After the Irkens turned to cloning, having natural children and family units in general fell out of fashion. Sex also fell out of favor after a time. You'd think with cloning being the main way of reproducing sexual organs would be done away with (and you'd be partly right) but an incident in the Irkens past led to the reintroduction of sexual organs as a precautionary measure against extinction (I think I'll make a separate post about this later. I've given this a lot of thought if I'm being honest) Modern day Irkens can have sex and reproduce, they're just unaware of it because that information is suppressed and the acts highly discouraged by the Control Brains.
On a slightly sad note, while Zim loves Dulce very much, sometimes he feels detached from her because he's never had parental figures of his own nor does his species encourage family bonds. He often doesn't know how to react to certain situations involving raising her. It's like he has all of the anxieties and instincts of parenting but he's unable to trust himself enough to make the right decisions. Not having any information on natural smeet raising (much less a half human irken hybrid) also makes him doubt his decisions. For this reason he often turns to Dib to make the first move regarding decisions about her health and well being. If Dib's not around he'll take charge, in quite possibly the most incorrect way (but things turn out more or less okay each time).
Fun fact! She has a cousin named Diego! Gaz got together with a gamer guy in her last year of highschool. The relationship...did not end well. She got pregnant and gave birth after graduating highschool and cutting contact with her trash ex boyfriend. While Gaz is a much better mother in the current times, she really struggled in the beginning with a newborn, she suffered from post partum depression which made her already standoffish personality worse. Dib naturally stepped in to help his sister and Zim tagged along to help because he and Gaz had developed a genuine friendship and mutual respect for each other by this point. Helping take care of a human baby, while icky and gross to Zim at times, awakened Zim's parental instincts and opened him up to the idea of having children around in the future (it mildly helped him calm down from the stress of having his own when he found out he was pregnant). Zim and Diego have a close relationship due to the fact Zim was around a lot and took care of him as a baby. He was estatic when he was told he would be getting a cousin at age 4. He was the ring bearer at Dib and Zim's wedding while Dulce was the flower girl. The two cousins are very close thanks to their parents making an effort to be in each other's lives.
As of the current timeline of the AU, Dulce is almost 3! She's still just a baby who's likes and dislikes change depending on her mood (and she makes sure everyone knows it). That said she likes her Papa (Zim), Daddy (Dib), cousin Diego (6), and Aunt Gaz. Jury's still out on Grandpa Membrane (She doesn't like how loud he is).
Dulce likes the color purple (mostly because her Papa likes purple so much). She also likes the color white, specifically in gloves and boots (this is because when she was flower girl at Zim and Dib's wedding she saw Zim wearing white gloves and boots alongside his wedding dress and thought her papa looked "absolutely beautiful!" And is now obsessed with wearing them as well so she can be "just as beautiful as her papa!".
Zim is really fashionable in his clothing while still managing to be very conservative due to his Irken upbringing demanding that everything below the neck be covered (and sometimes depending on the occupation even the neck and half of the face) which means that Dulce for the most part also gets dressed very conservatively. That means for the most part almost all of her limbs are covered up (the only reason she's ever not fully covered up is when Dib decides to dress her).
She's a big fan of fashion and clothes thanks to Zim as well.
Alright if you've reached the end of this long bullet list than you've earned the right to see what she looks like (This is not my art, it's my friend's work that would prefer to remain anonymous)
Hi!! I'm glad you like her extended lore @pinksugarpeach! Also your idea for her tag is so much better than what I had I'm immediately adopting it lol!
I spent a good bit of time thinking about how I wanted Zim to feel about Dulce and ultimately settled on "it's complicated" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. You're right in that his cultural upbringing negatively impacts him raising her. He's torn between his natural instincts (Irkens were heavily focused on child rearing when they used to actually have them. Matter of fact the whole reason they are raised underground by computers and robots is because if adult Irkens ever saw an actual smeet in real life they'd immediately become protective of it and adopt it. in turn the smeet would imprint on them as parental figures) and how he was raised. He simultaneously adores her and is jealous of her. Both feelings terrify him so as a result he keep a certain emotional distance from her while still spoiling her endlessly. This is actually something I can see becoming an issue later on in the future when Dulce realizes how Zim treats her, especially in comparison to how he treats Diego (those two are very close and Zim almost sees him as his first child) and spoiler: her younger brother.
Dib also has his own issues as a parent due to the fact he was created as an experimental clone of Professor Membrane. He knows this and deeply resents it. He had a hard time accepting it once he was told the fact and grew even more resentful after he was ultimately declared a success by his dad when he finally chose to work at Membrane Labs for the job stability it provided him and his family. Something about being dismissed by his dad as a failure up until he finally fit the mold that his dad had in mind for him. Dismissing his interests and actual intelligence unless it fit PM's version of them. Yeah, this boy has never had a good parental figure to look up to and as a result he struggles to raise Dulce. But fortunately he is part of a species that does still raise its own young and has like parenting books that he can consult. Zim does not. So he's slightly better equipped at this parenting thing than Zim. Slightly.
Unplanned but Beloved Babies Gang! Dulce and Diego are living it up! Probably helps that their parents are actively trying to make sure they have better childhoods than they themselves got lol. But they're good they're Gucci! (✯ᴗ✯) Though I do imagine problems occuring later on between them when they're older.
As for your ideas on how she interacts with her peers and rules over them, honestly I like it! I'mma be honest, I haven't really given much thought to Dulce as she grows older aside from like her being very self assured, confident, bratty, but cute. I still have her stuck at baby/toddler age in my head. I knows she's confident and self assured because her parents, despite their short comings, have raised her with love and care. She knows she's loved and cherished deeply and that has affected her personality. Her brattiness though is very much a result of being irken lmao. She's very demanding and sassy but she does it with such a cute face she can get away it almost all the time. She's a little diva when she grows up I think. (also your idea of her laying claim to the playground as it's queen had me rolling laughing. Little dictator in the making lmao). Whether she's popular or not I've yet to decide (though it would be funny if she is popular to contrast with Dib and Zim's school experience and have them looking at each other panicked like "do you know what to do in this situation? No? okay") but I do agree that the other kids would view her as slightly different, "exotic" maybe as you suggested.
Your idea of Dib having to do double back and start working hard to convince everyone Zim and his daughter have always been normal, "what to do you mean that's weird that's not weird!" Lol. I have so many elaborate ideas about this part of this AU. Zim by this point has gained a better disguise and thus Dulce is good on that front but they both have particular mannerisms and ways of doing things that just slightly makes you squint at them funny. (I might write a ficlet in the future regarding this)
I'm glad you found her interesting! I've given her a lot of thought and I just really wanted to write about her (but to write about her I felt the need to get into Irken culture, reproduction, Diego and Gaz, and a bunch of other things yk?) I'm glad she's finally out there tho! Next up is Irken Empire Collapse AU part 3! (With maybe a side tour for another AU and an art piece of Dulce and Diego)
Edit: I fucked up I meant to reblog this with this being part being added on but I accidentally saved it to the original post. I would fix it but I'm on mobile right now. I might just leave it here (╥﹏╥)
Zadr is honestly a 10/10 pairing for the hilarity factor of their canon interactions being more unhinged than anyone shipping them romantically can come up with. Antis complain about the age gap and its like. It doesnt need an age gap to be weird even in we examine them from a platonic fashion.
Like ok so ep 1. at first you got this kid who finds an alien and freaks the alien out by being determined to catch him. Seems aight. Makes sense.
Then things rapidly get stranger because they both are somehow feeding off of eachothers mental illness. Like....You have Zim over here with 42 schmillion defects and you have Dib who is canonically mentally unwell and unmedicated and even his dad is calling him his poor insane son.
And they both just seem to be activating eachothers neurons to go apeshit + manic. They also hate each other and want to dissect and/or kill eachother. But they are definitely living their best life together somehow. But yes, If given the chance they would kill eachother.
Theres a volume where a girl declares they should become best friends cuz of how much they think about eachother and I s2g them teaming up Only to get rid of her was great. Like they seem to have vaguely considered it for .15 seconds and then they silently agree to beat her up
U freaks said nothing. U had a telepathic communication moment here.
Hell even the ship says something like
"Man if zim went and jumped off a cliff would u follow"
And dib is like trying to consider all the feasible reasons why zim would do that
So the ship is like "I hate you both. So much"
Irken Empire Collapse AU 2
Part 1 here
Okay so I wanted to talk about Zim's (and Dib's to an extent) perspective in this au. In Zim's eyes he was declared a defective Irken, exiled and banished by declaration of the Tallest and the Control Brains like 10 years ago. And now they've suddenly shown back up (with the whole ass Armada? oh he is not handling this well (┬┬﹏┬┬) )
After his banishment, he was left with no funds or technology that he didn't already have in his base at that time. His access codes and registrations were revoked. And he presumably became persona non grata on Irk and Irken space.
As a result of his banishment he grew hella depressed. Stuck on a miserable primitive planet with none of the luxuries of home (though admittedly really tasty snacks when he had the energy to go looking for one's safe enough for him to eat) so he just kinda... gave up on life?
That is until Dib (surprise) offered him a truce (and friendship to go along with it). Now Dib at the same time was going through his own shit at time (age 15/16). He had been officially ostracized from the Swollen Eyeball Network after one too many complaints against him sending in "false evidence" of alien life (it's real, they just don't believe him). Didn't help the few missions he was sent on by them ended up being busts and that were subsequently blamed on him. So, he was kicked out of his comfort hobby and as a result his grades dipped tremendously. His dad finally started paying more attention to him but not for the reasons that he would have liked. Instead, it was to lecture him about his grades (of which had always been pretty straight A's until that point in his life) and began seriously pushing him towards science and bringing him along with him to his lab to either A) work/volunteer in them or B) just study and do his schoolwork in a non-distracting environment.
It was pretty safe to say Dib was miserable at that point in his life. And he didn't even have Zim as a distraction as he had all but disappeared right before highschool began for unknown reasons. Dib was unable to find him no matter how hard he tried. That is until one night Dib caught sight of the Voot Cruiser arriving back in town after a several months absence.
Of course, Dib tracked the ship down because what else was an emotionally unsupported teen with no other comfort avenues available to him supposed to do? Yeah, no, ended up tracking that alien space menace down and readying himself for an exciting confrontation after being bored to tears for the past few months.
But instead of having an epic battle with his nemiss, Dib instead found the most white girl wasted Zim crying in a field about being an utter failure to his people who would have been better off being deactivated at his hatching. Dib of course, being an emotionally stunted teen so far out of his depth, just sat down and listened before awkwardly asking Zim where he'd been for the past several months and whether Dib had to be concerned about a potential new plot to take over the Earth. Instead of a new plan to take over the planet, he was treated to Zim's life story and an actual explanation for why he'd been gone for so long (Zim had gone off into space to salvage as much Irken tech left in the solar system and nearby star systems as he could find but most of it had already been deactivated and he had not been in an emotionally stable enough place to try and fix them so he'd just kept hopping from place to place until he'd eventually ran out of energy and decided to return to Earth).
After hearing about how the alien's leaders and people had treated Zim and his genuine enthusiasm to actually help them to the best of his, frankly destructive, capability, Dib was left feeling a sort of kinship with Zim and their similar fates (feeling abandoned and isolated from everyone and everything around them despite their eagerness to help/share) so much so that he offered Zim a place on Earth, which Zim accepted (primarily because he had no other choice but also because he was still hella depressed).
Thus began their tentative friendship that then blossomed into a relationship (after several misunderstandings, miscommunications and jealousy that I may or may not ever discuss).
Now to the part I've really been wanting to get to! The Smeet backstory ( •̀ ω •́ ).
So, Zim and Dib only became friends like halfway through freshmen year and don't begin dating until maybe senior year of college (it takes them a bit to get there but they do). Because of this they don't really actually sleep together until they properly get together. And them being stupid young adults they don't take any precautions (I mean understandable, they're two completely different species from completely different galaxies. Even if they happen to be sexually compatible that doesn't mean they can produce viable offspring. Unless perhaps Dib's DNA was left just a bit altered after the 10 Minutes to Doom incident with Irken DNA O.O ).
Yeah...yeah.
So boom! Little baby Smeet on the way! in their last semester of college haha (the struggle is real but because they're both determined to make this work, so they tough it out)
When they graduate Dib finds work in his Dad's labs (nepotism baby! it comes in handy! ~( ̄▽ ̄)~) And Zim takes some time after graduation to work independently on his projects to better Earth in preparation for raising a Smeet on the planet. Starting by creating devices to scrub the pollution from the water, soil, and air of their town and surrounding areas. By this point Zim has grown to care about the Earth a great deal but hasn't made any effort to truly help it. However, with the pregnancy comes an innate desire to better his environment for his future child and thus begins his campaign to make the Earth more hospitable, towards Irkens and humans alike).
Eventually Zim and Dib have their kid after quite the scary pregnancy and recovery period (I shall make a post about it...at a different time). And they are surprisingly happy...for a time yk.
Dib works in his Dad's labs in a pretty cushy, if boring, job with flexible hours due to being a parent (his coworkers are so jealous) and spends his time not at work with Zim and the smeet hunting cryptids (should they be doing that with a child in tow? No, no they should not. But they're not exactly the most competent parents around and they are young adults so stupidity is to be expected) On the rare occasion he helps Zim in his own personal work (Zim does his own research and experiments with funding from his previous inventions that he's patented and sold, and also occasionally partners up with Membrane Labs in order to get his inventions manufactured on a larger scale).
Two years pass and Zim by this point can say that he is genuininly happy with his life even if it's not something he would have ever envisioned for himself years ago.
And then the fucking Armada shows up. Because of course. it would be just his luck that it does.

Peak peak peak peak peak peak peak peak!! Gah you understand it!! (Also my apologies for not responding sooner. Tis been a hectic last few weeks)
Zim absolutely goes off his rocker to the point depressed teen Dib can only look on in concern like "you good?" (。ŏ﹏ŏ). As Zim is busy having the worst mental break of his life.
I like your two options!! In a way Zim does vary between the two in my au, but he quickly burns out before he can truly do any damage, though occasionally he has bursts of energy and motivations that leave him too quickly before he can use them to their fullest potential. In my head I'm thinking he's far too frantic about having his connection to the Collective cut and any ties back to Irk severed that he quickly spirals and goes chasing after any hint of Irken technology that he can find in an effort to use it to force the connection back on. Only to find that he can't manage it. His connection is gone, likely forever, and there's no going back for him anymore. The distance and space between Earth and Irken territory is too great for Zim to overcome quickly enough to make any difference, there is no chance to make any plea bargain or deal. By the time he reaches the Empire his sentence will have already spread throughout all of Irken space and its allies too. There would be no point in even going. As soon as he realizes this he basically collapse in on himself. He's tired, he's weak, and he has no energy to even try anymore. The best he's able to do is get himself back into his Voot and his Computer takes over from there and pilots him back to Earth, Zim doesn't fight it. When he arrives back on Earth he's ready to go, ready for everything to end. To turn himself over to the Earth authorities and let them do their sick experiments on him, it would make no difference to him. (Luckily for him Dib's not so interested in letting that happen). As Dib aims to teach Zim some self worth, Zim swings between still wanting to take over the Earth, realizing how fruitless of an endeavor it is, and absolutely letting himself go and pigging out on the couch while eating his favorite earth snacks and crying over movies that hit too close to home when it comes to his abandonment issues.
Hell yeah!! College Zadr!! It takes them like 8 years of friendship but they finally figure it out in their last semester of college lmao (I'm not gonna lie I did contemplate making them be in highschool because the idea of them being teen parents and being low-key judged for it sounds hilarious to me but the story doesn't quite work unless they're both established scientists and figures on Earth. Teen parents Zadr is a story for another time I think) You're absolutely right that these two are academic rivals! They're best friends but also still arch nemesis, they love and care for each other very much (even if they won't admit it) but they still are gonna compete against each other for whose branch of science and projects are more important/impactful/better than the other's. They began motivating each other by competing for the best grades and then going toe to toe on their science projects as the years went by. They end up becoming absolute science powerhouses just to compete with and impress the other lol (I can see the tears of pride in Professor Membrane's eyes right now).
I have one thing to say about the whoopsie baby...whoops ┐(‘~`;)┌. How were they supposed to know this would happen?!? (Really it only would have taken 1 piece of plastic and the baby would not even exist but these two were too horny to even bother lol) And about the absent mindedness of their parenting skills,,,you right. You are so right lmao. These two idiots became parents at the age of like 20-21 years. There's was never gonna be enough maturity in the two to responsibly raise a child. If I'm being honest that smeet is lucky to have survived its first two years at all. Neither of them had any idea what they were doing, partly because of the fact she's a hybrid, partly because neither of them were ever equipped to become parents (Zim's never had any of his own, Dib...might as well have never had any with how little time Professor Membrane was actually around). Fortunately enough for their daughter she turns out alright, maybe she has some weird traumas surrounding the most weirdest things but overall she ends up becoming quite the well rounded, confident, self assured, and responsible individual (as only deeply loved children can be). She probably goes into the sciences too (Dib's dad probably has a field day the first time she openly expresses an interest in science without having to be prompted). She would be so smart, so cute and dearly loved by her eccentric parents and family me thinks.

Irken Empire Collapse AU Part 2
Part 1 here
Okay so I wanted to talk about Zim's (and Dib's to an extent) perspective in this au.

Hi, I have a boyfriend who is small and cute and was trained by a military camp in a galaxy far, far away. He has a skin condition
Irken Empire Collapse AU Part 1
To piggyback off of my own post about wanting to see Irkens reaction to Zim's exile and subsequent discovery of happiness, I also have an au that takes that idea into account while also being... different. This au would also focus on Dib and Zim's relationship after they've gotten together and even! Had a kid together!
Little unnamed smeet my beloved. She doesn't have a name but I'm firmly of the idea that their first kid is a girl that looks astonishingly like Zim himself just with Dib's golden eyes (that has never been a color seen in Irkens before. Most common colors include pink and red, with green and orange following after them, and purple and blue being the rarest) Very Mary Sue like character design decision but I wanted her to have something of Dib's that immediately alerts people to the fact she's not quite as Irken as she seems upon first meeting
This au would follow the collapse of the Irken Empire after some great catastrophe ravages most of known space, but especially the space where the Irken Empire is located. Still haven't decided what the catastrophe is gonna be. Is it some new unknown species that is nigh unstoppable and wants to conquer and kill everything in sight? Some cosmic event like multiple tears in space or several supermassive black holes opening and swallowing up everything near it and leaving nothing behind? Some great big disease that's taking every alien species out regardless of how great and advanced they are? Some space zombie virus that's tearing through several star systems and bodies like a dog chews through chew toys? Idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What I do know is that it leaves the Irken Empire completely crippled. It's colonies and worlds have been destroyed/ravaged. Its allies scattered to the winds just like their enemies. Their world torn to shreds. Most of its civilian population is dead and gone. Alongside their production plants industries. Plus, their smeeteries to continue the next generation are also nothing more than rubble or simply rendered inoperable (this will be important later on). Most importantly, there's no place safe for the remaining survivors to go now that, what feels like, the rest of the universe is collapsing to this great big unknown threat. There's no recuperating what they've lost. Only fleeing with what they have on them to survive.
I imagine that the only huge chunk of the population that truly survives is the Massive and its fleet's crew. Or at least some of it. If the catastrophe ends up being another species or the space zombie virus than some of that fleet is definitely lost in battle. But because it is constantly on the move and never stays in one place it remains (relatively) intact.
So the remaining survivors flee the devastation behind them, maybe leave a few clues for those with Paks to be able to follow their path as they go so that any remaining survivors can find them.
And off they go! In the complete opposite direction to where they were heading when Operation Impending Doom II was still being conducted!
The thing is, they know they can't stay in known space. The threat is too big and quickly growing. Soon enough it's gonna reach what remains of the Irken Empire. And when it does, it will crush them and leave them as nothing more than a footnote in history (a pretty big one with the influence they've had on the wider universe but a footnote nonetheless). So they resolve to go far away. As far as they can manage. Somewhere so unknown and unexplored that they will (hopefully) never be found, or at least not be found until they've regained enough strength to fight back/combat against the threat currently trying its best to take them out.
They head for the star systems that Earth is located in.
At first they intend to completely steer away from where the "Defective Exile" was last spotted heading towards. But uh eventually they start running out of supplies and resources that can help them. There's less than 100,000 of them. But that's still a lot of people. And Irkens have to eat, like a lot. The taller one's even more than the smallers. Their Paks can sustain them for quite a long time, years even (especially if you're shorter. You take up less resources then, unlike tallers who HAVE to eat more unless they want their bodies to crumple in on themselves) But there's no resupply depots and then years pass and they are only able to eat away at their snacks with no hope of resupplying
When their last snack reserves hit dangerous levels they eventually shrug off their last bits of pride and look at the notes that Zim sent to the Massive's systems when he was still reporting to the Tallest while on his "mission" out in this desolate star system. In the hopes of the reports having something about where to find food or snack equivalents. Only for surprise! There to be nothing because this is the backwaters with very little to no civilization or even life. Seriously it's so dead out here that it's no surprise the native inhabitants of the planet Zim found is convinced there's no intelligent life outside of themselves.
Hmm...that would leave the only place capable of supplying them with food/snacks to be the very planet that Zim disappeared to ages ago.
They're gonna have to contact him, aren't they? (╥﹏╥)
And so they do. Very reluctantly, with tight spooches and clenched teeth. The Tallest make the first ever call to Zim that they have ever made (before it was always Zim calling them. Oh, how the turn tables). The call rings, and rings,...and rings. And then...nothing. Nobody ever answers. The line appears dead. If it weren't for the fact that the ship detected a receiver to receive the signal, they would have concluded that it was gone.
The Tallest are very angry but also downright terrified at the fact that Zim has not answered them. Angry because how dare this defective not answer their call (let's forget about how he doesn't have an obligation to do so after being exiled from the Empire. They're just going to conveniently ignore that part) and terrified because if they don't find him and the supplies that come with him soon, they're all going to starve and die.
So they continue calling. on and on for several days as their finest minds comb their brains over for different ways to try and contact Zim in time for them to receive help. And though it takes them a while they finally figure out a way to automatically turn on the monitor itself when they next call. Of course, as expected, when they manage to finally connect, there is no one there to greet them. But the connection does send coordinates back to the Massive of where the monitor and base is located and allows them to carve a flight path back to it. And hopefully to the planet Zim is on.
So the Massive naturally discovers the Earth's location very easily now that they have the coordinates. As soon as they're within range they also pickup various signals from Irken and Irken adjacent, technology. There are multiple satellites and small bases that they come upon as they grow closer and closer to Earth which gives them hope that they're heading in the right direction (because who else would have built these bases but Zim?). They also pick up some "Urth Snacks" left as provisions in the small bases that they come across. Most of them taste very good and help replenish the energy of the Irkens that consume them at an astonishingly fast rate (though some of the snacks also cause great harm to those that eat them. they take note of those and advise that people stay away from them) So the Irkens grow very hopeful about the situation now that they're fairly sure they won't starve as long as they make it to "Urth" soon.
And then they arrive. The Massive and the whole armada with it. Much to Zim's horror.
This is getting long so I'm gonna make a part 2.
Part 2 up now here
Zim's Exile AU
While I am a personal fan of fics where Zim is told his mission is fake and he's officially exiled/banished from the Irken Empire, can't come back unless he wants to be shot on sight, and thus has to settle for creating and living an actual satisfying life on Earth (with Zadr getting together over time obviously) I'd like to see what the Tallest (and the rest of the Empire) think of Zim's life after he leaves them.
Like obviously they're glad he's gone and can't ever bother them again. He's settled in essentially the most remote unknown span of space that the rest of the universe won't even touch with a ten foot pole. And seems to be content staying on an uncivilized pre contact basically pre space flight planet with an equally uncivilized and unknown species that are too dumb or primitive to understand there is life aside from themselves in the universe.
I want Zim to find a satisfying and happy life together with his loved one's on Earth and genuinely be the only Irken in existence that is actually legitimately HAPPY! While most other Irkens are merely content and or stagnating (if not actually outright miserable in the case of the smallers/shorters) Zim is thriving!! He no longer has to adhere to the rules of Irken society, hold himself apart and above other alien species, and is free to connect with and build genuine relationships with those around him. He is finally free from the shackles of his society and it is quite frankly the best thing that has ever happened to him.
And all he had to do was be exiled and never allowed back into his old home/culture. It's a good deal in his mind, considering how toxic and unhappy a place and people it is, even if sometimes he gets lonely without other Irkens around. But he was already used to being isolated from his people after the numerous disasters he's caused. And now he has a family of humans to be there for him when he gets lonely!
But what I want to see more of is the reaction that such a scenario elicits from other Irkens and, specifically, the Tallest. Here is this defective Irken that has created untold amounts of destruction to their own people, who's slipped out of punishment and receiving the consequences to his own actions time and time again, who's quite frankly terrifying and infuriating to be around all while still being super-duper loyal to their Empire and adamant about the superiority of their species, fucking finally getting his comeuppance and being exiled from their people and space, never to be a bother/danger to them again.
And this should be the end of him right? He's gone, he's not coming back, he's never going to know what fitting in is like ever again (not that he ever did with how defective he is) as he wanders the edges of known space like a scuttling lower life form (because he won't be accepted in non Irken space either with how hated their species is outside of their Empire because of their conquering, enslaving ways, so the only place that will even mildly accept him is the absolute dredges of space, the edges where no one but the worst and most pitiful creatures will wander in) so he'll suffer for the rest of his miserable short life. No doubt killed by enemies of the Irken Empire for simply being Irken even though he's just some exile with no power or weight to him aside from his own (admittedly fearsome) reputation.
And then, then!! The Exile has the absolute nerve, to thrive outside of the Empire! To fit in among some lower species and find, ugh, "happiness" there. (They're not jealous, they're not!)
To top it off, Zim is actually benefitting and advancing this lower species with his own creations and scientific prowess! Something he was only mildly successful at doing for the Empire, with most of the time his inventions leading to disasters with consequences such as the death of two of their previous leaders.
(Yes I headcanon that if Zim were to leave the Empire and stay on Earth he'd naturally gravitate towards science and inventing. Look at him and tell me he doesn't miss his science research days on station 13! This little bug loves science and creating with all his soul and if it hadn't been for that little blob incident he would have remained in scientific research till the end of his days.)
And then he goes and shames all of Irkenkind and lowers himself further by connecting and mating with a member of that species. Helping them along their journey towards becoming civilized is almost permissible (the glory, fame, and adulation from a lesser species for helping them is a poor substitution for the same from Irkenkind but with no other option left they can see why he'd do it) but actively assimilating and lowering himself by tying himself to their species through something as primitive as mating to one of them and marrying them?!? Oh, hell no! Not allowed! (Especially when it's clear that it makes him so unbelievably happy to be in his mate's presence)
In the end I want the rest of the irkens to be absolutely seething at the idea of Zim becoming happy AWAY from the Empire (What with the fact that he's a terrorist and most hated irken in the Empire) But also low-key curious and terrified. Because clearly Zim doesn't need to be among them to find fulfillment. So, what does that mean for the rest of them? Can they be happy too if they allowed themselves to be vulnerable and open with each other? If they let others in?
Of course some will chalk it up to him simply being defective. That it's only due to how wrong and messed up he is that he can allow these things to happen to him and find happiness in it. (But they'll always wonder if perhaps maybe they too could find happiness like Zim has...)
And maybe I also want some Irkens (Red and Purple) to feel so jealous and envious that they straight up send assassins to try and either kill Zim or his loved one's so that he's left with nothing all over again. To remind him that although they are free of him, he will never be free of them. That they have full control over the situation and his life if they so please.
And I want Zim to retaliate hard at this threat, cause let's face it, if the Empire managed to lay one stupid claw on Dib (or any of the other humans Zim has grown fond of) he's coming after their asses and finishing what he started. Destroying and crushing his people entirely into dust this time.
It would be cool to see is all. To read a fic that follows the Irkens side of things of Zim's exile and their reaction to his subsequent discovery of happiness. And then the end of their civilization as they know it because they pissed him all the way off by daring to come after him and his loved ones after he's finally decided he wants nothing to do with them.
This is mostly just an excuse for the Irkens to be jealous of all that Zim has compared to themselves and for Zim to be happy.
@pinksugarpeach okay but when i say you get. YOU ACTUALLY GET IT!!! Zim is both everything the Irkens want in a citizen while being an absolute disaster fail and he doesn't even know it! (okay maybe he knowns it a little but is in deep denial but i'll explore that at a different time) He's too much, all the time, and somehow always doing it wrong. so yes he gets left behind like yesterday's trash but it's okay because that's where he'll find true happiness (away from them)
the irken empire's society does not like their outliers or anything that doesn't fit in at all! And Zim unfortunately falls into that category really easily. they like things a certain way and when you can't accomplish your (their) goals in the exact way they want it. they will get rid of you. either through reencoding, existence evaluations, or whatever other way is most convenient for them. (in Zim's case exile) but what they didn't take into account is like in most cults (because their society very much gives off cult like vibes) once someone escapes and is in a safe enough environment, they can unlearn all that has been shoved down their throat. the cult, its superiority, and their inherent value as a person inside the system.
Zim, once free, has the option to finally THINK for himself and think over all the lessons he's learned back home and realize "hey this thinking kinda sucks" especially while surrounded by outside influences that very much want better for him and his self worth (Dib). And Dib would be very invested in making sure post exile Zim finds some inherent worth outside of being a part of a species hellbent on taking over the rest of the known universe. because yk now he's stuck with Zim permanently and if Zim decides "fuck it might as well kill myself and earth while i'm at it" that would be very bad. so i see Dib slowly but surely convincing Zim that life outside of the Empire can be very nice and worth living actually, specifically here on Earth can also be nice (pls don't blow it up) and together them discovering themselves and their own self esteem rising as they do. and by the end they both realize "hey life ain't so bad and we can both make the best of it with what we have here on Earth if we just...try"
ugh them learning and growing together in their last few years of childhood/adolescence, falling in love with each other, and firmly respecting each other by the end of it, both the person they met and battled against as enemies when they first met but also this new person they've discovered together...goodness they make me wanna cry.
idk how to end this other than fuck the irken empire they never deserved Zim and Dib is very glad to keep their rejected wet cat and give it a home with him.
