Hey I've never read a Warhammer book before and after I stumbled on your blog I figured you'd know the best place to start.
Warhammer books vary in subject, tone, and author quite frequently, but you can start almost anywhere! Here are some i’ve enjoyed over the years!
Flesh and Steel: Noir detective investigating a series of murders by servitors occurring in the depths of a hive city on a backwater world. Unprecedented look at the lower rungs of the Imperium and its government, and two really compelling lead characters
Soul Hunter: Talos of the Night Lords is one of many chaos space marines fighting to survive in his warband and the wider politics of the factions who have turned from the imperium. This series is a fantastic snapshot of the grimdark future as written in the 2000s, incredible character writing, well developed story arcs, unrivaled capture of the atmosphere of what it’s like to be a reaver of an empire that has taken 10,000 years to die.
The Great Work: Belisarius Cawl is a man on a mission to a world scoured of life by Tyranids, seeking something to assist his quest to seal the Great Rift across the stars. Cawl is a delightful character, both on his own and for his interactions with other characters. He’s sarcastic and witty and a bit of an asshole depending on who you ask but i love him and the books featuring him are lovely.
Day of Ascension: Have you ever seen a genestealer cult uprising? Would you like to? Davian is a rising voice in her cult’s alien hierarchy, advocating ceaselessly to overthrow the iron grip of the planet’s Mechanicus overlords. And they certainly do need overthrowing, as one mistreated genetor Triskelion will immediately agree, but in the chaos of a revolution it’s always hard to tell who will triumph until the very last moment.
Lords of Silence: Numerous very stinky men go through so much bullshit trying to get back to their gardening. Every character is a home run, the atmosphere is lovingly described, the culture and behaviors are well thought out and grounded. One of my top 3 fave books of this entire universe.
Carrion Throne: A glimpse into the workings of the Inquisition in the lead up to the opening of the Great Rift. Crowl, Spinoza, and their retinue are inquisitors on Terra, hunting down a spoor of heresy that will lead them to the foot of the golden throne itself. Compelling story, incredible character development, unrivaled view of life on Terra in all its highs and lows, both sequels are equally amazing.
Primogenitor: Fabius Bile is a maker of monsters, and a servant of no one. He will backstab, betray, outmaneuver, and kill whoever he has to for the good of his creations. He’s a wretched mad scientist and the amount of creativity that got poured into this book is amazing, absolute shame that Josh Reynolds left after he finished this trilogy, go read this.
Ahriman: Omnibus: Ok so this is actually the first 3 books of a pentology (5 books) but they’re really good. It details Ahriman’s rise from the dregs of the traitor ranks after his exile, to leader of a war and prepared to challenge the defenses of the Planet of Sorcerers in his quest to reanimate the brothers that he failed to save long ago. Great story, great magic, great characters, singlehandedly got me to buy and paint Ahriman in the style of the book cover.
My colleagues might have other suggestions, Infinite and Divine, and Twice Dead King both have my seal of approval (though i’m overdue to read them myself). Dark Imperium is also a great look at the current developing story of 40k. Anything by Dan Abnett is a 50:50 shot, i myself am not much of a fan but other ppl adore his work, so keep in mind that your mileage there may vary. Good luck, i hope you find something you enjoy!
