it is kinda crazy seeing people claim that removing Youske's homophobic lines will make his character boring. like if him being homophobic was all that was fun about his character maybe theres a problem. haven't played the base game so I don't know but this isnt really a great introduction to his character.

Before anyone gets mad at me for what I’m about to say, just remember that I’ve translated and posted multiple souyo doujinshi (on my alt) so I have credentials.

But anyway, as someone who has played the game, I’ve been saying this! People are getting mad about a character arc that isn’t in the game being removed.

The romance route was cut, and even if there were a romance route present, it’s optional so an internalized homophobia arc wouldn’t have been particularly well executed in the first place (since anyone not going for it would be subjected to normal, non-internalized homophobia). Not to mention that I’m pretty sure you can actually rank 10 him before his worst scene with Kanji anyway? I may be wrong though, and someone should correct me if I am. I’d also like to mention that, in that scene with Kanji, you’re meant to agree with Yosuke. Maybe think he’s overreacting and being unfair at worst, but both the anime and manga have the protagonist explicitly on Yosuke’s side. For people who supposedly love the game so much, they don’t seem to actually understand that Yosuke’s role in the story is as a player mouthpiece far more than it is to be the butt-monkey.

People being so angry over them making changes that make a character meant to speak for you more likable is genuinely beyond me. It’s not even period accurate because it’s pretty bad even by 2011 standards. Hell, it’s bad by 2008 standards.

Also, to OP, Yosuke really does have a lot more going for him. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but even if you assume internalized homophobia is a deeply important part of his character and arc, it doesn’t even crack the top three most interesting things about him. The real most interesting Yosuke trait is how smart he is despite how emotional he is. I think people sometimes read him as a bit stupid but if there’s one thing the game does well, it’s demonstrate how smart and perceptive he is without sacrificing his tendency to be overdramatic and emotional and even a bit bitchy. I could write essays on this. It makes me sad how little it gets discussed.

call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support

and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?
