After Dustin found out Steves idea of celebrating Christmas was eating deep-frozen pizza and drinking a whole bottle of coke while watching sloppy Christmas movies, he felt sorry for him. “But what about the Christmas spirit? celebrating with family, the presents, one night no worries?” Steve explained his parents just gave him a crazy expensive gift and hired a nanny to keep on eye on him while they enjoyed a fancy Christmas dinner for two in the most expensive place Hawkins had to offer. Until three Christmas’s ago they decided he was old enough the celebrate Christmas alone.
“STEVE! You’re ringing my doorbell punctually at seven o'clock in the evening!” Dustin exclaimed, he couldn’t even imagine how Steve would have felt. “Dustin, you don’t have to do this,” Steve parked his car at Dustins house. “You’re my friend, more than that you’re family, wear a suit,” Dustin winked before running to his house.
Steve nervously rang the doorbell, he was happy that he had a family to spend Christmas with but unhappy it wasn’t his own. “Steve, dear come in,” Claudia Henderson smiled warmly at him. “Merry Christmas, Mrs Henderson, you look wonderful,” he handed the flower bouquet to her. “Oh, they’re beautiful and please say, Claudia, tonight.” Steve walked into his second home to be greeted by around another ten smiles.
For the first time, Steve felt really loved, not just because they had to. They laughed, shared story’s and played games. Yet that empty feeling in his stomach couldn't be filled up by the delicious Christmas dinner that Claudia had prepared.
he stood up and shouted, “Christmas really Sucks!” Steve had a few drinks and his mouth was working faster than his brain. the whole room went quiet. he felt guilty, he ruined their perfect Christmas just because he never had one. “I’m sorry!” He whispered as tears welled up in his eyes.
he locked himself up in his car banging his head against his wheel. tears rolled down his cheeks and he wished he just had stayed at home, he ended up any other way, alone. he looked up to see Dustin pull the door handle. “please, Steve let me in!” He whined.
Steve unlocked the car and looked out the window, every house was decorated with Christmas lights, his father hadn’t even bothered to get a Christmas tree. “Mom told everyone why you reacted like that, they understand.” Dustin looked at Steve, hoping he would get a look back. “I know it’s really shitty you don’t get the Christmas you deserve.” Dustin sighed. “When my dad left I didn’t feel like Christmas too but then I remembered how it felt like and I coudn’ t miss it. because something is ruined that doesn’t mean you can’t build it up back again.”
“Thanks for not kicking me out after I told everyone Christmas sucks.” Steve thankfully smiled at Dustin. he held out his and Dustin grabbed it. A little nod was shared and they walked back in.
That night Dustin and Claudia swore Steve never had to celebrate Christmas ever alone.
