of the same name (link here). It was 4 months of hard
work for @theashemarie, @katiemonz, @squidthusiast, and me.
We are very pleased to share Part One of this labor of love with you.

It's a whole different experience trying to adapt a written work to comic format, and I took a few liberties here and there with certain scenes. I'm very thankful that my friends stepped in to help with this massive project, they helped so much and are so talented! Please give them a follow, look at their work, leave comments and tags, let them know how much you like their stuff.
Ashe, obviously, handled the bulk of the writing and the alt-text, and offered insight on the parts that were changed by me. Katie is the one responsible for the shading and flats, and helped keep my and from being injured. She also offered a lot of feedback for the paneling and layout, being a comic veteran herself. Rory is in charge of anything that is colored, so the cover and the three colored spreads were his doing. Just fucking exceptional work from all of them. I handled the sketching, lining, and layout as well as the rewriting of one scene.
We are already starting work on part two, but we are also all working adults and these things take time. Hoping to get part two out sometime this yearā¦ Either way, thanks for reading and have a kind day!

OK look at the inkling eye mask. I thought they were like a thin singular black line, but on closer inspection they have this crinkly almost cracked looking texture. I'm imagine it feeling very dry and almost rough.
i find it interesting that eye masks in humanoid form look kind of scaly, yet the masks in swim form... Don't.
Hm...
I headcanon eye masks serve some biological function as they shapeshift between 2 forms. eyes are delicate organs, so maybe the mask protects them.
contrary to popular fan depictions, the swim forms are not small, but close to the same size as humanoid form. and yet the eyes are huge in swim form. my thinking is something like... The eye mask in humanoid form is actually looser, dry skin. the eyes get engorged with ink when in squid form, hydrating and smoothing out the skin under the eyes.
Now I've had this headcanon for a long but i didn't think it had too much basis beyond the artwork, until a friend pointed out to me...the freaky inkling transformation that was scrapped from the final game
the old version of the transformation clearly shows off the inklings huge eyes in squid form shrinking and setting into place onto the humanoid form.
and then in this artwork too...
you can see ink draining from the eyes mid transformation!
and even in the final game too, you can see the ink bursting from the eyes during transformation.
the high resolution artwork of inklings in humanoid form have consistently had these rough eye masks, even in early splatoon 1 renders (which you can see in the original post). This gotta be intentional.

Strap in, because this is a long post. I placed it below the cut because of this.
An inkling's bipedal anatomy is extremely different from most sapient invertebrates; even amongst fellow mollusks. They possess a total of 10 limbs, though only four of them are actually functional.
The others are located on the head, and are used both for display (they're covered in a large density of chromatophores, iridiphores, and photophores) and fat storage. They've lost almost all of their muscle mass and nerves, and cannot be moved.
At the tips of their fingers and does they posses chitinous hooks, often called claws, which are sharp, hooked structures mainly intended for gripping. These hooks are normally sheathed within the hook slits, where they can be extended at the pressurization of a small sac that sits just behind it in the fingertip.
Near the heel of the foot is a larger toe, which is called the spur toe. Within this toe is a particularly large, sharp hook, which is used mainly for fighting instead of gripping.
An inkling's preferred method of fighting is to grip their opponent with their front hooks, and then slice with their spur hook and bite with their beak.
The internal anatomy, though with stranger positioning due to the unique shape, is quite similar to most mollusks.
Arguably, the most important organ is the brain. The inkling brain is enclosed in a cartilaginous head capsule and includes two large optic lobes. This is because vision is very important to Inklings. Up to 65 per cent of the brain is devoted to processing visual information.
Within their brain are two statoliths. EachĀ statolithĀ is aĀ small calcareous structureĀ which sits within a chamber called a statocyst. As the little bone moves around within the chamber according to gravity, the squid can work out which way is up, always allowing them to instinctively know which direction they're facing, even when falling. This is what allows squids to consistently land on their feet while superjumping.
Arguably the second most important is the ink sac. This is a large organ, over 7 times the volume of the stomach. The entire sac is lined with small ink glands, which produce ink and various pigments. These cells fill up, and once full, empty into the ink sac.
Ink is expelled through a tube that leads to the back of the neck, where there is a ruffle of skin called the ink gills.
There's also four other tubes that lead to a bunch of long, pressurized structures called atramentosses, or ink bones. The term "ink bone" or "boink" should not be misconstrued, as they're not actually made of bone, or solid at all.
However, the pressurized tubes instead provide muscle attachments and structural support similar to bones. These tubes are segmented, because they are pressurized so heavily that they cannot bend well, and if these joints didn't exist, limbs would not be able to bend.
These joints also prevent the entire inkling from depressurizing if one is punctured in an injury.
Inklings also posses a twin pair of lungs, which are lined with internal filaments resembling gills, and are extremely powerful. They're nearly twice as good at processing oxygen as a crustacean's lungs.
Between them, they have three hearts. The branchial hearts pump blood to the lungs, where oxygen is taken up. Blood then flows to the systemic heart, where it is pumped to the rest of the body. The systemic heart is made of three chambers: a lower ventricle and two upper auricles.
Beneath those is the digestive system. The squid's stomach is a small sac that connects to the stomach pouch or caecum. Digestion of food begins in the stomach. TheĀ caecumĀ also performs some digestion and is the primary site of absorption of nutrients. Enzymes from the liver and pancreas help digestion.
Waste passes into the large intestine, a thick tube adjacent to the stomach pouch, then to the small intestine, and then empties into the rectum. The end of the digestive system is the anus, from which waste exits. Inklings are extremely efficient for carnivores, and absorb nutrients at a much higher rate than other species.
Finally, beneath that is the pouch and reproductive system, located near the bladder. The pouch is used to carry eggs, and the rest of the reproductive system varies between sexes.

Sheldon: I don't think he'd let me because he cares about his job too much. Most of the weapons are pretty big so I'd have to sneak out of the training room with one. I don't think he'd call the cops but he's also so tired of no one listening to him he would probably just stop me himself if I tried to ignore him when he told me to stop.
Annie: She'd notice but her social anxiety means she can't stop me. She wants to but has no idea how to approach the situation and ends up crying later. Easy to do because the fish can't stop me but I guess I might feel bad. She took her business online anyway so this can't happen anymore.
Crusty Sean: He's too much of a big brother type to let me get away with that. He'd very firmly tell me to put back the shoes but not in an overly aggressive way.
Jel(onzo/fonzo/la fleur): I put them together because I think the jelly's are a hive mind. Anyway the S3 guy has on sight security to shoot me on sight if I even look at the door while trying on a shirt.
Flow: depending on what it is she might just look the other way. Kids, y'know? Just don't make a habit of it. She's possibly on something. Very new age. She seems like she sells crystals. That's not even related I just wanted to say it.
Bisk: This guy kinda looks like a bro but in an obnoxious kinda unlikeable way. He's pretty cool though and so long as it's just some cheap slip-ons he probably wouldn't notice.
Gnarly Eddy: This dude is literally high as hell. You think he even knows I made a purchase? Absolutely would let me steal.
Mr. Coco: He would be very disappointed in me if I tried but also I think he would be supportive of my assumed financial situation. He'd offer me part time work or help my find a job elsewhere. He wouldn't let me shoplift because he wants to see me be my best self.
I started ripping some of the games music I liked for myself but decided to do the enitre OST since honestly every track is a banger and I almost ripped the entire thing anyways at this point lol
I uploaded all of it on my Google Drive now so feel free to download!
For the procedure, I converted the in-game audio to wav which I then amplified as much as possible without clipping, since the audio is very low in the original files. For multichannel audio files I edited them into seperate tracks or mixed them together.
For example: The Hero Mode level music has 2 stereo channels for the main music and another 2 for the beat that gets added when enemies have spotted you. I edited so that the beat starts playing in the second loop of the music.
I exported the final edits as flac, so this should be the highest possible quality for the games music
Also, I split the music up into sections like Hero Mode, Multiplayer and Salmon Run music, since there is just so much and I wanted to make it easier to browse through. For some music that isnāt named yet I added descriptors in parentheses in the file names like (Bang Bang) for that one Hero Mode track you probably already know which one Iām talking about. These descriptors are not in the original file names in the game data, I made them up so itās easier to remember which of the unnamed tracks is which.
I made up a silly little sport for Splatoon called Fishball (Iām not sorry)
I might just stick with Wasabi being a Baseball player of sorts because Iām not even sure if this sport would work, itās kind of goofy
