There are no rules on when to be productive.
If you cannot function in the morning
You can do your work, homework, chores, etc. at 3am
You can go grocery shopping at 11:29pm on a thursday
You can shower, make your bed, brush your teeth at 3pm
You can write an essay in your bed at 9pm and go to bed at 1am
Don't force yourself to wake up at 5am to be productive and then think the day's ruined when you wake at noon
Doing something in a weird way is still doing something

What should I say to a doctor who recommends weight loss to treat my health condition?
Dr. Jon Robison offers this excellent advice:
If you have a health condition commonly considered to be “weight-related,” (most likely candidates are hypertension, abnormal cholesterol, abnormal blood glucose) and a health professional recommends weight loss as a solution, ask [them] the following questions:
What is the long-term success rate of the approach you are suggesting? What is the likelihood I will regain the weight I lose?
What is likely to happen to my health condition if I lose the weight and then regain it?
Is there any way to treat this condition that does not involve a focus on weight loss? (How would you treat a thin person who had the same condition?)
The answers given by your health professional to these questions should look something like:
The success rate is no better than 5% and it is quite likely that you will gain back all of the weight that you lost and perhaps a bit more.
It is quite possible that your health issues (high blood pressure, diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, etc.) will get worse when you regain the weight.
All of these conditions can be helped through lifestyle changes with little or no weight loss. (A Health-Centered Approach) The best treatment for a fat person for any of these conditions is the same treatment that would be recommended for a thin person…
NOTE: If you don’t get something like these answers, consider seeking help elsewhere.
How does this apply to something like knee or joint problems? I need to get physiotherapy for a knee issue* and a lot of the websites I’ve found recommend weight loss. I have no car and walk up to 10km a day, which is probably how it happened, but I’m worried that the physiotherapist will make this all about my weight.
If you can suggest some useful weight/joint research I can cling to to maintain my focus, that would be great.
(FWIW I think it’s patellofemoral syndrome. I confess I googled my symptoms but it’s a basically a perfect match.)
In my experience, physiotherapists are usually pretty good about NOT recommending weight loss. They want you to become more mobile now, in the body you have, not in six months.
But anyway, weight loss is not an evidence-based treatment for knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Fat people with knee and other joint problems benefit from all the same treatments that thin people benefit from – strength training, stretching, pain medication, and other treatments.
things that made me stop wanting to die that require no effort whatsoever
change the color used to highlight text on your laptop
move the pictures on your wall
stack whatever clutter is in your room into piles even if you don’t have time to clean it all
slightly vary your commute, even just by one street
change where you sit and scroll aimlessly on your phone even if it’s only to the chair in your room instead of your bed
drink water or juice out of a wine glass in the morning because nothing is real
shower with the lights off, without music
buy $3 flowers at trader joe’s—they look bad next to the more expensive ones but they look so good in your room
start typing things you don’t post into your notes. your thoughts can be worth documenting even if you don’t deem them worth sharing
wake up super early just once. you don’t have to make it a habit it’s just extra satisfying to go to bed that night
listen to the entirety of your favorite album from 2015
Almost all of these are about variety. Humans need stimulation! We need enrichment! We literally cannot do the same thing every day!
The other day I was feeling miserable, so I hopped on a bus and rode it all the way back to where I’d started, and my brain, which had finally had some proper stimulation via new environments, was suddenly ready to go again!
This is why taking walks/drives and trying new hobbies are good for you! Don’t turn yourself into a sad zoo animal! You need some pumpkins to roll around in your enclosure!
ITS BACK!!!!!
god i fucking love the quote “dont turn yourself into a sad zoo animal” it has really inspired me!
when lizzo said “self love is survival” and when hannah gadsby said “do you understand what self-deprecation means when it comes from somebody who already exists in the margins? it’s not humility. it’s humiliation” and when mitski said “i used to rebel by destroying myself, but realized that’s awfully convenient to the world. for some of us our best revolt is self preservation”
when audre lorde said “caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare”
when Jenny Slate tweeted, “As the image of myself becomes sharper in my brain&more precious, I feel less afraid that someone else will erase me by denying me love”
one day you will wake up refreshed, drink coffee and be able to read a book the same way you did when you were little. you will have a cat who curls up to sleep on your lap or a playful dog who is happy to see you. you will be the kindest you can be, listening to stories, and checking up on people often. you will make pancakes in the morning and decorate your abode with plants, your old paintings and cozy cushions. you will fill photo albums with blurry photos of your new friends and road trips and summery evenings. you will visit your favorite bakery and library often, and keep in touch with people you love. things won’t be perfect, but you’ll be at peace with yourself and you will be in love with life again.
