one thing abt bear as a character that feels So crucial is the fact that its mentioned early on that his apartment is actually his grandmothers who passed away some unspecified amount of time ago and he’s moved in (notice the furniture and decor not looking like that of a young guy)

he comes home to find his cat (his grandma’s cat??) dead because it got into his grandma’s medication which he still has for some reason, so he cleans up the vomit and the corpse (in a bin bag, not a burial despite supposedly loving that cat SO much), and then….. puts the medicine back in the cabinet???

and then he sobs about this entirely preventable thing that HE could have avoided had he just taken any kind of initiative and yknow, gotten rid of the incredibly dangerous pills for a dead woman being kept in a cabinet that doesnt close properly

because if he Had actually cared about that cat, he wouldn’t have kept that stuff lying around at all, and he wouldn’t have unceremoniously dumped its body in a bin bag outside and then act like a victim when his own actions come to bite him

and That is what his character is about

I like that the wishing willow in Obsession (2026) takes your implications in the wish while also following exactly what you said for others. Bear only said Nikki, he meant his friend Nikki, but he didn't specify and it still chose her. On the other hand, Entity! Nikki can't take care of herself because the phrasing "I want Nikki to love me more than anyone else in the fucking world" also applies to self love. It could've amplified her familial love for Bear or to Bear as a friend, but it didn't because Bear meant romantic love. Entity! Nikki can't be a good friend to Sarah or Ian which is why Sarah assumes they stopped being friends anymore because she can't feel that platonic love or affection anymore. She must've felt sexual attraction and lust towards Ian before since they were sleeping together, and that disappears because the part "more than anyone else" takes away all other forms of love from Nikki because Bear cannot fathom a non romantic love.

on my second viewing of obsession, i had the realization that nikki’s story at the party wasn’t the movie using incest as an easy shorthand for making the audience uncomfortable or creating a general “things are off” vibe but was another way the real nikki was crying out—a metaphor for the fact that nikki, like gretel, is being made to fuck her “little brother” (bear) under duress, at the behest of an external magic (the witch’s spell in her story; obviously, bear’s wish)

After watching Project Hail Mary (amazing movie no notes loved it) I want to read the book so bad but I started LOTR last week and I’m 120 pages in and they still haven’t made it to the prancing pony so it’s gonna take me a MINUTE to finish that blehhhh I’m so impatient

Eva and Grace’s dynamic is so important to me. They’re in love platonically. Like, that’s not a common dynamic. She put the way he likes his coffee into the ship’s computer. He follows her around like a puppy. In the book, she cracks jokes with him and him only. She cares about his opinion. He was the only one she asked about the coma gene, wondering if it was worth it.

He’s her best friend, and she doesn’t even know it. They’re so close, that in the book, people think they’re sleeping together, and poor Grace is so confused because he thought that was his platonic work wife, wdym people think we’re sleeping together, that’s my person that I crack jokes with and then she glares at me because they’re not funny.

She’s softer with him than anybody else and is only ever vulnerable around him. We see in the movie, he’s the only one who ever gets her to smile, and sometimes even laugh, and then she serenades all of them, but mainly him, and he stares at her with those big, shiny eyes so lovingly, and she points at him when she sings, “everything’s gonna be alright”, and then she gives him those eyes, so loving.

And then she’s trying to stop herself from crying when she’s sending him away because, against her will, he’s become her person, and somewhere along the way, she’s become his, and they will have forever ended this relationship on bad terms, and nothing can fix that.

It’s a platonic tragedy. It’s a platonic love story. This is something we don’t get often, or, like, ever, and it’s deep and it’s tragic and it’s sad.

But even after, Eva’s still taking care of him. Packing clothes she knew would bring him comfort. Programming the ship to know how he likes his coffee. And Grace is still watching out for her, speaking to her directly in his video logs, with that same lopsided smile he used to throw her way.

He uses Rocky’s sign for goodbye, and she uses it back, and how did this book and movie give us such a deep platonic friendship because, guys, this NEVER HAPPENS.

I was so scared they were heading for a romance subplot but congrats to Project Hail Mary for going for the far funnier option of 'Trolley Operator' and 'Guy She Is Actively Tying To The Tracks'. What a dynamic. Movie of the year.
