A puff of cigarette smoke square in the face welcomes Mulder as he kneels down to climb through Scully’s basement-level dorm room window. He sputters and coughs as his eyes sting.

“Jesus, Scully! A little warning next time, please.”

Scully looks up at him sheepishly through the window screen and sets her cigarette in an ashtray perched precariously on the windowsill. “Sorry! I didn’t know you were planning on coming over past curfew.” To her credit, she looks adorably guilty, so Mulder lifts the screen and sticks his head in the room to kiss her forehead.

“It’s alright. You sounded upset over the phone earlier so I thought I’d come and see if you were okay.” He leans farther through the window and tumbles onto her bed that’s pushed against the wall, narrowly missing the lit cigarette on the windowsill. Scully picks it up and takes a drag, blowing the smoke carefully out the open window. She sits down next to him and leans against the cinder blocks behind them.

They are left alone, in the dark, in the back of the ambulance, without an EMT, and she wants him to be closer.

She doesn’t know how she knows his hand is waiting for her, but she reaches for it, and sure enough, there it is. They hold hands like so, still feeling as one with nature. Only this time, they have barely escaped from the chambers of a giant mushroom.

the lea michele situation is actually a prime example of why we should be wary of performative activism right now. if you are supporting the cause by protesting, donating, posting your support, etc. that’s great! but this problem goes so much deeper than just police brutality.

every single non-black person who has posted #blacklivesmatter this week needs to take a step back and analyze whether or not their actions (not just their words) have shown that they truly believe that statement. it’s a clear and obvious choice to speak out against the brutal murder of an innocent man. however, if you are not making the obvious choice every day to speak up for us when your friends/relatives make racist jokes, if you are not listening to and respecting the black people you know in real life, if you have not sat down to analyze the ways you actively benefit from this system, if you have not worked to start unlearning the biases you were raised with, or if you thought “black lives matter” was a controversial statement until this week, do not pretend to care just because everyone is talking about it right now.

when these protests are over, there will still be many battles to fight. this is not a game, and this is not something you post about just for likes and clicks. if you are resting easy right now thinking that you’re “one of the good ones” for showing public outrage over a situation that should anger any reasonable person, you need to do more. racism is not something you can pick and choose when to be against. we don’t get to pick and choose when we experience racism. so if you’re going to get involved with this situation right here, right now, then you need to be ready to hold yourself and others accountable for anti-blackness in all other areas of your life.

I keep recommending this documentary only to realize that Netflix has put the whole thing up for free on YouTube.

I highly recommend this documentary, which traces the idea of black people being criminals back to where the idea originated. In case you’re worried it’s leftist propaganda or whatever, there is a mix of liberal and conservative experts who are interviewed for this piece. 

If you believe that you yourself are not racist, that’s awesome. But this documentary explains how racism is still perpetuated in our prisons, in our law-making, and in our rhetoric. Dismantling a system is more effective when you know what you’re fighting, and this is a great resource for people who may not have experienced it firsthand.
