Finished the farseer trilogy! Here are some very self indulgent designs of Fitz and the Fool (ratsy included) ik the fool/fitz designs dont line up with the amber/paragon designs in my liveship traders fanart but oh well. I hope to draw Molly and kettricken some time too 💘

The thing that makes Fitz so… fitz, is that he is GENUINELY convinced that he is straight which is funny bc like 45% of the books is him having homosexual thoughts

robin hobb talking about how the fool was only supposed to show up for one scene, say a single line and disappear, but when she started to write he refused to leave….he wanted to stay…….‘when he suddenly declares, ‘we’re here to save the world, you and i’ i’m going i have no idea what you’re talking about’…….‘he’s one of those characters that has no respect for an outline, no respect for the plot’…….if i think at all about beloved fighting tooth and nail scratching and biting to stay, to stay by fitz, to not be left behind, in and out of the story i break my own heart in a million little pieces. my curiosity has always been greater than my wisdom. but largest of all is my own loneliness………

I finished reading Assassin's Quest the other day and while I've been recovering from that ending, I decided to draw out this little scene that I loved. I feel like I'm going to be drawing a lot more of these two in the future.

guys help I'm writing a straight character and I want to make sure their feelings about their best friend (who is tragically in love with them) read as strictly platonic. So far I've had:

character using possessive language about the friend

describing friend's hands and hair and figure often and in flattering and poetic language

seething with jealousy at the mere suspicion that friend may have even a casual romantic/sexual attachment. to anyone else. ever

overreacting childishly to the friend's confession of love after hearing rumors about their relationship

character stating openly that they want the friend's touch "as [they] want breath itself"

having the character neglect their straight marriage to write bitter, pining letters to their absent friend. they have a whole room dedicated to this btw

making them have a baby together

through ecstatic soul-bonding

give the character a socially taboo kind of magic

their father figure has the same magic but he's closeted and self-loathing about it

he tries to shame and beat it out of our character

every time father figure mentions character's dead father (his former best friend) he says something about their closeness and blushes before changing the subject

the catholic church is still agaisnt divorce, against abortion, against gay rights, still doesn't allow women any power, still silences victims and protects abusers. this is true regardless of how nice and sweet the current figurehead is. i get that the pageantry is very fun, but i could never enjoy it because the sight of a cardinal fills me with anger at all the above 🙏

Whatever you do, don't think about how one of Fitz's major driving forces is bone-deep, constant shame. Don't think about how it permeated every human interaction he's ever had since he was 6. Don't think about how Beloved's unapologetic self assurance, facets and secrets and all, frightened him to irrationality. Don't think about his special introductory message relaying almost nothing of himself but begging you to read his life with mercy. Don't worry about it. Don't let him know you know.
