so… i posted my first fic on ao3. who woulda thought.

and both of the only two fics i have actually posted anywhere are about haikyuu. even though most of my drafts are in stranger things fandom. crazy world we live in, fellas.

saw a post letting people know that your ao3 bookmarks are viewable on your account unless you make them private, which suggests that the median ao3 user does not use ao3 in what i will call 'the optimum fic-finding treadmill' where you find a fic author you like and look through their bookmarks to find more fics that are good and then look through that author's bookmarks for even more good fics. like a conga line of great but extremely specific tastes. or one of those chessboard rice doubling analogies and oh no that is a LOT of ao3 tabs.

it's sad to me that cis people never apply their "loved one with a wanted-pregnancy" script to medical transition. like cis people often indicate they don't know how to react to hearing about medical transition, but a huge portion of that social script is directly applicable.

tell someone "congratulations!" tell them "I'm so happy for you. I know you've been trying for a really long time." ask them "do you need help with anything?" throw them a party with loved ones where you all give them some gifts in acknowledgement of how expensive it is. celebrate how far along they are. take photos with them so they have a record of being loved while their body changes. allow them to voice fears and doubts and anxieties about how it'll go, and reassure them that they'll get through the intense medical procedure coming up & you'll be there for support no matter what. let them tell you about the gross parts and laugh together. really listen to them when they talk about how amazing and profound it is that the human body can do this. share in their excitement for beginning a new stage of their life.

If there are complications, comfort them and help them navigate what's next. If they lose access suddenly due to finances or criminalization, treat it like a miscarriage and hold them while they grieve.

i will say more tho!! most beautiful fandom integration i have seen in a crossover fic in my entire life, beautiful lore, beautiful worldbuilding, amazing character dynamics. and on top of all my favorite mha guys being there, all of my favorite discworld guys are there too?? my literal favorite character of all time (death. obviously) is central to the plot?? midnight is a nanny ogg stan?????? they INTERACT while being in the SAME ROOM TOGETHER?????

i only read terry pratchett when i was younger and my english wasn’t fluent, so all the books were translations. which means i have never seen the og terry pratchett prose in my life. when i tell you the sheer nostalgic recognition of the author’s voice bludgeoned me over the head through all possible language barriers one paragraph in i’m underplaying it. it was quite a bit harder to recognize the discworld characters, because the names were so different, but every time i recognized somebody (which was almost all of them, even if i don’t remember all the lore that well now) the absolute giddy childlike joy i felt was indescribable.

this is so well-written, has such an interesting concept and incredible plot and execution and overall is such an ingenious work i feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t know this fic exist yet or consciously chooses not to read it if they do. you don’t know discworld lore? there are very helpful author’s notes. you don’t know mha lore? there are very helpful author’s notes. the exposition is so good i’m pretty sure somebody who is in neither of these fandoms can enjoy this.

greetings to you all, my fellow residents of heated rivalry fandom. i’ve noticed that people have been interacting… quite a bit with my hr posts, and so i come to you all with a proposal.

as a person who is pretty much exclusively in non-russian fandoms, writing fics in a foreign language in my notes and extremely out of context on a bunch of things canon perceived as clear and obvious, i very often found myself wishing i could just… ask a native. to give me insider info, to look over my characterization, to check phrases i wrote in the character’s native language (if i was ballsy enough to do it) for accuracy and authenticity. i never could find anybody out in the open and didn’t have the guts to go looking deeper, so i either winged it and then ate myself alive with anxiety or just gave up.

so! i am offering myself up as a russian person for you to ask anything you might be curious about. nicknames, swear words, translation, just general insight or personal experience. if you’re writing a fic or just throwing around headcanons, i will be happy to answer your questions.

no, i mean. i understand what it means. in context, these are pretty hard to fuck up. i just don’t understand WHY it is expressed this way and not like deceptively easy = something hard that seems easy. because if it’s deceptively hard = something hard that seems easy, you’re not really expressing what the deception itself IS, you’re not describing what it appears like, you’re just saying “this thing is *insert adjective* even though it does not seem that way”. which just loses a lot in way of description considering in most cases i’ve seen this phrase, it is very contextually clear what is the true and not deceptive quality of the thing.

but i guess the great thing about languages is that most of the time the answer to why is “well, people’ve been saying it like that for very long” so there wouldn’t be a clear answer.

i’m also somehow only now realizing that the reason this bugs me so much is because in my language, the equivalent of this phrase is exactly the opposite to the way people say it in english.

i guess that’s just something i’ll have to live with.

it’s always so hilarious to see what monolingual speakers think would be confusing or even incomprehensible to foreigners in their native language. no buddy, your puns are not too convoluted for me to understand and i started learning phrasal verbs in fifth grade.

now, can a native anglophone please explain to me why the FUCK you people say “deceptively strong” or “deceptively hard” instead of “deceptively weak/easy”. the deception is that it’s the OPPOSITE of what it appears like. the deception is that it looks easy when it’s actually hard, seems weak when it’s actually strong. IT DOESN’T MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE.

or maybe i just exclusively saw this expression used by people who got it wrong? please tell me this isn’t the actual norm.
